Background
Daehan Special Metal Co., Ltd. was established
in 1973 in the 3rd industrial complex of Taegu,
South Korea by a small number of engineers.
They now employ 180 people and have an
annual capacity of approximately 24,000 tons.
Their customers include Hyundai-Kia Motors,
Daewoo Heavy Industries, Hyundai, Heavy
Industries and Ssangyong Motors.
Daehan is a strong believer in keeping their facilities updated and following
established quality control guidelines. Previously, Daehan had used locally
made sand mixers and a sand cooler which were relatively inexpensive but not
very effective at controlling green sand quality. In early 2003, Daehan had
decided to install a second automatic molding line. In order to accommodate
the increased sand demand from two molding machines and the strict sand
quality requirements from the Disamatic® 2110 MK3 vertically parted molding
machine, Daehan started to look for sand preparation equipment from a world
class manufacturer. They were looking for not just a sand mixer, but a
complete sand preparation solution for their foundry expansion.

Daehan reviewed models from several suppliers whose names are well
established in the worldwide foundry industry. Their final choice was to go with
a Simpson sand preparation system solution, including a Model MC-100
Simpson Multi-Cooler®, a Model 100B-250 B&P Speedmullor®, a Model 18Mk22552 Hartley® Compactability Controller with Bond Determinator, a Model
90Mk2-5 Hartley Pneumatic Bond System and a Model 2-Cell Simpson ProClaim®. According to Mr. Jae-ug Byun, Vice President of Daehan, their final
decision was based on the following criteria:

Optimal performance of any sand plant can best be achieved when the
variations in return, or shakeout, sand can be eliminated. The Simpson MultiCooler is a critical element to the optimal performance of the sand preparation
system. The ability of the Simpson Multi-Cooler to cool, pre-moisten and premix the return sand will greatly assist the high intensity batch mullers in
maximizing their performance. To meet Daehan’s sand cooling needs the
Model MC-100 Simpson Multi-Cooler was selected.
For sand mulling, Daehan selected one (1) Model 100 B&P Speedmullor with a
Hartley Model 18Mk2/2552 Bond Determinator. The 18Mk2/2552 automatically
controls the mulling operation from charging the weigh batch hopper through
delivering sand to the Disamatic with bond additions being automatically
calculated and adjusted by testing compactability, green compressive strength
and moisture. The Hartley 90 Mk2-5 Bond Injection System automatically
transports and injects the calculated bond addition directly into the side of the
Speedmullor. This system provides the full advantages of high intensity, high
speed batch mulling combined with the automation and control of the advanced
Hartley compactability control system.

of the Model 2PC Simpson Pro-Claim pneumatic sand reclamation unit. Daehan
bypasses a percentage of their used foundry sand from the shake-out and
processes it through the Pro-Claim removing used binder and contaminants
from the individual sand grains. This reclaimed sand is reintroduced into the
sand system as a replacement for new sand.
The benefit is derived from
reducing the quantity of new sand Daehan purchases and the subsequent
reduction in the quantity of sand be sent to the land fill.
