Ask anybody who understands the value of hard work. If you want your work to be as productive as it can be, you need the right tools. At Elanco, we couldn’t agree more. Elanco’s portfolio of dairy products contains tools that have all demonstrated years of proven effectiveness on dairies of all sizes. The following pages contain a brief overview of these efficient tools for dairy producers. ELANCO TOOLS FOR DAIRY PRODUCERS Let’s work together. You supply the dairy. We’ll bring the tools. Elanco Rumensin ® (monensin USP) Rumensin improves milk production efficiency* by delivering more energy per pound of feed. Rumensin is the only FDA-approved feed ingredient for lactating and dry cows that increases milk-production efficiency* by economically delivering more milk per pound of feed. 1 How does it work? Rumensin enables cows to get more energy from every pound of feed they consume based on mode of action. Adding Rumensin to rations for dairy cows helps producers get more milk per pound of feed. This milk production efficiency* can result in profitability from an average of at least a 5:1 economic return. 2 In addition to its productivity potential, Rumensin brings another benefit advantage to dairy producers. In dairy calves and heifers, Rumensin prevents and controls coccidiosis to reduce the challenge of this disease. For heifers this leads to an increased rate of weight gain. *Production of solids-corrected milk per unit of feed intake Dose recommendations for dairy cows Total mixed rations (complete feed): Feed continuously to dry and lactating dairy cows a total mixed ration (complete feed) containing 11 to 22 g/ton monensin on a 100% dry matter basis. Component feeding systems (including topdress): Feed continuously to dry and lactating dairy cows a Type C medicated feed containing 11 to 400 g/ton monensin. The Type C medicated feed must be fed in a minimum of 1 pound of feed per cow per day to provide 185 to 660 mg/hd/day monensin to lactating cows or 115 to 410 mg/hd/day monensin to dry cows. This provides cows with similar amounts of Rumensin they would receive by consuming total mixed ratiins contairing 11 to 22 g/ton Rumensin on a 100% dry matter basis. Dose recommendation for calves Approved range for coccidiosis prevention and control in calves: 0.14 – 1.0 mg monensin/lb of body weight Dose recommendation for heifers Approved range for coccidiosis prevention and control in heifers: 0.14 – 0.42 mg monensin/lb of body weight Approved range for increased rate of weight gain: Feed at a rate of not less than 50 nor more than 200 mg per head per day in not less than 1 pound of Type C medicated feed. Elanco Posilac ® (sometribove zinc suspension) Posilac helps dairymen become a bit more productive by helping cows produce an additional 10 pounds of milk per day.3 Posilac helps increase productivity by allowing cows to produce an additional 10 pounds of milk per day. Even though herd level production will continue to fluctuate, the 10 pound response Posilac provides remains consistent.3 Posilac helps lower a herd’s average cost of production by spreading fixed costs over more milk. A typical herd would lower their cost of production by $0.50-$1.50/cwt.4 Posilac is desigend to work with the cow’s body and has the same mode of action as the bST she naturally produces. Supplementation begins between 57 and 70 days in milk; after the cow’s natural bST production has peaked. The safety of Posilac has been extensively studied, in fact Posilac is the most researched animal health product ever to be approved by the FDA. 5 No differences in milk have been discovered and no test exists that can identify different management practices in milk production. 5 The benefits of Posilac extend beyond the dairy. The global need for dairy increases every year, and Posilac helps dairymen provide much needed nutrition to a growing world population while using fewer natural resources per gallon of milk.6 Elanco Keto-Test ® How common is subclinical ketosis? The overall prevalence of SCK is estimated to be around 15 percent.7 Keto-Test couldn’t be easier to use. A simple milk strip changes color to indicate the level of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in milk and the presence of subclinical ketosis (SCK), often long before any other clinical symptoms of the disease can be observed. Transition cows are at highest risk for ketosis in the first two or three weeks postpartum, when they are in early lactation and negative energy balance. By routinely testing cows in this primary risk period for SCK, early detection can be initiated to prevent the subclinical condition from becoming a clinical disease. In several studies comparing Keto-Test to serum BHBA levels, Keto-Test results were found to be very competitive.8,9,10 While a blood serum test has the highest sensitivity for ketosis diagnosis, Keto-Test is a convenient, low-cost monitoring tool that can aid the herd’s nutritionist and veterinarian in evaluating the dairy’s transition cow program. Elanco Micotil ® (tilmicosin injection) Losses associated with BRD include treatment costs, reduced growth rates, delay in age at first calving, increased risk of culling, and calf mortality.11 Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a threat at any time, but especially when calves are first grouped or in other similarly stressful times. Micotil is a proven, fast-acting,* and long-lasting BRD treatment that offers a flexible, cost-effective dose range for both metaphylaxis (treatment of group of animals at high risk of devloping BRD) and individual pull-andtreat therapy. Micotil is approved for the treatment of BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni and for the control of BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica. Important Safety Information See label for complete use information, including boxed human warnings and non-target species safety information. Micotil is to be used by, or on the order of, a licensed veterinarian. For cattle or sheep, inject subcutaneously. Intravenous use in cattle or sheep will be fatal. Do not use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older. Use in lactating dairy cattle or sheep may cause milk residues. The following adverse reactions have been reported: in cattle: injection site swelling and inflammation, lameness, collapse, anaphylaxis/anaphylactoid reactions, decreased food and water consumption, and death; in sheep: dyspnea and death. Always use proper drug handling procedures to avoid accidental self-injection. Do not use in automatically powered syringes. Consult your veterinarian on the safe handling and use of all injectable products prior to administration. Micotil has a pre-slaughter withdrawal time of 42 days. *Time for Micotil to reach the lungs, clinical relevance not demonstrated. Micotil label will be glued here during production Elanco Parasiticides For proactive pest management, Elanco provides a premise product with sustainable efficacy and excellent pest control. Dairy pests don’t stand a chance. Elector® PSP This is a special formulation for pests that might be resistant to organophosphates and pyrethroids. It is used to control populations of houseflies, stable flies, and darkling beetles, providing pest control weeks after application.12 Its excellent safety characteristics mean it can be used in the presence of dairy animals. Elanco Vaccines Elanco now brings you a comprehensive line of dairy vaccine health management solutions for your operation.
