Modular Microscopes
Cerna Series Microscopy Systems
The Cerna Series is a modular microscopy platform for a wide range of experiments
and applications. Designed to let you configure a system to your exact experimental
requirements, it is especially useful for setups that require a large workspace beneath
the objective or wide-angle access to the objective and other optical components.
Our Cerna rigs are complete systems that fully support conventional microscopy
techniques, including epi-fluorescence, DIC, Dodt contrast, confocal laser scanning,
and intrinsic signal imaging. The modular design allows them to be easily modified to
better suit specific experimental needs.
Alternatively, users can choose to start from one of eight pre-configured optical
paths and add components of their choosing, or, for the most flexibility, pick from the
Cerna Series’ large selection of interchangeable modules and build a system from
the ground up. Interfaces for cage and lens tube systems and optional breadboards
allow custom components to be integrated with Cerna Systems.
Modular Imaging Systems
Plug and Play: Cerna Rigs
Cerna Rigs provide complete, customizable imaging solutions for
the life sciences. Every system is based on one of Thorlabs' slim
Cerna Microscope Bodies, minimizing the footprint on the optical
table and maximizing the space beneath the objective. The rigs are
completed with motorized sample stages, cameras, light sources,

Each Cerna widefield rig includes accessories for one or more widefield imaging modalities,
chosen to match the needs of your experiment. Each rig has an epi-illuminator paired with
a broadband light source with continuously variable intensity. The transmitted light module is optimized for brightfield, DIC
imaging, or Dodt contrast to help visualize interfaces and structural details in cell cultures and tissue slices.
Compatible with Industry-Standard Objectives and Fluorescence Filter Sets
Cerna rigs are designed to accept M32 x 0.75, M25 x 0.75, or RMS-threaded objectives, Ø25 mm emission filters, and
25 mm x 36 mm dichroics. Adapters for other objective sizes are also available. The epi-fluorescence modules can also
accept beamsplitters for reflected light imaging applications. Objectives and filter sets are available separately from Thorlabs’
extensive optics catalog.

CRE1005: Cerna Electrophysiology Rig with Epi-Fluorescence, DIC
Imaging, and Confocal Imaging
Confocal Imaging System: Obtain high-resolution
fluorescence images of cells and tissue slices at up to
400 fps, with four excitation and detection channels.
DIC Imaging Module: Use DIC to generate
contrast in transparent samples at visible and NIR
wavelengths.
Translating Platform with 2" of X and Y Travel: The
platform provides a large 24" x 18" (600 mm x 450 mm)
surface for holding slides, perfusion chambers,
micromanipulators, or other equipment that
needs to translate together to prevent patch
breakage.
CRE1005 Electrophysiology Rig
This Cerna rig includes a DC-stabilized
light source with liquid light guide for epiillumination, trinoculars with 10X eyepieces,
DIC module, micromanipulators, and dual
objective holder. Objectives, filter cubes,
and filter sets are available separately.
Confocal Imaging Rigs
High-Speed Imaging at up to 400 fps
Our pre-configured confocal rigs include galvo-resonant scan heads
that support scan rates up to 400 fps. Short pixel dwell times minimize
the effects of phototoxicity and unwanted photobleaching.
Antireflection-Coated Scan Lens for 405 - 700 nm
The wide-field-of-view scan lens is color corrected and antireflection
coated to simultaneously support excitation wavelengths down to
the UV and clearly image the deepest-red emitting fluorophores.
Motorized Pinhole Wheel
Light exiting the scan head is spatially filtered through one of sixteen
round pinholes mounted in a motorized wheel controlled through the
ThorImageLS software, allowing the pinhole size to be adjusted from
Ø25 µm to Ø2 mm without the need for realignment.

Popular Fluorophores
400 µm
For these confocal imaging rigs, Thorlabs has paired the four
excitation laser wavelengths with a set of filters that match the
emission and absorption profiles of popular fluorophores. Each laser
source features an all-fiber design that minimizes maintenance

Complete Optical Paths: Cerna Microscope Bodies
For the researcher who desires a more hands-on approach to setting up their microscopy system, Thorlabs offers a line of
microscope bodies that feature complete optical paths. Light sources, detectors, filter cubes, filter sets, objectives, and
sample holders are available separately, allowing the microscope body to be easily customized and modified by exchanging
modules as your experimental needs grow.
Slim Profile Maximizes Table Space
All Cerna microscopes feature a slim design that eliminates the massive base
and housing of typical microscopes, maximizing table space. The simplest
Cerna microscopes have a path for epi-illumination only, making them ideal
for experiments involving large, intact samples that are too thick for imaging
techniques that use transmitted illumination.
Image Multiple Fluorescence Channels
The microscope to the left features a six-cube epi-illuminator, useful for creating
images of multiple fluorescence channels. Microscopes are also available with
a single-cube epi-illuminator for reflected light imaging or viewing multiple
fluorophores through the use of a multi-band filter set.
Motorized Focus Control
The objective holder accepts industry-standard objectives from major
manufacturers such as Olympus and Nikon. Like all of our Cerna microscopes, the
objective height can be adjusted by 1" using the motorized focus control.

Transmitted Illumination: Brightfield, Dodt Contrast, and DIC Imaging
For thinner samples, Cerna microscopes are available in configurations to
support brightfield, Dodt contrast, or DIC imaging.
High-Contrast Imaging of Unlabeled Samples
Both Dodt and DIC imaging techniques create high-contrast images of unlabeled
samples. DIC imaging produces the best contrast in thinner samples, while Dodt
contrast imaging can produce comparable results in thicker samples that are
difficult to image with DIC.
Translating Microscopes and Platforms
Thorlabs offers Cerna microscopes configured with a translating platform that can
accommodate large samples and experimental apparatus. We can also
install microscope translators, allowing the sample to remain stationary
on the table while the field of view is adjusted.
Customization is Simple
Due to their modular design, the microscopes can be
easily modified, allowing our applications engineers to
optimize the microscope for the needs of each researcher.
