CLIMBING FIXED LADDERS ON TANKS

fall arrest equipment and
perform inspection to
equipment prior to use.
2. Worker to dress
according to ambient
conditions.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT:
Safety Glasses with side shields, hard hat, steel toe boots, FR Clothing, full body harness (CSA
Approved) with D ring front and back, bypass lanyard, Gloves Personal Gas Monitor, appropriate
clothing (warm), trained worker in fall arrest equipment and inspection of the fall arrest equipment.
SAFETY NOTE:
If tank ladder is equipped with cage from 10ft mark up to top of tank — fall assist equipment is not
required.
PROCEDURE:
1. Permit may be required if contract services are performing job task.
2. Don safety equipment.
3. Fasten 2 lanyards (or bypass lanyard) to the ring at the back of the full body harness.

4. Standing at the base of the ladder, reach up and fasten one lanyard to a rung.
5. Climb up 2 or 3 rungs carrying nothing in your hands, except the remaining lanyard. Reach up and
fasten one lanyard and then disconnect the 1st Ianyard.
6. Repeat until you reach the top. Always have at least one lanyard connected to maintain 3 point
contact.
7. Repeat in reverse order to return to the ground.
