Kasler President, Cypress College The Commencement ceremony affirms students' search for knowledge and marks an important educational milestone. It is based on tradition and ritual established several centuries ago to provide an occasion for students, faculty, staff, family members and guests to recognize the achievement of an academic goal. At Cypress College, this goal is earning an Associate Degree. By individual path, each graduate has reached this goal and is now and into the future, one of ours – a Cypress College graduate. My very best wishes to you for a bright and fulfilling future as you continue your education, pursue a career, or take your place in the community. I also encourage you to keep in touch with your instructors and come back to the campus for a visit now and then. Congratulations! We are very proud to claim you as graduates. THE MEANING OF ACADEMIC DRESS Academic dress, which includes a gown, a hood, and a mortarboard cap, originated in the oldest universities and colleges. In fourteenth century England the statutes of most colleges and universities forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown which provided warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. The tailoring of gowns was strictly governed. In the early days of Oxford, any tailor who departed from the authorized design of the gown, “even by a nail’s breadth,” was to be punished by the vice chancellor of the university or college. The four basic kinds of degrees awarded by the colleges and universities are the associate, the bachelor of arts, the master of arts, and the doctorate. The holders of those degrees are distinguished by their gowns and the hoods. The associate degree, awarded by community colleges, signifies completion of two years of specific work. The Gowns Most academic gowns are black. The cut of the robe and sleeves, as well as the trimming, indicates various academic degrees. No trimmings are permitted on the gowns for the associate, bachelor of arts, or master of arts degrees. However, the gown worn by those who have earned their doctorate has a front facing of velvet and three bars of the same velvet across the sleeves. Mortarboard Caps There is no general rule for the position of the tassel on a mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have required candidates to wear their tassels on the right side during commencement exercises and to shift them to the left side at the moment the degrees are conferred. This custom replaces individual hooding which was practiced many years ago and still remains in effect at some universities. The Hoods Hoods fasten around the neck, drape over the shoulder, and fall down the back. Historically, hoods had several uses. They were used as a head covering; a cape; a receptacle for carrying books and other personal items; and as a bag to collect alms, since most medieval scholars were quite poor. Hoods are worn by those who have earned the master’s degree or doctorate. The colors on the hood represent the field of study and indicate from which college or university the individual received the degree. 4 25 SUMMER GRADUATES 2010 Cypress College wishes to express appreciation to the following: ASSOCIATED STUDENTS Ushers: Nadine Gharaibeh Tiffany Asw Gabriel Zapeda George Zuniga CYPRESS COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT Podium Flowers provided by: SECRET GARDEN FLORIST 6076 Lincoln Avenue Cypress, CA 90630 714/827-7999 Stage Greenery provided by: LAKEWOOD NURSERY 4114 Lincoln Avenue Cypress, CA 90630 714/828-9464 BREA OLINDA NURSERY 2601 Valencia Ave. Brea, CA 90630 714/993-076 Tuxedos provided by: CLINTS FORMAL WEAR 8405 LaPalma Avenue Buena Park, CA 714/523-8472 24 Rasha Rawhi Abuqamar* Karina Jazmin Acevedo Gregorio Anaya** Crystal Nicole Anderson Exequiel Juntilla Ang* Esmeralda De Jesus Avina* Genesis Bedoy Tabitha Leigh Belshe Gregory Michael Bennett Sabrina Leeann Bouck* Ashley Nicole Bowerman Ben Bright Anthony R Cabading Montserrat A Cardona* April Marie Carter* Virya Chhom Mineli Cisneros* Donna Le Ann Clark Kla Mishaun Cook* Alex Jorge Cormalis Rhonda Jean Council** Angelina Michelle Davis* Awilda Delgado Rita Diaz* Gina Rizki Effendi Amanda Joyce Encineas* Cassie Lynn Fox* Shelly Rhea Franco* Stacie Leigh Fuller Tomohiro Go Grace Eunhye Ha* Raymond Alan Hanson Channing Danielle Hayes Erik Allen Hempe* Lisa Gaye Hernandez* Thomas Anthony Himmelheber* Kimberly Hutchens Teresa Maria Ibarra* Evelyn F Jimenez Liberty Dawn Johnson David Charles King* Elizabeth Melinda King* Austin James Krehbiel Christa Lynn Lacombe Katherine Marie Lauer* Jennifer Le Daniel Lee Rachel Jillian Lefler Erika Llamas* Oscar Lozoya Jerome Nigel Madlambayan* Justin Andrew Mcguire Jordan Michael Meadows Gracie Angelica Melendrez* Michelle Kathe Montes* Carla Namiyo Morioka* Olga Milena Navarro Warren Travis Nordhagen-Sorenson* Steven Joshua Norton* Ruth Osikweme Obidah* Brittany Anita Jean Oriaz Ian Pan* Alicia Parra Matt Ryan Prince Sergio Proa Michelle Ramos Jason Edward Reiss Summer Grace-Ann Rhee* Graciela M. He sits on the NAIA Men's Basketball Ratings Oversight Committee, has coached junior teams internationally, and has hosted a number of basketball camps and tournaments at the high school level and below. While a student at Cypress College, Moore played basketball for legendary coach Don Johnson. By name recognition, Moore likely isn’t the most-recognizable of a group that includes NBA standouts Swen Nater and Mark Eaton. However, Johnson calls Moore "THE most inspirational athlete in Cypress College Basketball history.” Double