ASID OC has proudly partnered with The National
Multiple Sclerosis Society as our charity beneficiary for this new and exciting designer showcase.
The MS Society is dedicated to funding research
for a cure and to address the challenges of everyone
affected by MS. The Pacific Coast Chapter serves
over 45,500 people affected by MS in San Diego,
Orange, and Imperial Counties. Through fundraising
events like the Dream Home, the chapter is able
to raise vital funds for programs, services, and
research in the community. For the first time ever,
the designer showcase tour will be fully accessible and designed with multi-generational living
in mind.
After a two year hiatus, the design house concept
has been carefully re-considered and completely
re-invented. Under the leadership of chapter president Char Cowan, the board painstakingly evaluated a variety of concepts but ultimately decided
on an innovative de-constructed approach which
has developed into the Dream Home. With a “build
it and they will come” mantra, the new Dream
Home will be constructed within a massive store-

The IDEA Show, our new format for the ASID Trade Show, was held on
January 19, 2012 to an overwhelmingly attended crowd. There were over 250
designers, architects and students who attended the event and all had a
wonderful experience. There were 5 CEU’s, as well as the Key Note speaker,
Steve Jones of better shelter, who gave an inspiring overview of his career. 24
Carats provided a no-host bar and yummy dinner selections. The Lime Truck
was parked on the curb outside for the 1:00-5:00 PM crowd.

A NOTE FROM PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The IDEA Show Education Program Kicks off
ASID Orange County’s CEU offering for 2012
By Gigi Harris, Aliied ASID
2012 ASID COC Professional Development
Our IDEA tradeshow on January 19th was a huge success. Thank you to all of our members
who attended the educational program of our tradeshow. ASID Orange County offered
five Continuing Education Unit (CEU) courses that covered a wide array of topics.
Steve Jones, better shelter
Bruce Goff, ASID, DSS Speaker
Series
Our Keynote speaker for the day was Steve Jones of better shelter who presented “2012
Design Ideas: How they impact you, your business, and your clients”. Steve’s career is
rooted in the surf industry, having spent 25 years in marketing and design, working for
various companies, most notably Quicksilver, Inc. During his 20 year employment at
Quicksilver, Steve served as Vice President – Visual Arts for all brands at Quicksilver,
including the Quicksilver, Roxy and DC brands. Steve also teaches design courses in the
fashion department at Orange Coast College. Thank you, Steve, for your informative and
inspiring presentation!
We want to thank our CEU presenters for taking time out of their days to share their
wealth of knowledge with our members.
• Bruce Goff, ASID, who traveled all the way from Arkansas to deliver his CEU course
entitled “Fire and Design for Residential and Commercial Spaces: The Good, The
Bad, The Money. This course is part of the ASID Distinguished Speakers Series,
which is exclusively sponsored by Broan-NuTone. Heather Storm of Purcell Murray,
exclusive distributor of Broan-NuTone in Orange County, was present to introduce
our DSS speaker.
• Vince Overmyer of Vero, who presented the course entitled “Do Natural Lime and
Cotton Wall Coverings Create Soothing Living Spaces?”
• Cambria McLeod of Kohler, who engaged attendees with her informative topic on
“Water Conservation”
• Vincent Moiso of Maison Stone/Quarry C, whose course on “Marble Use in the
Kitchen” drew much interest and attention
• William Swan of Inspire Solutions, Inc. who delivered an informative and interesting
course on “Performance Textiles”

every two years. This is a required condition of membership. The current reporting period
began January 1, 2012 and will end December 31, 2013. Please refer to our website for upcoming CEUs at

