BASILICA CISTERN (Turkish: Yerebatan Sarayı - "Sunken
Palace", or Yerebatan Sarnıcı - "Sunken Cistern"): The largest
and most magnificent covered cistern in the city is entered
through a small building to the west of the Hagia Sophia. The
ceiling of this forest of columns is made of brick and is crossvaulted. The name of the cistern comes from a basilica that was
once located nearby.
It was built during the reign of Justinian I (527-565) to supply
water to the palaces in the vicinity. Its 336 columns are
arranged in 12 rows of 28 each. The cistern measures 140 by 70
meters. The columns are topped with capitals, some of them
plain, but most in Corinthian style. The water level in the cistern
changed from season to season. The water was distributed
through the pipes at different levels in the eastern wall.
The ground was cleared during the major restoration in 1987, and when over one meter of mud was removed,
the original brick pavement and two marble Medusa heads at the base of two of the columns were revealed.
The walkway that was constructed at that time enables visitors to walk around the cistern.
VISITING HOURS: 09.00 – 19.00 during summer season (till 30 September 2013)
Admission: 10 TL
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultan Ahmet Camii) is
a historic mosque in Istanbul. The mosque is popularly known
as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its
interior. It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of
Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains a tomb of the founder, a madrasah
and a hospice. While still used as a mosque, the Sultan Ahmed
Mosque has also become a popular tourist attraction.
Website: http://english.istanbul.gov.tr/Default.aspx?pid=308
Mosques are closed to tourists only during prayer times.
The HIPPODROME OF CONSTANTINOPLE (Turkish:
Sultanahmet Meydanı, At Meydan) was a circus that was the
sporting and social centre of Constantinople, capital of the
Byzantine Empire. Today it is a square named Sultanahmet
Meydanı (Sultan Ahmet Square) in the Turkish city of
Istanbul, with a few fragments of the original structure
surviving. It’s also called Atmeydanı (Horse Square) in Turkish.
The GRAND BAZAAR (Turkish: Kapalıçarşı, meaning "Covered
Bazaar"; also: Turkish: Büyük Çarşı, meaning "Grand Bazaar") in
Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the
world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops which
attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. Construction
between 1455-1730.
The NEW MOSQUE or Mosque of the Valide Sultan (Turkish:
'Yeni Cami, Yeni Valide Camii') is an Ottoman imperial mosque
located in the Eminönü district of Istanbul. The construction of
the mosque first began in 1597. It was ordered by Safiye
Sultan, who was the wife of Sultan Murad III.

The SPICE BAZAAR, (Turkish: 'Mısır Çarşısı', or Egyptian Bazaar) is one of the largest bazaars in the city. It is
the second largest covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. There are several documents suggesting
the name of the bazaar was first "New Bazaar". The building was endowed to the foundation of the New
Mosque, and got its name "Egyptian Bazaar" because it was built with the revenues from Egypt. The word
6
WASET 2014: World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology, February 17-18, 2014 Istanbul, Turkey
“mısır” has a double meaning in Turkish: "Egypt" and "maize". This is why sometimes the name is wrongly
translated as "Corn Bazaar". Completed: 1660.
The GALATA TOWER (Galata Kulesi in Turkish) — called
Christea Turris (the Tower of Christ in Latin) by the Genoese —
is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of
Istanbul. It offers a panoramic vista of Old Istanbul. Completed:
1348, Admission: 13 TL, Located between Karaköy/Galata and
the lower end of Istiklal Street. (how to go:
http://www.myistanbulguide.com/general/the-galata-tower/)
According to the Seyahatname of Ottoman historian and
traveller Evliya Çelebi, in circa 1630-1632, Hezarfen Ahmet
Çelebi flew as an early intercontinental aviator using artificial
wings for gliding from this tower over the Bosphorus to the
slopes of Üsküdar on the Anatolian side, nearly six kilometres
away. Evliyâ Çelebi also tells of Hezarfen's brother, Lagari Hasan
Çelebi, performing the first flight with a rocket in a conical cage
filled with gunpowder in 1633.
İSTIKLAL AVENUE or Istiklal Street (Turkish: İstiklâl CaddesiIndependence Avenue) is one of the most famous avenues in
Istanbul, Turkey, visited by nearly 3 million people in a single
day over the course of weekends. Located in the historic
Beyoğlu (Pera) district, it is an elegant pedestrian street, 1.4
kilometers long, which houses exquisite boutiques, music stores,
bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theatres, libraries, cafés,
pubs, night clubs with live music, historical patisseries,
chocolateries and restaurants.
The cosmopolitan avenue is surrounded by an array of historical
and politically significant buildings, such as the Çiçek Pasajı
(Flower Passage) where small, intimate restaurants and taverns
are found; Balık Pazarı (The Fish Market); the Ağa Camii
Mosque; the Roman Catholic churches of Santa Maria Draperis
and S. Antonio di Padova; the Greek Orthodox Haghia Triada; the Armenian Üç Horan (among many other
churches); several synagogues; mosques; academic institutions established by various European nations such
as Austria, France, Germany and Italy in the 19th century; and consulates (former embassies before 1923) of
several nations including France, Greece, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
İstiklal Avenue is also a popular venue for all sorts of protests, marches, parades and gatherings in the city.
ORTAKÖY is a neighbourhood within the BEŞIKTAŞ district of
Istanbul, located in the middle of the European bank of the
BOSPHORUS. Ortaköy is a popular spot for locals and tourists
alike, with its art galleries, night clubs, cafés, bars, and
restaurants.
The Neo-Baroque style ORTAKÖY MOSQUE is a beautifully
ornate structure, right on the jetty of Ortaköy, bordering the
waters of the Bosphorus, and thus highly visible from the
passing boats.
The BOSPHORUS BRIDGE completed in 1973 also called the
First Bosphorus Bridge (Turkish: Boğaziçi Köprüsü or 1. Boğaziçi
Köprüsü) is one of two suspension bridges spanning the
Bosphorus strait (Turkish: Boğaziçi) in Istanbul, thus connecting
Europe and Asia (the other one is the Fatih Sultan Mehmet
Bridge completed in 1988, which is called the Second Bosphorus Bridge.) The bridge is located between Ortaköy
(on the European side) and Beylerbeyi (on the Asian side).
