CPI02 LO SPIRITO DEL PIANETA
DATES: 25 May – 14 June 2016
WORK: FESTIVAL
VOLS: 12
AGE: 18 +
LOCATION: Chiuduno (BG) Italy
BACKGROUND: Lo Spirito del Pianeta is an annual international festival of indigenous and tribal cultures
organised by the Italian NGO “Sesto Sole Chicuace In Tonatiuh” since 2010. The festival gathers tribal
groups from all over the world, let them introduce their cultures at first hand and make them better
known and understood through different performances (dances, songs, rituals, conferences, workshops).
Every night different indigenous and tribal groups perform their traditional arts. The entrance to the
festival is free and every year it attracts more then 100.000 visitors. Various activities for children and
adults are organized in the festival area (games, contests, workshops etc.). The festival also includes a
craft fair with about 130 stands of traditional handicrafts. There are Italian, Spanish, Argentinian and
Ethiopian restaurants, a vegetarian and a vegan restaurants, a Kebab restaurant. The goals of the
festival are to promote and to facilitate the meeting, mutual understanding and brotherhood of people,
to overcome some stereotypes about traditional cultures, to discover and enhance tribal cultures and to
reveal the history of little-known ethnic groups, to support ethnic groups and tribes in protection and
preservation of their environment, local economy and traditions. The organisers and numerous national
volunteers of the festival believe that even if we may look different and come from different parts of
the world, we are all humans of one kind and we should help each other. The profit made during “Lo
Spirito del Pianeta” by selling food, drinks and crafts goes to support some projects of development aid
that improve people’s lives while preserving their traditions. Please make sure you share these values
before applying to this project! Website: www.lospiritodelpianeta.it/en/
WORK: International volunteers will make up a bigger team of volunteers helping set up, run and take
down the festival. Before the beginning of the festival the group of the international volunteers will help
to build the facilities of the festival (tents, yurts and other structures). During the festival the
volunteers will help maintaining site infrastructure e.g. cleaning the area and waste sorting (for later
recycling), helping at food stands and restaurants to prepare, sell and serve the food, arrange the area
for the performances, etc. However the volunteers may be asked to do other jobs according to the
festival needs. At the end of the festival the volunteers will take down the festival. The international
volunteers will work for around 6/7 hours per day. The work will be done in pairs or small groups in
different shifts (to be arranged together with the campleader) in the morning, afternoon and mostly
late in the evening. During the free time the volunteers will have the opportunity to join concerts,
performances, cultural events, etc. in the festival area. Please note that flexibility and adaptability are
required, and there might be some physically demanding work from time to time (under the sun or rain
sometimes as the weather could be unpredictable in June). Be ready to work in a big team of national
volunteers and hopefully become wonderful members of this great family! International volunteers will
have 2 free days, to be arranged with the festival organisers.
