Join the ‘green’
lighting revolution…
…with NXP Semiconductors
What if you could provide truly energy
efficient lighting solutions?
Your innovative partner
in energy-saving lighting
Lighting accounts for about a fifth of our energy use and is responsible for a third
of our carbon emissions. So it stands to reason that switching from incandescent
lights, which waste a huge amount of electricity, to low-energy lighting can make
a big contribution to reducing energy consumption.
Governments around the world are considering
introducing a ban on incandescent lamps within
the next few years. And ‘green’-related programs
in many countries are encouraging the use of
low-energy lighting solutions such as Compact
Fluorescent Lighting (CFL), High Intensity Discharge
(HID) lighting and the newest technology to join
the energy-saving lighting revolution – Solid State
Lighting (SSL) based on the latest high-efficiency
power LEDs.

Providing the right light…
…to reduce energy wastage
Low-energy lighting solutions are now penetrating all areas of lighting: in homes,
in offices, in shops and on the roads, energy-efficient lighting solutions help
reduce our energy consumption.
In home lighting, for example, CFLs have been
popular for many years as a replacement for
incandescents, and the latest generations are as slim
and compact as their incandescent counterparts.
Now SSL is also expanding into this area, combining
energy-saving and long life. SSL also offers flexibility
for creative designs in architectural lighting projects
and it is increasingly being used in office and
4
industrial lighting projects. NXP Semiconductors
offers a wide range of components that help you
design energy-efficient lighting solutions. Our
drivers and ballasts support the development of
energy-efficient solutions for all markets for which
energy-saving matters: street and road lighting,
shop and retail lighting, residential lighting as
well as office & industrial lighting.
Residential lighting solutions
With rising energy bills and ever tighter regulations on energy consumption,
expectations on efficiency of residential lighting are increasing.
Whilst CFLs have been the major technology
associated with energy-efficient residential lighting
over the past decade, SSL is also moving into this
area and promises to provide even more innovative
solutions for the future. NXP offers cost-effective
driver solutions for both these lighting technologies.

and Ethernet connectivity).
LED drivers
For SSL, our SSL15xx and SSL17xx families of offline
SMPS controllers are ideal for driving the latest
High-Brightness LEDs with high efficiency and low
cost. The latest addition to the range, the UBA3070,
is a versatile high-voltage LED driver controller IC
designed for LED-string applications where a large
number of LEDs need to be driven in an accurate
and highly energy-efficient way.
LED color controllers
We offer a wide variety of LED color controllers
based on the I²C control bus. The new PCA963x, for
example, can drive quickly-changing displays using
the Fast-mode Plus I²C protocol for I²C speeds up
to 1 MHz.

What if you could have one easy solution to have your LED application under control? Our mains
connected LED solutions can be used to save energy and have new degrees of design freedom for
illumination and lumination, as well. For example, lumination in streets and roads can be used to make
traffic safer. Shop and retail LED lumination can be customized to the (changing) ambient conditions
or specific company colors in new ways.
Besides our mains connected LED solutions, NXP Semiconductors offers a wide range of solutions if
controllability is key in the design. These solutions can be used in combination or to directly connect
to the LEDs to statically or dynamically control the brightness, color or setting. Fast Mode Plus (FM+)
is one of the many innovations used to make these parts address specific requirements for LED
systems, such as longer connections between LED sub-systems. New lighting applications that save
energy can be easy to design, as well! For more information, see www.nxp.com/i2c/
