This is similarly the technology of the future in the industrial area of applications. The Pentium M’s completely novel form of micro architecture provides roughly double the computing power compared with a Pentium IV at the same clock frequency. Simultaneously, the energy consumption – which influences the internal temperature – is only a fraction of that associated with traditional processor types. This greatly simplifies the requirements placed on cooling systems in industrial PC systems, and some CPU variants no longer require any form of ventilation fan. The use of Intel® Core™ Duo processors makes possible a technological breakthrough, offering yet more performance. At the same time, the integration of control systems, motion control and operation on a single PC produces high-performance standard architectures in the automation area. Microsoft® Windows® Embedded operating systems Windows® XP Embedded Windows® XP Embedded is the component-based version of Window®s XP Professional, which makes it possible to select precisely those system components which are required for a particular combination of hardware and software. The operating system is based on Windows® XP and is configured and thoroughly tested using the so-called Target Designer. It offers a high level of operational security and can be modified only to a very limited extent by the user. If suitably configured, Windows® XP Embedded also permits the installation of Compact Flash and in certain applications it is possible to run the system without UPS power backup. Intel® is a registered trade mark of the Intel® Corporation Windows® CE Windows® CE offers real-time capability and is a suitable platform for control tasks and motion control. The operating system demands less memory capacity than a complete Windows® XP system and requires only a limited or medium level of processor performance. Thanks to its miniaturised architecture, the system is easily accommodated on a Compact Flash memory card, producing robust systems for operation in close proximity to machines, with the additional benefit that these can be operated without a cooler fan or a hard disk. 1-2 PC-based Automation en 04/2007 Industrial PC Introduction Design We offer a range of versions for individual circumstances and applications: built-in versions for integration into control cabinet doors, control boards or machine enclosures and the Command Station of protection category IP65 for direct installation in close proximity to machines. The Command Station in an attractive aluminium designer housing is mounted in close proximity to the machine by means of a supporting arm or pedestal and can be extended by means of add-on components to become a complete control station with switching and command elements. 1 Built-in version Panel PC Stand-alone-version Command Station The Panel PCs are compact devices which combine display, operation and electronics in a common housing. The decentralised solutions consist of separate units, the industrial PC, which is preferably housed in a protected environment in the control cabinet, and the operation unit on site. This solution has advantages in relation to the cabling, operating conditions and accessibility of the drives. DVI/USB extender up to 35 m DVI and USB are interfaces from within the desktop PC area and suitable for distances up to a maximum of 5 m. The optional DVI/USB extender makes it possible to bridge distances of up to 35 m in an industrial setting without difficulty. A double twisted pair cable (TwinLAN, 2 x CAT-7) is used as the transmission medium for direct cabling in industrial applications. The complete engineering process from the planning to the configuration and commissioning can be undertaken via the central software tool L-force Engineer. 1 In addition to providing more consistent project management, the L-force Engineer tool deals with configuration and parameter setting of the field devices and offers powerful diagnostic and service functions. The programming is undertaken via the IEC-61131 Soft-PLC with its integrated motion control functions. High-performance low-power processors familiar to users of notebooks, including the well known Pentium M and Celeron M processors, which facilitate peak CPU performance with low heat generation, form the technological basis. In consequence, it is possible for us to maintain the compact dimensions of our EL devices whilst offering a robust construction which does not require a cooling fan. A USB connection on the front face with an IP65 cover flap facilitates the rapid and easy connection of peripheral devices, for example for servicing requirements. To protect the data from unauthorised access, this port can be switched off by means of software. The equipment options include UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and as an alternative a maintenance-free capacitor UPS (CAPS) for data retention (remanence), as well as for “shutting down” the system in the case of a loss of power. Our cleverly conceived combination of a fixed mounting frame (in stainless steel) and an insertable front module (in aluminium) ensures easy mounting and cabling of the system and facilitates problem free maintenance activities when servicing is required. Embedded operating systems Windows® XP Embedded Component version of Windows® XP, where the necessary software components and drivers can be selected by means of a target designer facility. The operating system is based on Windows® XP and offers a high level of operational safety, as it cannot be modified by the user, nor by means of the usual plug and play methods. With a suitable configuration, the system can be installed on Compact Flash. A further special characteristic is the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF), with which individual system elements can be protected against attempts to overwrite them. Depending on the application, this guarantees secure operation of the system in the event of a loss of mains power, even without a UPS. 1-40 Windows® CE Windows® CE offers real-time capability and is very well suited as a platform for control tasks and motion control. The operating system requires very limited system resources and thanks to its space-saving architecture, it can be accommodated on a Compact Flash memory card. If the application is suitably configured, the system is secure against network breakdowns and does not require an additional UPS (uninterruptible power supply).
