The U.S. Olympic training facilities are enthusiastic supporters of Cold Laser
Therapy (CLT), with over 50 US Olympic Sports teams incorporating

she said.
She said that she rotated the laser over the "belly" of his hamstring muscle

nurse/physical therapist in Boston, usually treats Patriot players' injuries with
medical massage. For the big game, she used low level laser therapy on the
athletes' most troublesome pain spots for the first time. Before using the cold
laser, Spicuzza was skeptical. "I am not into gimmicks," she remarked. "I didn't
think it would help."
But she changed her mind after seeing how the laser expedited healing of
some players' soreness and pain. "I don't think [the improved recoveries were]
a coincidence, " Spicuzza said. "It did help. I used it on a flared-up sciatic
nerve, and the player had relief soon after treatment."

• Bacterial Infection – In research led by Michael Hamblin of Mass. Gen.
Hospital and Harvard Medical School, mice with surgically induced wounds
were dosed with bioluminescent bacteria to create potentially lethal infections.
Utilizing a 665 nm laser diode photodynamic therapy (Low Level Laser Therapy)
the researchers found that "infected wounds healed significantly faster with the
PDT method. PDT shows promise as a topical antimicrobial alternative that may

• Allergic Rhinitis – Neuman & Finkelstein studied 50 patients in a doubleblind randomized study. Following treatment with a 660 nm red laser, 72% of

• Laser irradiation of tissue cultures has shown that units of light energy
(photons) are absorbed by enzymes, which react to light within the cell. Visible
red light is absorbed within the mitochondria and the infrared light is absorbed

• In a mammalian cell, this results in a change in membrane permeability,
increased ATP levels and increased DNA production. The photons picked up by

• Red light aids in the production of ATP in cells, which increases cellular
health and energy. The radiation (energy) in normal cells stimulates adjacent
cells to divide in the normal process of regeneration and healing. Laser light
stimulates abnormal tissue to activate normal inter-cellular radiation, thus
stimulating the normal healing process to start again. The photons produced
by laser light normalize tissue by activating enzymes within cells. Once
activated, enzymes within a cell trigger a chemical reaction in which more
enzymes are activated in a domino-type effect. Low Level Laser Therapy has no
effect on normal tissue. Photons will only be absorbed by cells that need them.

Photobioactivation - Light is the energy of life
Photobioactivation is a term applied to a light stimulus that initiates and/or
accelerates a physiological response. Other stimuli used in medicine, for
example, are temperature, ultrasound, electrical power, electromagnetic fields,
etc.
In 1965 the Russians discovered that a single frequency light in a laser can stimulate
DNA in damaged cell tissue. It could be infrared, red, blue, or green, as long as it was
single although, as you move toward the red end of the spectrum, the rate of cellular
regeneration increased. A single frequency in the green range might improve kidney
function by 40 times, while the red would be about 4,000 times faster. Over the years
they found that infrared, red, and violet wavelengths were the fastest way to
regenerate tissue. Recovery from injuries went from ten days to two days!
The Scalar Wave Laser Probes come in all three colors/wavelengths.
When the Russians used a pulsed laser light, the tissue healed rapidly. If they used a
continuous beam, they found that it sedated the cell and relieved the pain. When a
single frequency pulsed light hit the cell, it actually stimulated the cell to start producing
more protein than it normally does, and as a result, the cell would heal. Even when they
removed the light, the cell continued healing. The continuous beam had a reverse
effect. It actually caused the cell membrane to relax; it killed pain, reduced inflammation
and made muscle tissue relax. The Scalar Wave Laser has settings for both kinds

In the mid-seventies, at the University of Chicago, researchers discovered that the
average wavelength of human cell tissue is between 600 and 720 nm; 660 is the
mid-point. Since red light ranges from 625 to 700 nm, this is why the red light
probe is so effective for healing skin issues. And since red is the color of iron, it
also explains why the red frequency absorbs better in hemoglobin.

Today, thousands of clinical evaluations and over 300 double blind
studies confirm its efficacy in numerous therapeutic applications

Low Level Lasers that deliver under 500 milliwatts (mW) power output do not
have a thermal effect. This means that they are extremely safe and provoke no
adverse skin reactions or sensations during therapy. Laser Therapy is a soft
and gentle, non-thermal therapy without side effects. This contrasts the use of
surgical application of LASERS, which heat or burn, coagulate, vaporize and
carbonize tissue with their high-energy rates (from 3 to 50 Watts).
Photochemical Effect
The laser energy is absorbed by metabolically active pigments of the
mitochondria in various cutaneous and subcutaneous layers of the skin: this
involves two enzymes of the oxidation chain, Cytochrome a/a3 and
Flavoprotein.
When the proper wavelengths are applied and absorbed, it is supposed that the
changes in the stereochemical conformation induced by an electro magnetic
field leads to an increase in activity and improves the concentration of ATP by
up to 200%. In addition, an increase in oxygen and glucose metabolism is
observed. A significant effect of LLLT is an optimized function of the Na-K
pump at the cell membrane, an increased protein synthesis (prostaglandin,
enzyme) and a significantly higher rate of mitosis.

Clinical Applications of Low Level Laser Therapy
“Arthritis. The arthritides (osteo and rheumatoid forms) have been a popular
target disorder for researchers in the last decade of cold laser investigations.
The results of several well designed randomized clinical trials have given
clinicians good reason to be encouraged with this form of treatment. Cellular
research has provided some possible mechanisms of action for these positive
results including laser mediated increases in cellular proliferation, enhanced
collagen synthesis, conversion of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, increased
osteoelastic activity, reduced inflammatory markers, increased lymphocyte
response and stimulation of the electron transport system leading to enhanced
ATP production.

therapy research has had to date in the area of wound healing. With the use of
larger diameter cluster emitting beams of mixed wavelengths, clinicians can
efficiently treat large wounds in short periods of time. Brosseau et al conducted

“Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Although not as studied a clinical condition as
other pathologies, this landmark cold laser investigation occurred at the Flint,
Michigan GM plant when Anderson et al studied the effects of cold laser on
carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In this particular study involving 119 subjects,
half received sham laser plus physical therapy while the treatment group
received real laser plus physical therapy.
“The results of this randomized, controlled and double blinded study were that
there was a statistically significant treatment effect shown by the real laser
group, furthermore, the authors stated that low level laser therapy
