Integration of environmental aspects and modern technology (GIS and RS) and pedagogic

(eLearning) in Egyptian higher education with special focus on planning

Objective

The project aims to introduce the eLearnning model as a means of education in Egypt in the field of planning and the environment, particularly using GIS and remote sensing as tools. It is intended to produce a new generation of Egyptian planners and engineers with a modern and multidisciplinary outlook, well prepared to meet the country's progress towards socio-economic and environmental integrated development. The following sub-objectives will lead to the achievement of the overall aim: - Introduce eLearning model as a means of education in Egypt, particularly for professionals and for people in remote areas. Provide a base for an eLearning/on campus post-graduate scientific degree in GIS. Evaluate and improve the eLearning model in a new environment such the one of Egypt.

- Develop courses that integrate environmental aspects in physical planning process using new technology (Geographical Information systems and Remote Sensing) as suitable tools to address the needs of the current development trends Egypt. - Develop appropriate course curriculum for courses that may be given in both European and MEDA partner countries - Improve accessibility and improve dissemination of course contents. By translating the part of the courses to Arabic language and with the use of e-Learning models, the project aims at an increased dissemination to students that are less acquainted with english language, which is often the case for students already professionally active.

- Improve interaction between academic staff, practitioners and decision makers. By bringing together academic staff from Banha and Alexandria Universities and practitioners from GOPP; the courses will include concrete planning and environmental issues in theories and practices from the local and regional perspectives and also enhance the link between academic staff and decision makers in Egypt.

Title New Vision of Engineering Economy Teaching

Objective

The pilot project aims at participation of Egyptian staff with EU-staff in training post/under graduate Engineering Economy Educational Material (EEEM) and the development of a prototype

EEEM that will include the usage of most recent teaching facilities in addition to a wide spectrum of model applications. The consortium members (Naples Federico II-Italy, FECU-Egypt,

University of York-UK, and TEI of Piraeus-Greece) will modernize the teaching of EE by adding the most suitable teaching facilities and multimedia currently in use, all over the world. These facilities include the preparation of courses texts, tutorials, projects, lab works, and Internet website. The effectiveness of the new teaching techniques will be measured by a designed evaluation system.

The developed EEEM will be mainly used at FECU which is the most prestigious public institution for engineering education in Egypt. Other Egyptian Universities may benefit from the hosting of the developed EEEM on the Internet. This proposal is consistent with the specific goals of HEEP-Egypt which aims at supporting improvements in the quality, relevance, and efficiency of higher education at Egyptian Public Universities and Higher Education Institutions.

Title Virtual Learning Environment for Medical Education

Objective

By March 2006:

1. Pilot study of a market leading VLE will allow tutors and faculty curriculum managers to gain invaluable experience in the application of sound pedagogic principles to deliver online learning resources and study guides to the students.

2. Tutors and faculty members will gain experience in the use of the VLE to administer effective communication with the students.

3. Thirty students from the Cairo University, Faculty of Medicine will be able to utilise the VLE, as a pilot course, in self-guided learning and self assessment.

Title European and Mediterranean Certified Maritime Training Centre

Objective

The project is focused on the creation of a European and Mediterranean Maritime Training Centre at AASTMT, which is dedicated to training and consultation in the field of maritime activities for the promotion of Universities, industry and society partnerships. This realization will be oriented on educational and professional training, whether in AASTMT, the High Educational Authorities and some port authorities, maritime association and industry. The Centre will be set to train future managers, especially in the intermodal and maritime activities, such as port management, shipping activities, logistic transport services. These courses are conceived to train the people who will work in the port authorities and the public and private institutions. The AASTMT will get a clearance of operational maritime activities, which will provide the students with a genuine professional improvement and will thus bring them to cope with the management of complexes maritime problems, by a complete and extended offering of training.
