Dear SCIS Parents and Friends, Welcome to the 2016-­‐2017 school year at the Pudong Campus of the Shanghai Community International School. We’re thrilled to welcome you to our community. Our first campus opened its doors in 2002 and since that time we have experienced phenomenal success. We are a dynamic international community of teachers, students, and parents who come together in state-­‐
of-­‐the-­‐art facilities with a shared vision of holistic student-­‐education. Our mission has propelled us to the forefront of education in Shanghai. This year, we’re excited to be adding our authorization visits for the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs for the Middle Years (MYP) and Primary Years (PYP). The IB is a world-­‐class academic program aimed at rigorous critical thinking and global citizenship. But at SCIS, we aim to be more than the IB. Your child will experience an academically rigorous, college-­‐preparatory program balanced against our desire to foster students’ artistic, athletic, and global citizenship endeavors; our nurturing community is focused on each individual to provide opportunities for student success. SCIS is and always has been a school where community is valued. Throughout the inevitable changes in Shanghai, we have kept a core belief that our school is an intimate place where each student is nurtured and challenged. Our distinctive setting in this cosmopolitan city allows our students to interact with over forty nationalities, creating an exceptional environment for growth, understanding and personal development. Our school is the community-­‐building environment which fosters these relationships. It is this unique combination of internationalism, strong academics, with an emphasis on holistic development through a personalized approach that makes us special. I am truly excited to be returning to SCIS Pudong to serve the community in my role as Head of School. My wife Laurie and I worked at SCIS for six years, and we are returning to Shanghai after spending the last eight years in Budapest Hungary. I am also joined by my three daughters who were all educated as SCIS Dragons and are excited to return to Shanghai and connect with the special people and dynamic energy that we associate with SCIS. To all of the new families joining SCIS, on behalf of the entire faculty, I offer you a warm welcome. The information in this packet will help you prepare for a successful school year. We look forward to your active involvement in your child’s education. School Uniforms All SCIS students are required to wear a school uniform. One set of the school uniform is included with the payment of tuition and these starter packs can be collected once you are enrolled. Additional uniform pieces may be purchased from the school offices. To the greatest degree possible, we ask that parents ensure that their child is in full uniform from the first day of school. You will find additional information about Uniform Policy in the Student-­‐Parent Handbook, always available online at pd.scis-­‐his.net. Please note that jeans are not allowed as part of the uniform. SCIS ID Cards All staff and faculty are required to wear their ID cards while on campus. Upper School students are required to present their ID cards when checking out materials, printing, or using library resources. All parents will need to present an ID card when entering the campus. We greatly appreciate your respect and support of our security measure as we work to ensure the safest possible learning environment for your children. Staffing, Classroom and Teacher Assignments SCIS employs a faculty of professional educators who are committed to both the mission of SCIS as well as to their profession. As professional educators, each has their own experiences and academic and professional background that we feel made them excellent additions to our faculty. Currently, our teaching faculty is made up of teachers from 9 nations, although most have professional training from North America, the U.K., or the Southern Hemisphere nations of South Africa and New Zealand. Laptops for Grades 6 – 12 Students SCIS has a highly successful One-­‐to-­‐One laptop program at the Upper School for students in grades 6 – 12. Apple MacBook computers are loaned to students to be utilized in classes throughout the school year. An onsite Apple Sales and Service Center is provided in the Upper School for purchasing accessories, as well as for any necessary related servicing that might be required. SCIS computers for student use are issued soon after the beginning of the school year. Students in grades 10-­‐12 will be receiving new Macbook Airs for the 2016-­‐2017 school year. All students and parents will be required to read our school technology usage agreement. Communication is the Key to Success At SCIS, we know one of the strong points of a great school is effective, quality communication between the school and your home. Indeed, Effective Communication is a critical area of focus at SCIS. School Transportation The option of accessing school transportation for your child is provided within tuition for all students. If you have applied for transportation service; you will receive notification from our transportation department detailing your child’s bus and pickup site location. Please note that if you have registered for school but did not confirm a home pickup address with our Admissions Department at the time of enrollment, you should provide your home address to our Transportation Department as soon as possible. Due to new regulations imposed by the Shanghai Transportation Commission, schools in Shanghai will need up to one semester to apply for a permit to add new buses, bus routes and/or stops. Any changes or additions made now may not serviced until the start of 2nd semester in January 2017. Please contact our transportation coordinator, Mr. Stu Ren, with any questions: sren@scis-­‐china.org Food Service Our food service provider supplies a daily menu of hot and cold offerings in the cafeteria. All food is prepared and cooked on campus. In addition, the upper school operated café will also sell snacks and drinks. A weekly menu, along with nutritional information, can always be found at pd.scis-­‐his.net.