STEP PROGRAM UPDATE
Over the years STEP has been the most recognizable preparatory program for the NCIDQ. STEP has seen a decline in participation for some time now, so this
year ASID is taking time to re-evaluate the STEP program and research other options. The content, learning objectives, and learning outcomes will continue
to be developed by ASID. While ASID at the national level is looking into the possibility of creating such a program in-house, we are aware that many depend
on the expertise of the STEP instructors to help them make the NCIDQ a little less daunting.
ASID Orange County is exploring options for hosting an NCIDQ preparatory course in the interim for our chapter members directly with a qualified instructor,
but this is dependent on interest and demand.
Would you like to participate in a summer NCIDQ preparatory course for the exam in September? If so, please email Gigi Harris at professionaldevelopment@asidocc.org with your level of interest.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT
Who is Kathy Booker?
By Laura Yorba, Allied ASID
2012 ASID COC Newsletter Editor
Kathy Booker is an active member of ASID and the owner of
WorkSpace Consulting. In 2010, she transitioned from a career
as a designer and planner in a corporate environment to start her
own business with a vision to fill a resource gap in companies
managing change in their office environments.
With a unique background of experience in both the design and corporate worlds,
Kathy is an expert at understanding the organizational culture and processes that
impact decision making from the client side of a corporate office relocation or renovation. Her most recent project was the design & relocation of the headquarters of
Verengo Solar, a rapidly expanding company that had outgrown its start-up facilities
in Orange to a larger office space in Torrance.
“Our business is changing and we need to change with it to be successful. As designers,
we have the training and opportunity to expand our services beyond the traditional
role. The Verengo project is a great example of a company that we were able to provide
guidance to from beginning to end of the project. Their employees were already
stretched to the limit with their core responsibilities and no one had the bandwidth
to add managing this project to their workload.” Says Kathy Booker, ASID, IIDA, LEED
AP.
From 2008 - 2010 Kathy led the design and relocation of Taco Bell’s new corporate
headquarters in Irvine. Her responsibilities included leading functional employee
groups through programming and design processes and collaborating with the project
team to design a forward-looking work environment that embraces Taco Bell’s culture
and brand vision. Kathy worked with senior leaders through communication and
presentation of design in planning sessions. She researched furniture systems and
specified both workstation and ancillary products and finishes, managed outside architects, vendors and consultants on project design and implementation activities, and
monitored construction progress and delivery of product. Her role also included
ensuring that the logistics of moving 600 employees went smoothly, and she led the
punch and post-move audit processes. A passion for the emerging sustainable design
movement led Kathy to become the first LEED Accredited Professional at Taco Bell
and to register the corporate office move project for Commercial Interiors consideration. Her efforts led to a LEED Gold designation by the US Green Building
Council.
Kathy earned a bachelor's degree in Architecture from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and
studied architecture in Copenhagen, Denmark for a year. She later earned an MBA
from Pepperdine University. Out of college, Kathy worked for several Orange County
architectural firms and began to focus on interior spaces and their relationships with
the people living and working in them. Her work in space planning and office
design was a natural progression of this interest, leading her to start a company that
provides design, space planning & project management services to organizations that
are changing the size, location or character of their office environments.
New ASID
Associate
Membership
By Maria Deganis, The Plexi Gallery,
Industry Partner of ASID
2012 ASID COC Membership Director
ASID understands that interior designers are by trade
a diverse group of creative professionals with expertise
that ranges from industrial design to organizational
behavior, art history, graphic design, project management and furniture and textile design…these are just
some of the specializations that contribute to the rich
experience of the interior design community. Keeping
that in mind National has added a new Associate Member
Category for ASID members.
Associate Membership Qualifications
Eligible individuals are practicing interior designers
who can demonstrate six years of full time interior design
experience and provide a college transcript reflecting a
minimum of an associate's degree in a subject other than
interior design.
Demonstrated Work Experience
Those applying for Associate status must demonstrate
their work experience by submitting ASID Work Experience
forms that document six years of full time interior design
work experience. The forms must be completed by representatives from at least two of the following four categories:
• Existing interior designer member of ASID
• Existing Industry Partner representative member of
ASID
• Current or Past Employer
• Current or Past Clients
• Demonstrated Higher Education
A copy of an official college transcript, either in paper
or electronic format, verifying course completion and
credit hours is required.
Continuing Education
With two sons in college and an attentive golden retriever, Kathy spends her spare
time designing at a potter’s wheel, where she creates luminaries and other ceramic
pieces.
Look for Kathy at our general meetings and introduce yourself.

