Advanced Programmable Lighting Controls For Greater Worker Productivity and Increased Energy Savings FLUORESCENT Raising Worker Productivity Through Modern Lighting Controls FLUORESCENT Some things just seem to be a natural fit for productive office environments. Heating is one of them. Cooling is another. Fail to adjust either one to a comfortable level and employee productivity begins to suffer. Similarly, a modern lighting system needs to be flexible enough to reduce glare, provide just the right level of illumination necessary for different tasks and reduce eye fatigue to support optimum employee comfort and productivity. Leviton’s Centura Lighting System lets you realize this new formula for greater worker productivity. And, it comes just in time. Today’s workplace has become more dynamic then ever before with employees moving between multiple tasks during the course of a single workday. From the high levels of illumination needed to read documents with small text, or engineering drawings, to computer tasks requiring a significantly lower light level, each task requires an appropriate level of light. What’s more, that level differs for each employee, depending on both the immediate task at hand and personal factors. For example, the ability to focus and the acuity of the eye deteriorate with age. A sixty-year old employee’s eyes receive only about forty percent as much light as someone in their late twenties or early thirties, requiring significantly more light to perform similar tasks. For both reasons, the one-size-fits-all approach of defined light levels falls far short of the needs of a majority of office employees. In one study of workers in a "one-light-fits-all" environment, fully 57% of them complained about stress due to poor lighting conditions*. The message is clear. Provide workers with the ability to adjust light to keep pace with these changing needs and the health, comfort and productivity of your work force will improve. With the costs of people far outweighing all other costs combined in a company, even a modest improvement in worker productivity and staff retention will easily offset the costs of an advanced lighting control management system. Use of modern lighting controls as a tool to improve the wellbeing of employees clearly makes a concrete difference in today’s competitive environment. * Light and Health, Berlin Ergonomic Institute of Labor and Social Research (1994) 1 CENTURA™ Raising The Bar For High Quality Lighting Control Management The innovative new Centura modular lighting control system for dimming fluorescent ballasts** makes a decisive new contribution to corporate cost reductions by both raising worker productivity through greater individual control over lighting and by lowering the energy cost of energy-saving fluorescent lighting even further with innovative lighting technologies. CENTURA™ Responding To Changing Lighting Requirements Through User-Friendly Manual Controls The Centura lighting control system recognizes the motivating force of visual comfort in greater worker productivity by providing convenient manual override of automated settings to permit precise lighting for individual needs. Convenient access is realized via wall-mounted and infrared remote controls or directly through individual PC workstations. Employees get the right light for every situation and, in the process, provide productivity gains to the corporate bottom line. CENTURA™ Increasing Energy Conservation Through Innovative Lighting Control Technology Modern office buildings are becoming more intelligent by necessity. The apparent developing shortage of generating capacity and the rapid rise in energy costs demand that lighting, the number one source of energy consumption in commercial office spaces, be handled in new ways that optimize energy efficiency. Overall Energy Cosumption In the past, the benefits of energy-efficient lighting on the corporate bottom line came, for the most part, from investments in hardware, such as energy-efficient lamps Energy Cosumption and ballasts. The Centura Lighting System’s enhanced Energy Savings energy conservation capabilities start by picking up where these hardware-based technologies leave off. *For use with 0-10VDC Advance Mark VII™, OSRAM Sylvania Quickronic® Helios™, Energy Savings SuperDim™ and comparable ballasts only 2 Centura™ “Daylight Harvesting” Supplying The Missing Link Between Daylight and Efficient Indoor Lighting Control FLUORESCENT Centura starts by offering a fully automated lighting control system that factors in available free natural 0% 25% 50% daylight - a technique known as "daylight harvesting," – with the precise 500 lux control of fluorescent lighting levels to Daylight maintain a pre-selected level of Artificial light illumination, delivering greater energy cost reductions than "dimming only" systems. Centura Hybrid Lighting Control - A Modular Energy-Efficient System Built To Meet Ever Changing Needs Centura uses strategically located photocells to measure the changing 75% contribution of free natural daylight to a desired user-programmed level of light in a