Page 768.
Henry Eaton was a naive of Wales, born there in 1750. At the age of twentythree he left his native land, crossed the ocean, landed in the United States and
settled in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (in 1773). He served in the
Revolutionary war and during his army life he contracted a disease, from the
effects of which he died.

Henry Eaton emigrated from Wales to Philadelphia with his mother 1760. He
was supposed to have owned a parcel of land there. He was a soldier in the
Revolutionary War when he met Violet Wallace, the daughter of Benjamin James
Wallace. Violet had been born in Ireland and came to Pennsylvania with her
parents.
Henry was a private in a Pennsylvania unit, which served under General Greene.
After he and Violet were married in 1778, General Greene's troops were sent to
South Carolina. Violet left her young son Thomas with her parents and followed
her husband. While they were in South Carolina they had an infant daughter but
Violet died from complications of childbirth. What happened to the infant
daughter is not know but there is a family tradition to the effect that the wife of
her husband's colonel took the child. Henry requested leave to go back to
Pennsylvania to see his son but only got as far as Philadelphia where he died
from dysentery.
The earliest recorded member of this particular line was Henry Eaton. There are
conflicting dates regarding his arrival in the colonies. Judge Henry King Eaton
thought that he was Welsh but the probability was the Henry Eaton and his
widowed mother were English and sailed from the nearest port of embarkation
which happened to be in Wales. They landed in Philadelphia in 1760. This date
has been documented for membership in the Daughters of the American
Revolution by the five who have joined as his direct lineal descendants.

Madison County, Illinois. He married (1) MARGARET W ALLACE POMEROY. She
died 04 Jun 1886 in Jackson County, Illinois. He married (2) SARAH KING 25 Feb
1808 in Adams, Mississippi, daughter of CALEB KING and MARY SWAYZE. She
was born 10 Feb 1787 in Kingston, Adams County, Mississippi, and died 29 Jun
1836 in Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois.
Notes for THOMAS ALEXANDER EATON:
Thomas was left an orphan when only two years old. Until he was fourteen he
lived among his relatives. He learned the blacksmith trade and migrated to
Natchez, Territory of Mississippi. After a few years he moved to Kingston in
Adams County, Mississippi, where he was a blacksmith for 15 years. He met
Sarah King, daughter of Caleb King and Mary Swayze. Three of their first six
children died in Kingston so they decided to move to Jefferson County, Kentucky,
in 1822. From there they moved to Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, in
April 1836.
Sarah King Eaton died on 29 June 1836 and was buried in the Lusk Cemetery in
Edwardsville. In 1839, Thomas married a second time, Margaret Wallace
Pomeroy, the widow of William Pomeroy, and the sister-in-law of his son, Henry
King Eaton's wife.
Thomas died on 14 September 1849 and was buried beside his first wife in Lusk
Cemetery. Margaret died in Jackson County, Illinois, on 4 June 1886.
To the first marriage there were born 12 children but six survived their parents.
Of the two children of the second marriage, only one lived to maturity. Those
descendants of the first marriage referred to the descendants of the second
marriage as the "Banjamites" after the name of the son named Benjamin Wallace
Eaton.