December Holiday
Madness Mixer
By Nazgol Seyedi, Allied ASID
2012 ASID COC Programs Chair
ASID gave back through its Holiday
Madness Mixer! We partnered with
Furnishing Hope and their Wounded
Warrior program which provides a healing
environment for those in need. We invited
everybody to take this opportunity
to contribute a gift card in any

denomination which will in turn
be distributed to every returning
"wounded warrior" that Furnishing
Hope provides installation and
design services for. We collected
the gift cards at the Holiday Mixer.
ASID OC’s December Holiday
Madness Mixer was held at The
Hotel Hanford in Costa Mesa. It
was a happy hour with different hors d’oeuvres being served, various
wines, a host bar, and no party is complete without a DJ, of course!
Virginia Payne, Marion Taylor, Farrah
Smith, David Rance, Lori Hankins
The party started with Char Cowan welcoming the attendees and wishing
everyone a very joyous holiday.
The ball room was decorated with a beautiful
white Christmas tree, white, silver and gold
decorations and the DJ was playing holiday
music. This all added to the festive mood.
An hour into the party and a couple of glasses
of wine later, people were on the dance floor
and proving that ASID OC members can rock
it just right!!
Rick Campos, Adriel Cogdal
We would like to take this opportunity to
thank all the nice staff at the Hotel Hanford,
especially Heather Morgan for all their effort
and the fabulous DJ, Payam Jafari for making
the party warm and fun.

Be an active ASID
Industry Partner Member
By Richard Downes, Style Bath Enclosures, Industry Partner of ASID
2012 ASID COC Industry Partner Liaison
Many ASID Industry Partners aren’t aware of how to effectively make the
most of their membership and newer IP members are often intimidated
and unsure of how to connect with Designers. Trade association memberships alone don’t negate the need to proactively market your product or service
and getting in front of the design community as frequently as possible. It’s
about creating working relationships with designers & not just relying on the
ASID Membership Directory or solely paying your dues.
Being an ASID Industry Partner is another form of networking & marketing,
but with a highly targeted audience. Certainly being in the midst of a group
of people who are your best potential customers is an incredible opportunity.
ASID events are a great place to begin building solid relationships with potential customers. Attending ASID events and meeting people alone will not do
it. The real value is found with becoming an active participant with ASID
events.

Garage Storage and Flooring
Tailored Living of Orange County is the home organization
specialist Interior Designers turn to for clever storage
solutions, professional project management and new
revenue opportunities.
Active participation and sponsorships will give you visibility, but it is the
development of personal face-to-face relationships with individual designers
that can yield long term business. It takes time to become a visible active
contributing member sharing your expertise as a volunteer with the organization as a whole. Attendance of events will deem an Industry Partner memorable among the ASID Designers. What ultimately earns loyalty from designers
is your participation by attending every event and chapter general meeting,
volunteering on a project or committee, sponsoring events or meetings,
providing free seminars & open houses, offering to host a Lunch & Learn or
serving on the ASID Board. Seminars, workshops, open houses and Lunch &
Learns give the designer the opportunity to get to know you and your business, but more importantly, it provides designers with the tools and knowledge that can be passed onto their clients. Designers love to learn how things
work!