room. Centura then automatically dims or brightens the fluorescent lighting it controls, adding only as much artificial light as needed to precisely maintain that programmed level. The results are a seamless blending of light sources that goes virtually unnoticed by the room’s occupants as well as a significant reduction in overall energy consumption by as much as 60%. "Daylight Harvesting" technology maintains a programmed level of light by precisely adjusting the output of a room’s fluorescent lighting to compensate for changing levels of available free natural daylight 3 25% 5% 95% CENTURA™ Hybrid Lighting Control A Modular Energy-Efficient System Built To Meet Ever Changing Needs Centura combines the technology of "daylight harvesting " with a host of innovative energy-efficient modular lighting controls, including dimmers, timers, occupancy sensors and photo-sensors that dim or turn off fluorescent lighting when a space is not being used. Centura incorporates the ability to interface with any Leviton occupancy sensor to provide even greater energy savings. When single or multiple occupancy sensors are installed, programmed interior lighting is automatically turned OFF when the room is vacant and back ON to the programmed level when occupancy is detected. The use of movement sensors means energy savings up to a proven 50%. An exclusive Centura convenience feature permits easy programming of the in-ceiling Centura Dimming Power Pack through Centura companion Wall Controllers or from a PC, using Administrator software. This eliminates the need to program a hard-to-reach in-ceiling unit directly. In general, the Centura Dimming Power Pack has been programmed to follow a series of energy efficient protocols based on a least light law. By following the least light law, the Power Pack will adjust the light level to the least light called for by all of the inputs. For example, if the Power Pack is turned on (either manually or by an occupancy sensor) and the Light Maintain Level calls for a lower output level than the last manual level, the lights will adjust to the lower Light Maintain Level. On the other hand, if the manual preset level is lower than the Light Maintain Level when the Power Pack is turned on, the lights will adjust to the manual preset level – because it’s the lowest level in this case. (Note: You CAN manually override this level.) The least light law is applied at all times, except when overriding Emergency, Service Switch or Time Clock inputs are activated. Centura can be effectively tied into building emergency, load shedding and time clock systems. In the emergency mode, it switches lights to full brightness when the emergency system is activated. In load-shed mode, it reduces light levels to 25% of the current level selected to save energy during peak usage periods. The time clock function shuts lights OFF after the building is no longer occupied, FLUORESCENT offering up to 30% in energy savings. 4 FLUORESCENT Centura Modular System Components Bus Length ≤ 1640 feet Centura System Essentials Wiring Diagram SmartJack Terminated Terminated 0 0 Controller 1 1 2 2 2 n Dimming Power Pack n Occupancy Sensor 5 n n Photocell FLUORESCENT CENTURA™ Lighting Control System At Work Motivating Personnel With Lighting Keyed To The Task At Hand Optimum Lighting For Computer Workstation A worker sets a low light “maintain level” around her workstation for greater visual comfort via Leviton Personal Dimmer software on her computer. Subsequently, the blinds are shut to reduce monitor glare from outside light. Centura responds automatically to the drop in natural daylight by compensating with an increase in the fluorescent lighting’s contribution to the previously selected level of overall illumination or “maintain level.” Increased Lighting For General Office Tasks Increased Lighting For General Office Tasks Turning from the workstation’s monitor to more general office tasks, Centura is set to a full bright “maintain level” via Leviton Personal Dimmer software on her computer. The blinds are also opened again to let in more natural daylight. Centura automatically sets the fluorescent lighting’s contribution to 65% of the programmed overall illumination or “maintain level,” making use of free natural daylight to supply the remaining 35%. Full Illumination Aids Night Crew Clean-up Centura is set to turn lights ON after normal working hours when occupancy sensors detect motion. Night crew can then easily locate and tap Centura Dimming Controller for full brightness while cleaning. Lights shut off automatically when they leave. Lights then follow the “least light law” and turn on at the previously programmed lower maintain level when daytime employees return. 6 Optimum Lighting For Computer Workstation 25% Flouorescent Lighting Blinds Closed No Natural Light Increased Lighting For General Office Tasks 65% Flouorescent Lighting Blinds Open 35% Natural Light Full Illumination Aids Night Crew Clean-up 100% Flouorescent Lighting Blinds Open O% Natural Light 7 Ordering Information: Centura Fluorescent Dimming & Energy Management System Components Description Cat.
