INTRODUCTION of Model year 2012
The R3. range of tractors has acquired new engineering and design features. From June 2012,
with the introduction of the Model Year 2012 package, the R3. range will be enhanced by
improvements designed to increase its competitiveness within a key market sector.
The new R3. family is made up of 2 models: R3. 90 and R3. 105.
This bulletin previews the new features of MY 2012.
ENGINE
The new R3. MY 2012 models are equipped with a four-cylinder SDF 1000 series engine
responding to Euro III A emission standards. Both engines are turbocharged and intercooled,
and 100% biodiesel-compatible.

Even in particularly tough weather conditions, starting of the engine is optimized by a timing
system that utilizes Hydraulic Roller Tappets (HRT). This device is designed to lift the plunger
slightly, and thereby induce a slight advance of the injection timing (until the engine coolant
temperature reaches 65 °C). Among the main benefits of HRT is the fact that it eliminates the
annoying white smoke produced typically by diesel units when started cold, optimizing the
response of the engine immediately.
In its most recent evolution, this engine has been optimized further in
terms of efficiency thanks to the introduction of a new proportional
viscostatic fan, which in addition to making the engine more
efficient also saves energy, as power consumption is reduced by
less than 4 HP, significantly benefiting performance and overall
efficiency of the vehicle.
The diagram below illustrates the operation of the viscostatic fan, which is based on a
concept as simple as it is effective; the two parts of the bi-metal plate (located between the
engine and the fan) react in different ways to temperature changes, with the result that the
plate deforms as the temperature rises. This in turn causes a valve to open, allowing the
high-viscosity fluid to flow into special chambers, where it begins to perform its function as a
clutch, engaging the fan speed proportionally with the engine temperature.

TRANSMISSION
The range offers new transmission options.
In addition to the choice of mechanical transmissions with synchronized mechanical reverse
shuttle (15 FWD + 15 REV or 20 FWD + 20 REV – LS versions) or transmissions with
hydraulic power shuttle (20 FWD + 20 REV or 40 FWD + 40 REV with Hi-Lo – GS versions),
the MY 2012 range now offers customers an “intermediate” mechanical transmission
(on LS versions) with mechanical shuttle and Hi-Lo:
•
5-speed synchromesh gearbox, 4 speed ranges with creeper, synchronized mechanical
shuttle and Hi-Lo, giving a total of 40 FWD + 40 REV ratios. Minimum ground speed
0.43 km/h.
•
5-speed synchromesh gearbox, 3 speed ranges, synchronized mechanical shuttle and
Hi-Lo, giving a total of 30 FWD + 30 REV ratios. Minimum ground speed 1.48 km/h.

With the introduction of MY 2012, changes have been made to the rear lift, and new features
added.
On all versions of the R3. 90 model (LS and GS), the lift assistor cylinders will have the
same diameter of 70 mm, to enable better balancing when implements are raised, while
maintaining the same maximum lifting capacity of 4,300 kg.

In the case of R3. 105 models (LS and GS) there will also be the option of a rear lift with
electronic control, giving precise and effective control over implements during operation. In
addition, R3. 105 models will be available with assistor cylinders of higher specification
(optional), which are able to increase the capacity of the rear lift to 6,200 kg.
HYDRAULIC SYSTEM: SPOOL VALVES
Another new feature of the MY 2012 package is the selection of auxiliary spool valves for the
R3. 105 model. In addition to the existing 6 rear ports (3 spools), there is now the option of 8
rear ports provided by the addition of a further electrohydraulically operated 2-way ON/OFF
spool valve of low rated flow (25 l/min) controlled from a rocker switch in the cab; useful for
implements requiring positional control (e.g. plough with hydraulic top link, hedge/verge cutter
carried on folding arm, etc.).

CAB
Cab versions of the MY 2012 R3. range feature a new one-piece structure (70 mm higher)
with 4 slimline corner posts giving improved visibility. With this new cab, the upward angle of
visibility has been increased by no less than 8°. I n practical terms, the cab presents a greater
expanse of glass and significantly fewer blind spots.

Another engineering and styling improvement introduced with MY 2012 concerns the airconditioning condenser and its new cover (60 mm lower than its predecessor) for versions with
standard cab roof (both light and dark grey). The condenser is the same for the version with
high visibility roof, which means superior cooling performance and — thanks to the new cover
— a more streamlined look to the roof itself.

With the MY 2012 package, there are also new features added to the cab interior. Two new
side consoles have been added: one for the version with mechanically controlled lift, and
another for the version with electronically controlled lift.
New Rx console for version with mechanically controlled lift
Previous Rx console
The pictures above show the new right hand side console for the mechanically controlled
rear lift, compared to its predecessor. The lift levers, the hand throttle and speed memory
button, and the rear auxiliary valve levers, are all positioned much more comfortably than on
the previous console. The new console also incorporates a handy covered compartment,
and the rocker switch for the electrohydraulically controlled ON/OFF spool valve fitted to
machines with 8 rear external pressure ports.

the differential lock and 4WD engagement, the
front and rear PTO clutches, the PTO AUTO
function, the engine speed memory, the
electronic lift lock/release function, as well as

controls. The positioning of the auxiliary spool
valve levers, the rocker switch for the ON/OFF
spool valve and the covered compartment is
the same as for the version with mechanically
controlled lift.

As for the hand throttle, in the case of models equipped with electronic rear lift, the control is
positioned on the right hand side of the instrument panel together with a second engine
speed memory button.
Also adopted for the MY 2012 range are new sound-absorbent materials (around the
instrument panel, under the fenders) and a floor covering of open-cell foam material,
combining to improve the level of soundproofing still further.
With the introduction of the MY 2012 package, the R3. range also focuses strongly on an
issue more important than ever in modern agriculture — SAFETY.
In effect, the new machines are fitted with a number of devices designed to make working
conditions that much safer:

Completing the MY 2012 R3. package are homologation for road use, and the availability of
tyre pairing 540/65 R24 - 600/65 R34 (model 105 only).
