Between morning art classes for the little ones, pottery painting birthday parties and after school ceramics classes, doodlebug has become an important part of the fabric of the San Anselmo community over the past 15 years. The store and studio on San Anselmo Avenue was founded in 2001 by the beloved Marnie Delaney with the intention of providing a place for children to explore and build their creative abilities and confidence. Soon after opening, Marnie and doodlebug were recognized with awards for the “best party venue” and “best place to inspire your child” in the local press. The San Anselmo Recreation Department began offering after school classes in partnership with doodlebug in 2014, and the partnership began to flourish with great success.. In late 2015, Marnie and doodlebug made the difficult decision to close the store front on the Avenue. We are beyond excited to announce that the San Anselmo Recreation Department and the doodlebug studio have joined together to reopen the studio at the Isabel Cook Community Center! The studio will continue to offer its popular classes, camps and birthday parties and will have space to grow and enhance the opportunities for art exploration in the Ross Valley. Look for our summer camp listings in this guide! Welcome to Marnie and doodlebug! “I truly believe that we need some big creative ideas to combat the craziness in the world. I also believe that many of our kids are ready to be the creative thinkers who will produce these ideas. I encourage you to play in the grass, find shapes in the clouds, and try to count the colors in the leaves. I’d also encourage everyone to do what they love and to encourage your children to go on adventures every day – even if it’s only in their imaginations.” –Marnie Delaney Register Online at www.sananselmorecreation.org 1 tumbling & Gymnastics 8–week session NO CLASS THE WEEK OF July 4th – July 9th All classes are held in the Gymnastics Center at the Isabel Cook Community Center. Have a blast this summer creating Art with a fun and familiar team of credentialed art teachers. Ross Valley Art teachers Jasmine Gavam (Brookside), Nicole Diosdado (Manor/HV), and Emma Beauchamp (White Hill) will teach a one–week art camp that utilizes the beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces on the fabulous White Hill campus. Art activities will include painting & drawing, printmaking, fiber arts, mixed–media, and sculpting in clay. Outdoor activities and play will be part of each day. Kids will have a wonderful Art experience and will be grouped by grade/age in small classes. Students should bring their own snacks and lunch. They should also wear clothing they don’t mind getting grubby while doing artwork. In addition to the camp enrollment fee, please budget for a $30 Art Camp materials fee (which will be paid to the art teachers on the first day of camp) for the purchase of clay, ceramic glaze, paint, and other supplies. Don’t wait! This camp sold out last year and space is limited. Get ready to sing, dance and play the day away! Ross Valley Music Camp returns this summer with renowned local music educators Pete Santucci and Erika Meeker. Students will play and examine many types of instruments to discover how their construction helps to create musical sounds. Then they will build instruments of their own to play music we create together. (Start saving those buckets, jugs, bottles, boxes and rubber bands!) The class will develop cooperative skills as we use melody, harmony, and rhythm to create music using our own instruments, our bodies, and voices, as well as a variety of professionally built xylophones, African drums and other world percussion. We will be inspired to move and dance as we interpret many different styles of music, as well as the music we create for each other. Students should bring their own snacks, lunch, water bottle, and wear clothing appropriate for movement, dance, and creative play. It’s the most exciting shop to hit San Anselmo Avenue in recent memory. Our dynamic Friends of the San Anselmo Public Library group have opened a used book store at 411 San Anselmo Ave (home to the old Riccardo’s restaurant). They stock over 1,000 books, DVDs, and CD audio books in a wide variety of genres: Fiction, cookbooks, art books, best sellers and many more. They have hardbound books and paperbacks, which are perfect for summer traveling. There is also a wonderful Children’s section with both picture books and chapter books and a Teen section as well. The inventory is constantly changing so you’ll find new books every time you visit! All proceeds come right back to support the Library. Visit Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The store is run by volunteers and the books are all donated from people like you. The Friends need volunteers to run the bookstore, to sort donations and to help with the Amazon sales. This summer, the San Anselmo Public Library will host an array of high-quality, free activities for children, teens, and adults to encourage and support a love of reading. Kids of all ages, whether they are reading independently or listening to stories read aloud, can sign up for the Summer Reading Program and win prizes for reaching their reading goals. There’s also a serious side to summer reading-- research has shown that reading over the summer prevents summer reading loss. Summer Reading Program registration begins June 13 and continues through August 22. Just who are the Friends, you may be asking? They are a dedicated group of women and men who organized back in the 1970s to provide additional financial support for the Library. When you become a Friend of the Library you support monthly art lectures, youth book clubs, Tunstead Live, Saturday lectures, and Summer reading programs. There is so much happening at your Library and we want you to know about it. We offer so many programs that it would be nearly impossible to attend them all or to list them here, but we want to keep you informed with all the latest news. Traditional forms of communication are still important to us—we send press releases, post flyers around town, update the lawn sign on the corner of San Anselmo Avenue and Tunstead, and offer printed calendars and other information in the Library. But, if you prefer to get your information online, we’re there too. