HETHER you dress lor yourself, your vanity, lor one, two, or three men, or against
other women, "BEt interesting, to be in style,"
admonishes the Fashion League of America,
which held se~R ion8 in Chicago recently. Calm
in the Iace 0-( the dazzling colors, deliberative
in the riol oi s tyles, lhese lash ion arbiters decla red, "Not smart, not chic, not modish, but
interes ting."
It is like lhe old saw about the hen. Which
is which? CloChes or wearer? Do clothes
make a wearer, or does the wearer make the
clothes? Clolhes are irrelevant, regardless of
what the debutante may say. Here at Iowa,
in a college town, it is the squirrel coat, and
the bank account, which is the "Open, ~esame"
to extra·curricular activities. It is poor eval·
uation. Here the man who disdains gl'ey flannels, II knicker suit, a red neoktie, and loud
plaid golf socks doesn't register. Here, the girl
who wears what she wants, who doesn't chew
gOm, or use slang, doesn't belong.
They're
both s nubbed and apologized for. Yet, if being
interesting means being individual, it is appalling the number pf poorly dressed men ond
women nt Iowa.
Clothes ore only absurd curtains which obscure personality, and even a wealth of bright
colors cannot usher into view a faded soul. The
loveliest fUl' coat cannot obscure a low "lQ."
We are fast becoming 11 race of mannequins,
pitting our' body, one against the other, in a
race for n mate. We usc our bodies to display
clothes. We carry away after meeting people
an impression of screaming colors and no per·
Bonality. Some of the loveliest, well·dressed

people who wear them.
gaunt, the British youths grow into gaunter
men, with sinews tayt, and eyes cleal'.
F. E. Bailey, the grandson ot the late ~,ord
G1anusk recently reached Canada, sailing t h'ird
class. He wo., prepared to rough it in the wild s
there. Americans may tweak the hairs of the
lion's tail, may rail and laugh at the slow·mov·
ing Brit ish mind, which is not so alert to catch
a joke, but England has reared a roee of
s pm:tsmen. The love of an open chase, an equal
fight, is inborn in tlte Britisher" whq are still
glad to think of the days of chivalry, when
knights rode long and far for tbejr ladies fair.
The structure of a nation will totter if her
man power has water in its veins. '.l'here ,"uat
be sand, and grit and limestone. The populace
in America laughed gaily over the repeated
tumbles of Wales from his horse. They poked
Iu" at his riding, but American sportsl1\en
were afterwards heard to admit that the falls
of Edward occurred with no more regularity
than attend any horse rider. Wale
always
mounted his horse again. He was no quitter.
I America, the land whose coffers are choked
with inc;ome and inheritance taxes, would do
well to emulate her older 1\eighbor, in her em·
phasis on outdoo~ life. YO\lng limbs should be
pounded into shape; ~oo much sedentary habit breeds race deterioration.

Teachers' Pay
HE SCHQOL teachers of Vera Crut have
. formed a union to force the authorities to
pay t'hei~ sa.laries which, they deda re, have not
been pai!l them for more than four months.
The situation Ivls put the teachers of the Mexican city in severe financial strolts and the syndicalist measures were a matter of necessity.
In our municipal curriculum the matter of
Jlrovid ing for the school tea~her is remembered
last. It is u sort or unpleasant necessity. We
do not lace the quesuon of the importance of
the teacher in the life of the community. Yet
the teacher is entrusted with the growing generotion at a lime ' when their futures are beingmolded.
W~ owe them 1\ living that is on a por with
other prof~ssjon8 of the u~eful type.
And
~ inc e the leacher is 1\ powerltll influenco foI'
gooc\ or for bad, it is important that we should
have the right kind of people in such places of
!eadel·l\hip. We must then realize the importIInce of the school teacher in the liCe of -today,
and if we expect the right kind of educators to
mold the youths of the present generation we
must give them lhe treatment their ,~orlh deserves.
