NEBB TAB Certified Professional Review Seminar
Building owners and tenants are concerned that the environmental performance of buildings must be optimal while the operating cost should be minimal. These goals can only be accomplished when a building’s HVAC and hydronic systems are properly balanced. Three major steps used to achieve the proper operation of the HVAC and hydronic systems and a desirable climate are testing, adjusting and balancing (TAB).
NEBB TAB Firm
NEBB TAB certification offers tangible proof of competent firms and professionals qualified in the proper methods and procedures for testing building systems for optimum performance. NEBB TAB certification program establishes industry standards, procedures and specifications for environmental systems TAB.
It sets minimum educational standards and other requirements for the qualification of Certified
Professionals who perform this work and establishes educational programs for training professionals in the proper methods and procedures for environmental systems TAB.
NEBB TAB Certified Professionals
Develop and plan the work
Handle report preparation
Recommend corrective action
Set overall safety plan
Maintain instruments and calibration program
Have experience with control strategies, sequence of operation, control systems, equipment and software
Review, check, sign and stamp final tab report
The course will review HVAC principles involved with TAB work and HVAC testing, including:
SEMINAR & EXAM PREPARATION: In addition to attending this seminar, it is recommended that you take the Home Study Course as well as a complete review of the NEBB TAB Manual for
Technicians.
You should be well versed in the application of mathematical formulas that are pertinent to
TAB and have a full working knowledge of the instruments required for certification by NEBB, including when, where and how to use them.
2
FORMULAS AND THEIR USE: A number of formulas are in use daily by a TAB Technician and should be committed to memory and applied appropriately when required, such as ratios of speed vs volume vs pressure vs BHP for air and hydronic systems. There are other formulas that become necessary on a, not so often, occasion such as V-belt length, BTUH, sensible, latent and total heat, among many others. You will be provided with a list of commonly used formulas for your use and the application of those formulas.
ELECTRICITY: The seminar will re-familiarize you with single vs three phase systems, how to measure voltage and amperage, overload protection, calculation of brake horsepower and the need for using safe practices and safety equipment to protect you while gathering the necessary measurements.
FAN LAWS & CURVES: Fan affinity laws will be covered and you will be shown how to apply known data to fan curves. We will touch on individual fan systems as well as fans in series and fans in parallel.
PUMP LAWS & CURVES: Pump affinity laws will be covered and you will be shown how to apply known data to pump curves. We will touch on individual pumping systems as well as open systems, closed systems, pumps in series and pumps in parallel and NPSH requirements.
AIR SYSTEMS: Various configurations of air systems will be discussed such as supply, return and exhaust systems as well as constant volume, variable volume heat recovery, induction systems, active chill beam systems, makeup air systems.
HYDRONIC SYSTEMS: Various configurations of hydronic systems will be discussed such as one pipe, two pipe, three pipe and four pipe systems; heating water systems, chilled water systems, condenser water systems positive displacement pumps, primary/secondary systems, tertiary pumping systems.
PSYCHROMETRICS: We will cover the use of a psychrometric chart as it applies to TAB and as it relates to the physical properties of air and the relationship of the properties to each other. We will spend considerable time learning to plot psychrometric charts and understanding the principles.

PROBLEM SOLVING: One of the many functions of TAB is to identify problems and either solve them or provide the necessary information for the responsible parties to address and correct the problem. This function involves good solid logic capabilities that require the technician to exercise a systematic approach to the identification and resolution of problems or difficulties exposed by the TAB process.
The review will cover engineering principles, charts, diagrams, problem solving and techniques involved with TAB work. In addition to practical TAB experience, Seminar attendees must have a minimum working capability in mathematics, including geometry and second-year high school algebra.
*Attendees should be aware that this is a review Seminar and attending the Seminar alone is insufficient for successful completion of the TAB Certified Professional exams. The material presented, along with time allocated, is only meant to provide an overview of the engineering principles and field practices required of project-management level personnel.
Candidates for the NEBB CP TAB Certification.
Others with a strong background in HVAC and TAB work who consider that an extensive review in a classroom setting will enhance their technical education, i.e., facility managers/ operators, mechanical contractors, engineers, energy auditors, building commissioning agents and others interested to learn about TAB.