underlined, all caps: “THE.” Clearly the revered Johnson holds Moore in the highest regard. “John became the role model for future players,” Johnson wrote in nominating Moore for the Outstanding Alumnus award. “He was the essence of the ‘TSU’ (tough, smart, unselfish) athlete. John’s loyalty to Cypress College is, in my mind, unsurpassed. He feels his position in life today is a direct result of the transformation process that occurred here.” After 18 seasons as head coach of Westmont Men’s Basketball, Coach Moore has accumulated a record of 355-197 (.643) at Westmont and an overall record of 434-271 (.616) in 23 years as a head coach. His accomplishments at Westmont include three Golden State Athletic Conference tournament championships and six trips to the NAIA national tournament, including a NAIA Final Four appearance in 1999. Moore has coached 22 All-GSAC players, seven NAIA All-Americans, and seven All-American Scholar-Athletes. In addition, each senior in his program has graduated with a degree from Westmont. “Coaching and teaching is more meaningful for me today than it was eight to ten years ago,” said Moore. “We come to coach because there is a relational element which becomes more significant the deeper you get into it. The success is always going to be meaningful. We are competitors as coaches. But there is a greater success that lies in a meaningful life.” Moore, a member of the Cypress College Athletic Hall of Fame, transferred to Westmont in 1976, where his career total of 422 assists ranks fourth, despite playing only two years. Outside of his coaching duties, Moore runs basketball camps and high school tournaments. Moore also has international experience, taking part in several tours throughout Asia, where he spent 10 years of his childhood. He has coached the junior national teams for the countries of Bangladesh and Sudan. Moore served as part of the USA Basketball Committee in 2002, helping to select the 19-and-under team which included such players as Carmello Anthony, Deron Williams and Christopher Bosh. Moore comes from a basketball family. His brother Mike starred at Westmont in the mid-’80s, while his sister Beth was a member of UCLA’s national championship team in 1978. Moore’s wife, Rachel, served for several years as the director of her family’s Lavin Basketball Camps. Her brother, Steve, is the former head basketball coach at UCLA and is now an ESPN basketball analyst. 19 CYPRESS COLLEGE 2011 PROFESSORS EMERITI Minnie Allison . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A goal-oriented student and member of the two-time conference champion women’s volleyball team, she will continue both her studies and athletic participation at Texas Tech in the fall. Chiffer says that she became interested by and curious about the criminal mind — especially those of serial killers — when she was a young girl. The fascination continued with TV shows such as Unsolved Mysteries and various documentaries. Although her interest in the criminal psyche remained, Chiffer says that in high school she also wanted to learn more about disorders such as anorexia nervosa and depression. “Her performance has been at one of the highest levels I have seen over the past few years in the course,” said Randy Martinez, Chair of the Psychology Department. “As a student, she displays the characteristics of a dedicated learner. Ms. Chiffer is inquisitive, objective and has a passion for acquiring knowledge.” Likewise, volleyball has also shaped Chiffer’s life. During the past decade, she has traveled to cities across the nation and spent countless hours in the gym practicing drills to perfection. Head volleyball coach Nancy Welliver played a key role in bringing Chiffer to Cypress College. During her time here, the team recorded its first two conference titles and participated in the California state championship tournament — finishing second in the 2010 season. In September 2010, Chiffer was recognized with selection to the San Diego Mesa All-Tournament Team. During her freshman season in 2009, Chiffer was honored with 2009 All-State Tournament Team and All-League Second Team selections. “Kelly is one of the hardest working players that I have had the pleasure of coaching,” said Welliver. “She not only works hard in the gym, but works equally, if not harder, in her courses. She is always determined to give her very best and willing to help her teammates when they need it.” Outside of school, Chiffer volunteers with the non-profit Brain Rehabilitation and Injury Network. Through B.R.A.I.N., she interacts with individuals ranging in age from 18-65 with acquired brain injuries. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Texas Tech, Chiffer plans to earn both a master’s and PhD in hopes of becoming either a forensic or clinical psychologist. “My goal for the future is to become an independent, successful woman and to help others overcome obstacles and attain goals of their own.” 16 SPRING CANDIDATES 2011 Tehnysha Marie Moore* Valerie Theresa Moradzadeh* He sits on the NAIA Men's Basketball Ratings Oversight Committee, has coached junior teams internationally, and has hosted a number of basketball camps and tournaments at the high school level and below. 19 CYPRESS COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER FOR 2011 Timothy Naftali Timothy Naftali is the director of the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, a part of the National Archives and Records Administration. 4 25 Hood Trim Colors Agriculture . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