Obituary of
Sue A. Reeve
by Dorian Hunter, FASID
Sue A. Reeve was born in South Dakota December 7th, 1936 and died
January 7th, 2012, in Santa Ana, Orange County, California.
For her long time dedication to her profession, she was awarded the
honorary title of Life Membership in the American Society of Interior
Designers. She served as president of the Orange County Chapter
and on the ASID National Board of Directors. Sue attended the Chicago
Art Institute and the renowned Parsons School for Design in New York.
IVESTER AND REEVE , a design practice in Fullerton in the 1970’s,
was in partnership with Cliff Ivester, FASID. Sue’s first professional
position was with DORIAN HUNTER, FASID, INTERIORS and Gallery
and she later assisted CAROLE EICHEN, honorary ASID member, in
Fullerton. Sue also worked for Dan Steen ASID and Jason Titus
ASID, both of whom she was very fond and were good friends.
Though only 5’ 2" and eyes of blue, and barely 100 lbs., Sue was very
tough, capable and ambidextrous. When working in the Gallery or
installing a picture rail, she could hammer a nail in a corner and then
change hands and continue nailing. One story has her climbing a ladder
in order to repair a leak in her own roof. She was very determined
and thorough in whatever her task.

Tresham gives a subtle twist to the tradition of classic Americana by
introducing a modern eclectic sensibility to the designs. Endlessly playful, yet
elegant, Tresham furniture, sinks, toilet and receptors invite you to live your

She also had a soft spot for animals. Friends will remember she loved
her dogs and she took in stray cats and kittens.
Sue will be greatly missed. She was very outgoing and friendly, and had
many friends. If she was in a room she was hard to miss.

Aging in Place and Custom Cabinetry
By Matthew Taylor, Wildwood Designs, Inc, Industry Partner of ASID
Aging in Place and Custom Cabinetry
As the baby boom generation ages, many older Americans are staying in their
homes longer. In addition, the needs of returning veterans with disabilities has
increased awareness of the need to create a more user-friendly home environment, with the emphasis on greater accessibility. Many are electing to incorporate universal design into both new construction and remodeling projects.
In the realm of custom cabinetry, we are seeing increased demand for cabinet
layouts that allow easier access to appliances and storage areas. For example, we
recently completed a traditional mahogany kitchen for an older couple. Appliances
included a Subzero refrigerator with 2 large refrigerator drawers, a separate
Subzero under counter freezer, and an all drawer dishwasher. The husband had
a bad back, and stressed that he did not want to reach too high or bend too low,
so pullout shelves were used in the base cabinets, and a large drawer below the
downdraft cooktop had pegs arranged to organize dinner plates. Columns on
either side of the refrigerator had spice shelf pullouts built in, and a swing up
mixer lift was installed in the island cabinet. Attention was paid to aisle clearances so a wheelchair can navigate easily.
Universal cabinet in process- Buddy Montoya and Matthew Taylor
Additional adaptations possible in the kitchen include swing-out blind corner shelves, pull-down
upper cabinet shelf mechanisms, and island cabinets with lowered eating counters. Microwave
drawers placed below counter level allow easier access than units place below upper cabinets or
above a hood. The latest hardware innovations include servo-drive mechanisms allowing cabinet
doors and drawers to be opened with just a light touch.
In the bathroom, sinks placed in lowered counters with open space below allow access for wheelchairs. Strategically placed grab bars, walk-in bathtubs, and built-in shower benches are popular.
Closets often feature swing-down closet rods which allow the upper tier of clothing to be accessed
more easily, as well as allowing more space below.
Adaptations such as these make it possible for homeowners to live safely and more conveniently
in their homes for a longer time, and manufactures, contractors and designers continue to provide
innovative solutions to an ever-growing need.