Notes for HENRY KING EATON:
Henry King Eaton was born at Kingston, Adams County, Mississippi, the home of
his maternal ancestors, and there was reared on his father's farm. He moved to
Jefferson County, Kentucky with his parents in 1822.
He was not content, however, to live the indolent life which satisfied his young
friends--boys in his own sphere of life; he was desirous of obtaining knowledge,
and lost no opportunity of gratifying the wish to be highly educated. He read and
studied, letting no day pass without increasing his fund of information. He did
not, however, devote his entire time to study. As a young man he taught school
in Kentucky for a while and then took a job working at building a macadamized
road from Louisville, Kentucky, to Nashville, Tennessee, for one dollar a day.
In the meantime he had met and then married Elizabeth Caroline Pomeroy.
When his parents decided to move to Madison County, Illinois, he and Elizabeth
were in the party that migrated. They bought some land and planned to farm by
the illness and death of his mother changed their plans.
He worked as clerk in a store during the winter of 1836 and later he, with his
brother-in-law, William Pomeroy, successfully conducted a furniture store. After
the sudden unexpected death of Mr. Pomeroy, he stayed in business two more
years before selling out.
In the fall of 1840 Mr. Eaton engaged in the manufacture of castor oil, with which
industry he was connected for a couple of years. He then found his time fully
taken up with the performance of the public duties, which he was gradually
assuming as a result of the insistent urgings of his friends. In 1839 he was
elected to the office of justice of the peace; in 1842 became a deputy sheriff in
Madison County. In 1843 he was appointed County Revenue Commissioner and
in 1845, commissioner to take the census. This was followed by his election as
Probate Judge of Madison County in 1846. He was re-elected in 1847, again in
1849. The title was changed to County Judge. In 1853 he was elected county
judge for a term of four years. After which he retired to the farm.
One of his achievements in 1847 was the rough drafting of an act regarding the
specific property that should be set-aside for widows and children in an estate.
The Madison County Senator presented the bill to the State Legislature and it
became, with some additions, a state law, which is still in effect.
Henry King Eaton was very interested in genealogy and his journal, now in
possession of his great-granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Eaton Dolley Cavanaugh,
has been in invaluable source of information to his descendents about their
ancestry.
He formerly belonged to the Whig party and cast his first vote for Henry Clay.
Mr. Eaton was regarded as one of the most distinguished politicians in his
section of the country. His active public life and his strict principles of integrity in
every phase of life made him admired and respected by a large circle of friends
and acquaintances.
When a young man Judge Eaton married Miss Elizabeth C. Pomeroy, and to this
union eight children were born, three of whom died in infancy. The names of
those who lived to maturity are as follows; Amanda C., the widow of Professor
O. C. Dake; Mary J. (deceased), who married Major Thomas J. Newsham;
William P., deceased; Margaret M., who was the wife of John H. Smith; and
Henry A., the immediate subject of this sketch.

Thomas Alexander Eaton was the first Eaton to graduate from McKendree
College in Lebanon, St. Claire County, Illinois back in 1849. In 1887, McKendree
granted him a honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. At first he taught school and
then became a Methodist minister. He was such a heavy man that he had to
have a specially reinforced carriage for his buggy which he drove from church to
church as a circuit rider.

Notes for PROFESSOR ORSAMUS CHARLES DAKE:
Orsamus Dake was the first professor of English at the University of Nebraska in
Lincoln and his small volume of poetry was the first book published in Nebraska.
He was also one of the founders of Brownell Hall, a private elementary and
secondary school, in Omaha, Nebraska. Two of their seven children drowned on
a picnic the family had along the Platte River.

Notes for W ILLIAM POMEROY EATON:
William Pomeroy Eaton attended McKendree College but the Civil war broke out
during his senior year so he enlisted in the "McKendree Regiment" and was a
fifth sergeant. Professor R. M. Morris was the colonel of the 117th Illinois
Volunteers. William returned to McKendree in Lebanon, Illinois and received his
bachelor's degree in 1868. He taught school a few years and also served as the
Madison County (Illinois) Superintendent of Schools. On 4 October 1882 he
married Elizabeth "Eliza" Ann Blackburn, the daughter of Samuel Blackburn and
Martha Knox. She was born on 7 March 1853 in Madison County, Illinois. They
lived on a farm in Hamel Township in Madison County, Illinois. William was
president of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company and a Windstrom Insurance
Firm besides farming. All their children were born at their harm home in Hamel
Township. William died at his home on 26 December, 1909. Both are buried in
the Quercus Grove Cemetery in Hamel Township.[v111t1196.ftw]

