GE Multilin Relays Help Bring More Electrical Power To Turkey
Relays chosen for new substation will tie new 770 MW power plant to grid
December 19, 2002 – Markham, Ontario – The Turkish Electrical Transmission Company
(TEAS) is using digital protection relays from
GE Multilin for the Temelli substation, the main
tie between their new 770 MW Baymina power
plant and the national grid. This major project,
named “ITM-21”, is designed to increase the
availability of electrical power to meet the
country’s
growing
demand.
The
Temelli
substation is a crucial link that will ensure the
stability and reliability of this new electrical
power supply.
The Temelli substation will be the main tie between
the new 770 MW Baymina power plant and the grid
AVRASYA Energy Co., the main contractor responsible for the construction of the Temelli
substation, selected EKO Sinerji, a local distributor and Value Added Reseller for GE Multilin, to
help complete this major project. EKO Sinerji will supply an engineered solution, complete with
protection and control panels for the substation.
The Temelli substation, located in Ankara, will feature a combination of GE Multilin’s powerful
digital relays for protection and control of transmission lines, busbars and transformers. The
relays being installed include: UR D60 line distance protection, BUS busbar protection, DTP
transformer protection, MIN directional ground protection, DBF breaker failure protection, SMOR
feeder management, MIF feeder protection, MLJ synchronizing and MIV voltage protection. The
relays in the substation will ensure a reliable and stable flow of electrical power from the Baymina
power plant to the 380 kV EHV national grid.
Ali Osman Turkyilmaz, Vice President for AVRASYA Enerji Co., stated that, “This project will
enable the connection of a large power plant to the national grid, making it a very important
undertaking for us and TEAS. Accurate performance of the protection relays, as well as their
simplicity in programming, testing and commissioning is essential for the execution of the overall

project. These factors, combined with the high quality of customer service we experienced with
previous projects, have been the driving force behind choosing GE Multilin and EKO Sinerji.”
Mehmet Imeryuz, Sales Manager for GE Multilin, commented that, “Customers prefer GE Multilin
protection and control relays due to their proven field operations record for substations and their
advanced protection characteristics. Additionally, their flexibility and programmability facilitate
adaptation to existing schemes and simplify coordination with other relays.”