Ten Myths about Universal Design
Adapted from an article written
by Rosemarie Rossetti, Ph.D.
President, Universal Design Living Laboratory
www.UDLL.com Rosemarie@UDLL.com
From: Action Magazine on November 4, 2010
MYTH: A home using universal design looks ugly,
institutional and stereotypes the home so people
know it was designed for a person with a disability.
REALITY: Professionally designed homes with
universal design features and products enhance
the beauty of a home while making it functional
for people with disabilities, as well as convenient
for people without disabilities. Much of a home’s
beauty comes from the finishes of the plumbing
fixtures, appliances, hardware, cabinets, countertops, wall treatment, and flooring. Universal design
products are available in these beautiful finishes.
MYTH: Universal design costs more due to the
building design and products with universal design
features, such as windows, appliances and plumbing
fixtures.
REALITY: Those with universal design features are
not more expensive as a general rule. In fact by
adding design features and products that support
universal design, the home will have more value
to the occupants because it will be more usable for
a lifetime.
MYTH: Universal design takes more square footage.
REALITY: Space planning is critical in home design
especially when the homeowner uses a wheelchair.
By creating an open plan with fewer hallways,
square footage can be conserved. By putting adequate
space in the kitchen and bathrooms, there will be
a lot more accessibility, comfort, and convenience.
A universal design home need not have additional
square footage, but rather have adequate room for
a person to navigate the home from a wheelchair.

SPRING 2012 |
CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER
MYTH: The resale value of the home will be less
due to limiting the number of buyers who would
be interested in these universal design features.
REALITY: Universal design is for people of all ages
and abilities. As the US population gets older, especially the baby boomers, they will be remaining in
their homes longer. Many are opting to renovate
their homes, and others are choosing additions
to help them to age in place. Some are purchasing
new homes of a smaller size than their last home.
They are looking for all the features and comforts
to be able to maintain their independence and stay
in their homes for the rest of their lifetimes. Universal
design features provide for safety and add value to
a home.
MYTH: The Americans with Disabilities Act has so
many regulations that are very complicated to
follow when designing homes with universal design
features.
REALITY: The ADA does not apply to single family
housing unless federal funding was utilized. Private
homeowners do not have ADA laws to follow.
MYTH: The builder and their subcontractors are
used to doing it their way and will not follow my
design properly to include universal design features.
REALITY: Builders are becoming certified through
the National Association of Home Builders in the
Certified Aging in Place Specialist program and
are learning how to utilize universal design principles. Builders are insisting that their subcontractors read the plans and follow the procedures
for building new homes. As products are ordered
by the builder, the universal design features are
already a part of the design. As builders construct
more homes with universal design features, universal
design will become the new standard in the building
industry.
MYTH: A home containing universal design features
will be harder to pass a building code inspection.
REALITY: By the very nature and definition of universal
design, there are no practices that go against federal
and state building codes. There are also provisions
for local variances should a question arise in the
plan review stage.
MYTH: Universal design homes have ramps at the
front door causing the home to be labeled as a home
for a person with a disability.
REALITY: In order to create a no step entrance, there
are some instances where a ramp at the front door
is the only solution. However, by modifying the
grade around the home, there are many properties
that can be designed with a no step entrance. If
ramping is needed elsewhere, such as in the garage,
side door, or rear door, the ramp is not visible from
the street.
MYTH: Universal design is restricted to building a
ranch style home.
REALITY: First floor living is the goal for universal
design, however, multilevel homes can also be
constructed with provisions for access to the upper
and lower floors by way of elevators, platform lifts
and stair lifts.
MYTH: Only a small number of people with disabilities and the elderly will benefit from universal
design.
REALITY: Universal design is human-centered design.
The inclusive design of spaces and products will
benefit people of all ages, with or without physical or mental limitations. No one can predict when
a short term or long term disability will be a part
of our lives. It is far better to plan for homes to
accommodate us as we age rather than to be forced
out of our homes when circumstances change.

