3. Product Description
BASIC USE
INFINISEALª DB Sealer for DRY-BLOCKª Block
and Mortar admixture applications is a unique,
water repellent sealer, specially formulated to
provide maximum water repellency when
post-applied to integrally treated DRY-BLOCK
concrete masonry structures.
INFINISEAL DB is recommended for use on
structures constructed with DRY-BLOCK
Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) and DRY-BLOCK
mortar. This clear, water repellent sealer should
be used for maximum protection against
water intrusion. The use of INFlNISEAL DB Sealer
helps minimize the risk of efflorescence. By further reducing the water in the wall system,
there is less likelihood of soluble salts in the mortar or CMU being dissolved and brought to the
surface as efflorescence. Reducing moisture
penetration also lessens the likelihood of mold
and mildew in or on the wall.
ADVANTAGES
Features and advantages of INFINISEAL DB
Sealer include:
• Seals the exterior wall from water intrusion
and attack from waterborne contaminants
• Provides maximum water repellency through
a unique DRY-BLOCK System approach
• Maintains the structure’s “breathability”
• Minimizes efflorescence
• Minimizes surface staining and attack from airborne contaminants, including acid rain
• Minimizes the occurrence of mold, mildew
and algae
• Easy to apply, ready to use, water based liquid for jobsite use
• Suited for both new and existing DRY-BLOCK
construction
• Leaves the appearance of treated surface
unaltered
• Easy cleanup with soapy water
COMPOSITION & MATERIALS
Ready to use, INFINISEAL DB Sealer is a proprietary water based blend of silanes and siloxanes and is volatile organic compound (VOC)
compliant. It is a clear, penetrating sealer
designed to provide enhanced long-term
water repellency protection to new and existing DRY-BLOCK structures. Tests demonstrate
that a total DRY-BLOCK System approach provides unsurpassed water repellency.
The DRY-BLOCK System consists of 3 separate products:
• DRY-BLOCK Block Admixture, a liquid polymeric admixture, is mixed into the concrete
during manufacture of the CMU
• DRY-BLOCK Mortar Admixture is added to
the mortar mix
• INFINISEAL DB Sealer is then either sprayed,
rolled or brush applied to the outside surface of the walls, further enhancing the
water repellency of the overall system

5. Installation
PREPARATORY WORK
Handle and store product according to Grace
recommendations. A 5' × 5' (1.5 × 1.5 m) section
of CMU wall surface should be tested with
INFINISEAL DB Sealer before general application
to ensure proper sealer coverage rate, desired
water repellency properties and desired surface appearance after sealer is fully dried.
Surface Preparation
The surface to be treated must be clean and
dry, free of chemical cleaners, efflorescence,
dirt, oils, mortar smears and other surface
contaminants. Any loose, cracked or disintegrated mortar must be re-pointed at least 7
days prior to the application of INFINISEAL DB
Sealer. Joint sealant and caulking work should
be completed at least 6 hours or longer
(depending on surface cure timing) prior to
application of INFINISEAL DB Sealer.
Surrounding Area
Proper precautions are necessary to protect all
areas surrounding the CMU wall surface such
as masking windows and metals, as well as
covering plants, grass and any other non-CMU
wall objects. Safety precautions also should be
taken to keep pedestrians away from the work
area. Avoid overspray, wind drift and improper
application procedures. Cover all surrounding
areas with polyethylene sheet or other suitable
drop cloth material before sealer application.
Weather conditions should be as follows:
Wall surface, air and sealer temperatures
should be 40 - 100 degrees F (4 - 38 degrees C)
during application. Conditions should be clear
of any precipitation immediately before,
during and for at least 12 hours after sealer
application.
METHODS
INFINISEAL DB Sealer is ready to use from the
container, but should be stirred thoroughly prior
to use using a mixing stick, taking care not to
incorporate air into the sealer. Do not power
mix. Do not dilute with water or any solvent.
Apply by either spray, brush or roller method.
Follow all recommended procedures as defined
in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
For spray application, use low pressure airless
spray equipment with a fan tip 0.025" - 0.035"
(0.64 - 0.89 mm). Using a 3' - 4' (0.9 - 1.2 m) swath,
apply at the lowest pressure setting that will
allow continuous spray without surge. Apply
from the bottom of the CMU wall working
toward the top. Avoid spray atomization.
Apply enough material to saturate the wall surface allowing a sealer wet rundown to a maximum of 6" (152 mm).
Some very porous or lightweight CMU walls
may require a second coat to ensure proper
surface saturation, coverage and product
performance. If a second coat is required,
apply the second coat of INFINISEAL DB Sealer
wet-on-wet at twice the coverage rate as
the initial coat within an hour of the first spray
application.
For brush or roller application, use either
nylon or other synthetic brushes or rollers that
are resistant to alkalinity. When brushing or
rolling INFINISEAL DB Sealer, make sure the
treated area is thoroughly saturated and
avoid excessive overlapping.
If the whole wall section cannot be completed in one day, try to end at natural
breaks (corners, roof scuppers, etc.) as one
would do with any other coating or painting
operation.
Drying & Curing Time
INFINISEAL DB Sealer will surface dry in 1 - 3
hours, or longer, depending on air and surface temperatures and humidity. However,
full sealer cure can take up to 28 days and
water repellency properties should be visible
within 3 - 7 days following application.
Post-Application Cleaning
Clean all spray equipment, brushes and rollers
with hot, soapy water. Clean all windows or
surrounding accidental overspray areas the
same day of application by removing all surface residue with warm soapy water.
Coverage Rates
The coverage rate of INFINISEAL DB Sealer will
depend on the porosity of the substrate.
Typical sealer coverage rates will range
from approximately 50 - 150 ft2/gal (1.2 - 3.7
m2/L). More porous surfaces such as lightweight, fluted or split faced CMUs will require
more sealer for a given area than denser
CMU surfaces. Complete installation recommendations are available from the
manufacturer.
PRECAUTIONS
Do not allow INFINISEAL DB Sealer to freeze.
Always store above 40 degrees F (4 degrees C)
and below 100 degrees F (38 degrees C).
Since INFINISEAL DB Sealer provides a water
repellent surface, adhesion of water based
paint and sealants to treated surfaces can be
affected. Always test paints or other coatings
to ensure desired adhesion properties before
applying over a CMU surface treated with
INFINISEAL DB Sealer. Follow all precautions outlined in the MSDS for INFINISEAL DB Sealer.
