Make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. At tonight’s football game vs.

Springfield, there will be a PINK OUT. Wear your Pink! The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is this Sunday. I will be racing in memory of my mother in law who I never got to meet. I started dating my wife her freshman year and her mother passed away the year before. Each time I line up at the start of the Race for the Cure, I get choked up thinking about Patricia Lippert. Please join me in the fight against breast cancer.

This coming Tuesday, Southview will be hosting the Sylvania Schools

Parent Organization’s (SSPO) Strong Schools Strong Sylvania Night. It runs from 5:00 8:00 PM. There is a $5 per person or a $20 cap family which includes an all you can eat spaghetti dinner and Cottage Inn Pizza. There will be carnival games, student performances, a 50/50 raffle, and more! Make plans for a great evening at Southview.

This past week was a busy one! On Monday, SV welcomed two speakers,

Mr. Jeff Streeter, who shared information on mental health well being, and

Officer Janet Sale, who shared information on the appropriate uses of social media.

Next week is Homecoming week. The Homecoming football game vs.

Maumee starts at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 30. Southview’s

Homecoming Dance is on Saturday, October 1, from 8:00.p.m. until

11:00 pm. Bids will go on sale Monday for $20.00 per person. We will have music, dancing, Laser Tag, games and a balloon artist. Get

CougarNow points for attending (formal attire). Students must have a parent signed Dance Form when purchasing bids. Forms are available in the main office.

Southview is working with Mercy Health to bring a Career Series to

Southview Students. Science Department Chairperson, Mrs. Abbey Cappel has been working with Mercy and has the first speaker scheduled for next

Tuesday, September 27. Dr. Barbara Stoos of Mercy College, along with one or more colleagues, will be sharing a presentation titled "What Can I do

With My Biology Degree?"

We are delighted to send Congratulations to our Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship

Competition: William Jiang, Siyin Liu, Abigail Miller, Nathan Podolsky, and Matthew Rothschild.

And also Congratulations to our Commended students: Omair Hasan and Michael Li.

Well done!

Last weekend the 2nd Annual 48 Hour Play Festival was held at Springfield High School. Students were given a genre, prop and line to incorporate and had 48 hours to write, rehearse and perform the show. Congratulations to the team of Brie Dona, Mariam Fneiche, Sunita Dhar, Jordan Topoleski, and

Nathan Davenport on winning Best Overall. This is the second year Southview has won best in show!

Juniors who take this test can qualify for National Merit Recognition and Scholarships. Sophomores can take this test for practice.

This test will be given at Southview on Wednesday, October 19, periods 1 5. To register, bring a $15 check or money order made out to “Southview High School” to the Guidance Office.

Deadline to register is October 11.

COUGAR OF THE WEEK—Gracie (Mary Grace) Rees

Mr. Brad Oatman, SV’s AP Psychology teacher has chosen Mary Grace Rees as Cougar of the Week. He shares that “Gracie is an outstanding student who works endlessly in and out of the classroom. Not only is she taking a demanding senior year schedule, she is also a leader in Mock Trial and Speech & Debate. On the field, she leads the defense in lacrosse for Southview. Her greatest gift is her artistic abilities. As a student aide,

Gracie completes a psychological related drawing on my white board every day to encourage and entertain my classes. My students look forward to seeing her new art as examples of her service in our community, not to mention her membership at McCord Road Christian

Church (Gracie and I attend the same church). Gracie is truly one of Southviews greatest assets.

Gracie is the daughter of Michael Rees and Stacie

Leffler. In her spare time she enjoys Mock Trial and two dimensional art (drawing, water colors etc.). One of her recent favorite books is “The Raven King” by Maggie Stiefvater. If Gracie could meet anyone in the world, it would be Alexander Hamilton, because he had a lot of really interesting ideas about things and it would be interesting to talk with him.

Congratulations, Gracie!

Alexa Bader, a Southview junior, represented Southview Band in the University of Michigan Marching Band "Michigan Band

Invitational" on September 17, 2016. She twirled in front of over

110,000 Michigan fans during the Michigan vs. Colorado football game in Ann Arbor. The day started at 8:30 a.m. with registration and practice with the Michigan band and twirlers. At 2:30 p.m. the entire band including the high school participants were part of the parade from Revelli Hall to Michigan Stadium. At the stadium they participated in the pregame performance, performed at halftime and the post game performance. Congratulations, Alexa, and thank you for representing SV!