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest and we encourage you to subscribe to the Town’s Library calendar to receive automatic emails or texts alerting you to our programs. If you do any of these things, you will find out about events and interesting information about literary awards, Library humor, photos of displays and programs, and more! Refuse and Recycling News Dog Waste Free On-Call Cleanups – Marin Sanitary provides two on-call pickups during each calendar year for residential customers at no additional charge. The program guidelines for the on-call service are below. Maximum Amounts for collection: • Two (2) cubic yards of solid waste (the equivalent of fourteen 32-gallon bags); or • 1 cubic yard of solid waste (the equivalent of seven 32-gallon bags) and one bulky item. Bulky items are items too large to be placed in a cart, such as household appliances, furniture, carpets, mattresses and similar large items that require special handling due to their size. Collection Guidelines: • No single item weighing over sixty (60) pounds or that cannot be collected safely by one person shall be accepted. • Items that are heavier than sixty (60) pounds and/or require more than one person to lift may be collected for an additional fee. Call Marin Sanitary at 456-2601 for more information or to schedule a pickup. Intensive Recycling Program The Town, in cooperation with Marin Sanitary Service (MSS), has an Intensive Recycling Program that permits refuse pickup every other week. This program is intended to acknowledge and reward intensive recycling efforts. Intensive recyclers limit their garbage to one 20 gallon can every two weeks. To qualify for the Intensive Recycling Program, customers are asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the disposal of recyclable materials. The questionnaire includes questions about how applicants dispose of various items, such as packing peanuts, plastic jugs, light bulbs, concrete, plastic flower pots, and aerosol cans. In addition, applicants are asked how they would reach the goal of 20 gallons of nonrecyclables every two weeks. For more information on the program, or to receive an application, please call Carla Kacmar at (415) 258-4660. Garbage Collection Days With the advent of numerous carts designed for collection of green waste, recycling materials and garbage, taking out the trash on trash day is a bigger job than it once was. A problem has surfaced in conjunction with the increased number of carts at each residence and business. Town Staff has received several complaints about carts that are left out on the curb or in the street all week long, rather than being brought in after pickup. The San Anselmo Municipal Code, Title 5, Chapter 3, Section 3.03, says in part “No can or receptacle for receiving garbage 30 Summer is almost here! We’d like to remind dog owners about a San Anselmo ordinance about dogs. Persons walking dogs in San Anselmo are required to clean up after their pets. This means that if your dog defecates on any public property, or private property that isn’t yours, you are responsible to dispose of it in a sanitary manner. A number of residents have commented on the fact that some dog owners leave used waste bags just sitting on the sidewalk. Others note that bags are deposited in individual residents’ private cans, leaving a smelly mess. When walking your dog, please carry along a plastic bag for cleanup, and dispose of the bag in a public trash can or when you get home. Bicycles on Sidewalks Riding bicycles on sidewalks can be dangerous for pedestrians. In our highly trafficked area, occasionally bicyclists, particularly children, need to use sidewalks to safely get to a particular destination. Parents of cyclists, please remind children that if they must ride on the sidewalk, to please take particular care to avoid pedestrians and ride slowly. And, adults, if you’re riding on a sidewalk, please slow down and be considerate of pedestrians. Emergency Vehicles When an emergency vehicle is behind you and has their emergency lights activated, California Vehicle Code section 21806(A) (1) mandates that all vehicles must move to the right side of the road. Failure to do so is an infraction, and contributes to delays in emergency response times. Emergency personnel are trained to respond quickly and safely using the vehicle’s emergency warning lights and siren, but they need your help. Help emergency vehicles get there faster by pulling over to the right and bringing your vehicle to a complete stop. If they are stopped on the side of the road, move over (or slow down if you can’t move over) and help make their job safer. The California Vehicle Code states the following: CVC 21806. Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle which is sounding a siren and which has at least one lighted lamp exhibiting red light that is visible, under normal atmospheric conditions, from a distance of 1,000 feet to the front of the vehicle, the surrounding traffic shall, except as otherwise directed by a traffic officer, do the following: (a) (1) Except as required under paragraph (2), the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the rightof-way and shall immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the highway, clear of any intersection, and thereupon shall stop and remain stopped until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our community safe! San Anselmo Recreation Department: p.415.258.4640 • f.415.455.8229 Town News Vehicle Break-ins Due to the proliferation of electronic devices such as GPS units, iPods, laptop computers and smart phones, vehicle burglaries and thefts from vehicles are on the rise nationally. These crimes are becoming more common because people make it far too easy and tempting for a thief to gain access to their vehicles by leaving valuables in plain view. Thieves can quickly enter vehicles, often sight unseen. Some common methods of entry into a vehicle are: • Smashing out a window commonly known as “SMASH AND GRAB” • Using a tool to open a door or unlock the door through an open window • No force necessary, door(s) unlocked • Make sure your vehicle’s windows are rolled up and the doors locked before leaving your vehicle • Don’t trust your vehicle remote to lock your doors - DOUBLE CHECK! • Don›t park where others cannot see your vehicle, such as behind buildings, shrubbery, landscaping berms, or larger vehicle/trucks Sidewalk Clearance It is important that property owners keep adjacent sidewalk and roadway areas clear to ensure adequate clearance for pedestrian and vehicle passage. The following guidelines may help identify areas that need attention: • Flowers, shrubs and other growth (excepting trees) in the parkway area (between the curb and sidewalk) should not exceed 18” in height. • Tree branches over the sidewalk should clear the full width of the sidewalk at a height of 7 feet. • Tree branches over the roadway must clear the roadway at a height of 15 feet. However, most thefts from motor vehicles are preventable. There are just a few things you can to do to prevent them. • Close your windows and lock your doors • Flowers, shrubs, hedges and other growth that abuts a sidewalk and/or roadway must be cut back to the edge of the sidewalk and the edge of the curb. • Remove all valuables or place them in your trunk • Remove “pull-out” style or removable car stereo face plates • Do not leave keys in vehicle Performing the above gardening duties will ensure that our sidewalks and roads are property cleared for safe pedestrian and vehicle access. • Do not leave a car running • If possible, move mounting hardware out of sight.