Student Rep to the Board
By Tamra Stratton, Student ASID, 2012 ASID COC Student Rep to the Board
This spring, our ASID Orange County interior design student chapter and clubs hit the
ground running in a flurry of ASID events. On January 19th, students had the opportunity to survey new products and vendors at the ASID Idea Show, followed almost
immediately by Student Career Day at the Laguna Design Center on February 3rd. At
the Career Day, students were able to explore multiple interior design disciplines with
guest designers at round table discussions and were inspired by guest speaker Sabina
Vavra who encouraged them to “be daring”. In February, ASID student school chapters
assembled their teams for the annual Noah’s Arc Student Design Competition to benefit
the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, and are now busily planning installations. I can’t wait to see the results of all the hard work. Final designs are open for
viewing, and to purchase items in the space, the first week of May at the four
Salvation Army locations. Student designers have also continued to make their skills
and presence known by participating in key events like the ASID Dream Home at SOCO,
a Universal Design project, held during March, to benefit Multiple Sclerosis. Students
have put forth a great effort to be a vital part of the design community by participating, volunteering and giving back to the community. Way to go students! You are
getting the year off to a fabulous start!

After a Great “Green Day”
event with lots of vendors,
prizes and fun activities,
including 3 “green” cars
that auto dealers brought
for us all to check out, the
Fall Quarter closed with
our Portfolio Show for our
Graduating students. This

was held at The Hanger
at the OC Fairgrounds followed 2 days later by Graduation
Ceremonies. Melissa Rihn, one of our club officers, was
chosen from all of the Grads, in all the majors, to be the
Student Speaker and also won “Best in Show” judged by a
panel of Professionals Designers at the Portfolio Show.

Jobs, jobs, jobs was the talk
when 100 employers attended
IDI’s portfolio show. IDI’s
student chapter co-hosted the
event held in the Student Center.
Graduates showed portfolios
to employers while the drawing
for prizes, food from Crepes
Bonaparte food truck and a
photo booth, contributed to
the upbeat and festive atmosphere.
Current events include ASID’s

Students have the extraordinary opportunity to work with interior designers from
the Chapter. As a chapter fund raiser, an
architectural tour of the Getty Center and
the Pacific Standard Time exhibit are scheduled, with students traveling by tour bus to
the Getty Center.
The IDI Student Chapter officially received
the awards for ASID Student Chapter of Year
2011-Honorable Mention and Website of the
Year 2011, for the second consecutive year.
Congratulations students!

SPRING 2012 |
CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER
The Winter Quarter is just beginning and we have lots of
great things planned! We had our group attend the ASID
Idea Show on January 19th and The Student Career Day at
Laguna Design center on February 3rd. We are excited as
we anticipate the visit with our inspirational ASID President
Char Cowan and Emerging Professionals Chair Rona Graf
at our first meeting of the quarter. We combined our ASID
and IIDA chapters, under the banner of our ID Club, and
IIDA members will be coming to speak to us later in the
quarter. We will have a panel of professionals from different
areas of Commercial Design that will be informative and
inspiring! We attended some great field trips, including one
to the Getty on January 20th.
We will be participating in the IIDA Haute Couture Fashion
Show for our 5th time, this year. We always have a great
time preparing and participating in this event and we are
sure this year will be no different. We hope we will be able
to participate in the Designer Runway this year, also. In past
years, the Designer Runway has fallen during our finals week
and the same night as our Portfolio Show and we hope this
year it will be different!
Generating the most excitement this quarter is the ASID
Dream Home. Ai students are designing the Gift Shop. It is
a small space, but we plan to make it WONDERFUL! So be
sure to come visit us there! We hope to see you at ASID
Dream Home 2012!

Saddleback College
The Saddleback College Interior Design Students were very busy with several
community projects in the start of the 2011-2012 school year. With the HomeAid
OC Project Playhouse just ending and ASID Dream Home just getting started
we have been very busy. We had several student volunteers helping in the
ASID OC IDEA Show in Anaheim, more will be involved with ASID/Salvation
Army Noah’s Arc Designer Challenge and we will once again be involved with
Saddleback College’s annual Gala event this spring. We will be designing the
beautiful centerpieces for all the tables. We are looking forward to a funfilled spring with creative ideas ready to explode. Right now, we have speakers
from CCIDC, NKBA, and IIDA lined up for this spring’s monthly meetings,
which are held on the last Monday of each month.