Testing Information:

The new testing format has been decided upon by the Ohio Department of Education. Ohio’s State Tests (OSTs formerly known as the AIR tests for the past two years) will be given twice this year. The first testing window is

December 5th 9th. This testing time will be for students who need to make up a test, who did not score well previously on a test, or for students who may have to take many tests and can take some of the tests prior to the spring testing window. The school will let students and parents know who should be testing during this December time frame. In addition, spring testing will take place at the end of March, with the tentative dates being March 27 31. More information will be released in the future regarding spring testing dates, times, and procedures.

Students in the classes of 2018 and beyond (current juniors, sophomores and freshmen) need to take the OSTs as graduation requirements. The “end of course tests” the students must take are: ELA 1 (9th grade English), ELA II (10th grade English), Algebra I, Geometry, Biology, American History, and American Government. Since they are “end of course tests” the students take them the year they are enrolled in that specific class. Typically sophomores will be the heaviest testing year, with a traditional 10th grader taking ELA II, Biology, Geometry, and American History. This does not differ much from the days of the OGT when students took 5 tests starting their sophomore year.

Graduation requirements/points:

Students earn graduation points when taking the OSTs. Students must earn 18 points to be eligible for graduation, with the following being required:

Math minimum of 4 points

English minimum of 4 points

Science & Social Studies 6 points across both subjects

If your student is a current sophomore or junior, you can see the number of graduation points earned by looking at the

Ohio State Test results report that was mailed to your home on August 3rd.

If you have any questions about testing or graduation requirements, please do not hesitate to call or send an email to your student’s counselor or Libby McIlwain, Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning. We are here to help guide you and your students through this process.

11 Facts about Sexting

1.

Teenage girls have a few reasons why they participate in sexting: 40 percent do it as a joke, 34 percent do it to feel sexy, and 12 percent feel pressured to do it.

2.

Who will see your sext? 17% of sexters share the messages they receive with others, and 55% of those share them with more than one person.

3.

While nearly 70% of teen boys and girls who sext do so with their girlfriend or boyfriend, 61% of all sexters who have sent nude images admit that they were pressured to do it at least once.

4.

Nearly 40% of all teenagers have posted or sent sexually suggestive messages, but this practice is more common among boys than girls.

5.

Sending semi nude or nude photos is more common among teen girls. 22% of teen girls report sending images of this nature, while only 18% of same age boys have.

6.

15% of teens who have sent or posted nude/semi nude images of themselves send these messages to people they have never met, but know from the Internet.

7.

Sending or receiving a sexually suggestive text or image under the age of 18 is considered child pornography and can result in criminal charges.

8.

24% of high school age teens (ages 14 to 17) and 33% of college age students (ages 18 to 24) have been involved in a form of nude sexting.

9.

Sexting is defined by the U.S. court system as “an act of sending sexually explicit materials through mobile phones.” The messages may be text, photo, or video.

10.

In the U.S., 8 states have enacted bills to protect minors from sexting, and an additional 13 states have proposed bills to legislation.

11.

11% of teen girls ages 13 to 16 have been involved with sending or receiving sexually explicit messages.

Page 5

DROPPING STUDENTS OFF BEFORE 7:20 A.M.

Parents

Southview’s administration would prefer that you drop off your student(s) in the horseshoe by the flag poles in the morning prior to 7:20 a.m. Dropping off your child in front of the school, Sylvania Ave. entrance, at the same time the school busses are dropping off students puts your child’s safety at risk.

STUDENT PARKING PASSES

Juniors and Seniors need to purchase a parking pass for their vehicle if they are driving to school. The cost of a parking pass is $30. You may get your parking pass in Mr. Joplin’s office. We will be ticketing any vehicle without a parking pass displayed in the vehicle. At this time, we are not selling parking passes to

Sophomores.

STUDENTS STAYING AFTER SCHOOL

All students need to leave the building by 2:45pm.

For safety reasons, students who need to stay later than 2:45p.m. need to be supervised by a coach, a teacher, or a club advisor, etc.