Henry Blackburn Eaton graduated from Edwardsville High School in Illinois,
attended McKendree College at Lebanon, Illinois before transferring to Illinois
Wesleyan University to get a law degree in 1908. He began law practice in
Edwardsville. On 3 March 1909 he married Emma Wilamette King (18 August
1882 - 13 July 1975). She was the daughter of Frank King and Mary Harrison of
Logan County, Illinois. Henry was elected County Judge in Madison County
(1914 - 1918) and was Illinois State Inheritance Attorney (1927 - 1928). He was
vitally interested in family genealogy and continued the research his grand father,
Judge Henry King Eaton, had begun. Besides being secretary of the Madison
County Historical Society, he was on of the founders of the Jersey Settlers
Association, Kingston, Adams county, Mississippi. He was a member of the
American Bar Association and Judicature Society of the United States. He died
at his home in Wood river, Illinois on 29 April 1949 and Emma died at home on
13 July 1975. Both are buried in the Quercus Grove Cemetery. The last two of
their children were born in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Samuel W. was born on the 26th day October, 1889, is a graduate of the
Edwardsville high school and is now finishing his senior year at McKendree
College.
Samuel West Eaton graduated from McKendree College in Lebanon, Illinois in
1914. He enlisted as a private in the field artillery during World War I and was
discharged at the end of hostilities as a second lieutenant. He was an employee
of the Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service at Gary, Indiana. After his
retirement, he and his wife moved to Port Charlotte, Florida. He wandered away
from his home one day and disappeared. He was declared legally dead in 1974.

William J. Eaton's birth occurred on the 20th day of December, 1884. His first
schooling other than the common schools was obtained in the Illinois State
Normal University at Normal Illinois. Later he, too, attended McKendree College,
where he met the lady who is now his wife - Miss Amy A. Pinkerton, a teacher of
vocal music at the above named institution; she hailed from Palmyra, Illinois and
is now the mother of one child, Abigail A. Mr. Eaton, her husband, is engaged
teaching in the High School at Vandalia, Illinois.

William He received his degree from McKendree in 1910. Later, he attended
graduate school in the Agriculture Department at the University of Illinois in
Champaign-Urbana. He taught 19 years as a Smith-Hughes Vocational
Agricultural teacher in Illinois and Wisconsin and then retired to farming in Hamel
Township, Madison County, Illinois. He died at his farm home on 3 May 1964
just after returning from a winter vacation trip to Landenberg Air Force Base,
California and Oregon. Both husband and wife were buried in the Quercus
Grove Cemetery near their home in Hamel Township.
William John Eaton attended graduate school, after he met and married Amy
Abigail Pinkerton, in the Agriculture Department at the University of Illinois in
Champaign-Urbana.
William died at his farm home just after returning from a winter vacation trip to
Landenberg Air Force Base, California and Oregon.

Amy Abigail (Pinkerton) Eaton, daughter of David and Mary (Crum) Pinkerton,
was born January 25, 1881 in Green County, IL. and grew to womanhood in
Palmyra, IL.
She pursued college work at Macomb Teachers' College and at McMurray
College, Jacksonville, IL, and was a graduate of the Krueger School of Music in
St. Louis. She also studied Plant Husbandry at the University of Illinois.
She had experience in rural school teaching and taught vocal music in
McKendree College in Lebanon, IL. She had a strong, well-trained voice and
had established a reputation as a soloist. As an Illinois Farmers' Institute
speaker and judge, 1928-42, she specialized in native flora and rugs, being well
known for her knowledge of flowers and plants native to Illinois.
She married William James Eaton June 8, 1910 in Lebanon, IL. They were

Thomas Marion Eaton graduated from Illinois State University Normal and taught
school in Clinton, Illinois. He enlisted and served as an Ensign in the Navy
during World War I. In June 1921 he married Ivah Burdick. They moved to Long
Beach, California. In 1934 he was elected Vice Mayor of Long Beach and them
Mayor in 1936. His campaign for representative to Congress from the 8th
Congressional District was successful in 1938 but he died during his first term.
After his death, Ivah served as a social worker with the Long Beach Police
