Thomson, CPA, CVA, Principal, Filomeno & Company, P.C. 2014 REWIND: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST YEAR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT } The MetroHartford Alliance partnered with sponsor Eversource Energy and with Hartford Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs (HYPE) and the Hartford Consortium for Higher Education on Startup Weekend, an intense 54-hour event that convenes local developers, graphic designers, marketing professionals, product/business managers and startup enthusiasts to build viable business plans around entrepreneurial ventures. The 2014 Startup Weekend focused on ways to improve the delivery of education. } We convened a working group focused on ways to leverage the Alliance Growth Fund to support startups and second stage companies. } The Alliance actively participated in the promotion of Bradley International Airport (BDL), including serving on the Steering Committee for the BDL Light Rail Feasibility Study to: Improve public transportation connectivity and accessibility between Bradley and the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield rail line. Provide cost-effective and efficient transportation service to and from Bradley. Support route development at Bradley Airport, including possible service on Aer Lingus to Dublin, Ireland. } The International Business Council continues to foster relations with international economic development agencies to support business development opportunities in Israel, Germany, and Central and Eastern Europe. } We partnered with Hartford Foundation for Public Giving on MetroHartford Alliance Progress Points video, highlighting the challenges and opportunities of the Hartford Region. “Personally, Startup Weekend triggered something in me. After almost 20 years of working in corporate America, it was time for a change. This experience helped me put some clarity on where I wanted to take my career.” - Kevin Chick of Hartford 2014 REWIND: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST YEAR HYPE Hartford Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs } Senior leaders from 12 MetroHartford Alliance Investor companies hosted HYPE members at CEO Luncheons in 2014, engaging them in conversations about the Hartford Region and their respective industries. } HYPE enhanced the volunteer committee experience in 2014 by adding a kickoff event in January, Ambassador training in June, and a year-end thank you reception in November. We saw increased participation across all committees, and solicited more nominations for 2015 leadership positions than ever before. } HYPE’s Civic Engagement Committee offered strong issue-based programming in 2014, including four of the group’s signature Keep Calm & Hartford On events, as well as additional opportunities made possible by partnering with organizations such as the Connecticut Forum, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and the World Affairs Council. } HYPE’s community impact has increased in each of our major annual efforts. Over 2,000 toys were collected for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford at our December 2014 Tons of Toys celebration; we raised $15,500 for The First Tee Connecticut and Junior Achievement of Southwest New England at Tee it Up for Charity at the Travelers Championship; and our 2014 community collections resulted in over 2,700 items donated to Hands on Hartford and Burns Latino Studies Academy. “When I first joined HYPE I was looking to learn about Hartford: the people here, what’s going on and what there is to do. I was able to meet a ton of interesting people and sample great restaurants and venues. I learned more about Hartford’s political process and the volunteer opportunities here. As an out-of-towner, HYPE really influenced my decision to remain in Hartford by providing opportunities to become more familiar with, and a part of, the community. “ - Colette Gregoire, Marketing Coordinator, BL Companies 2014 REWIND: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PAST YEAR CT IFS Connecticut Insurance and Financial Services Cluster }10th Anniversary • CT IFS celebrated 10 years since its founding (2003-2013) with a formal gathering in January 2014, convening past and present leadership. }Did You Know?
