As our cover story conveys, this latest evolution in radiation therapy provides distinct clinical and patient advantages found in no other technology in medicine today. There are only two of these systems in the country — and one of them is at our Lynn Cancer Institute. You will also read that the Hospital has earned yet another national accolade for its quality of care. The National Research Corporation has awarded us their coveted Consumer Choice Award for 2015–2016. We are the only hospital in Palm Beach County to earn such a distinction. I would also draw your attention to the article on our Resident Physician Community Partnership Program. As the primary teaching site for Internal Medicine Residents from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, we pride ourselves on our transformation from a capable community hospital to a true academic medical center. Yet our commitment transcends that of simply training tomorrow’s clinicians. The Partnership Program is a unique initiative designed to acclimate these young doctors and their families to our region. I invite you to learn more about it and consider becoming involved. Other articles of interest will give you insights into the advances we are making in such areas as valvular disease and breast health. You’ll also find useful information on our relationship with Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System), our growing constellation of outpatient facilities and a list of our BocaCare® primary care physicians and specialists. By any measure, 2015 was very special for Boca Raton Regional Hospital. I have no doubt that 2016 will again be a banner year and that we will continue to enhance our position as one of the premier providers of healthcare in the state of Florida. Sincerely, Jerry J. Fedele President & CEO 2 | M A K I N G R O U N D S | Winter 2016 The Stroke Center at Boca Raton Regional Hospital offers education and supportive information for those who have experienced a stroke, as well as for their caregivers. Boca Regional Garners Yet Another National Accolade Boca Raton Regional Hospital has been cited as a 2015–2016 Consumer Choice Award recipient by the National Research Corporation (NRC). The annual accolade identifies hospitals across the United States that healthcare consumers choose as having the highest quality and image. Boca Regional now joins such prestigious institutions as the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts General Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Hospital in this year’s listings, and is the only provider in Palm Beach County to receive the distinction. Award recipients are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings in NRC’s Market Insights, the largest online consumer healthcare survey in the country. The survey includes more than 300,000 households in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia. Hospitals named by consumers are ranked by their Core Based Statistical Areas as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau. “We are most gratified to receive this significant, third-party distinction,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO at Boca Regional. “It adds to our growing list of national accolades such as U.S. News & World Report’s listing of us as a Top Ranked Regional Hospital. We are very proud to see our quality recognized in such outstanding fashion.” For more information, or a complete list of Boca Regional’s awards and accolades, visit www.brrh.com/accolades. Healthcare Away From Home Boca Raton Regional Hospital has joined with Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System) to encourage New York area residents with second homes in or near Boca Raton to enroll in Boca HealthLink Exchange, a program that enables healthcare providers to share medical records of patients served by Northwell and Boca Regional. The service ensures that Northwell patients who travel south during the winter will experience the same level of world-class patient care and customer service in Florida. Patients who enroll in Boca HealthLink Exchange and pre-authorize the sharing of records can utilize a number of services from both organizations. For more information, go to www.NY2Boca.com. Patients can enroll by calling 1.844.NY2.BOCA (692.2622). Boca Raton Regional Hospital | 3 Boca Raton Regional Hospital and GE Healthcare Join Forces to Tackle Breast Cancer The Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital has added the GE Healthcare Invenia™ Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) to their spectrum of breast imaging capabilities. The supplemental screening option provides extraordinary image performance, enhanced breast coverage and excellent detection for patients with all types of breast tissue. Research has shown that utilizing the same breast health imaging technology for every woman is no longer optimum. Differences in breast tissue require a variety of tools to maximize effectiveness and efficiency in screening mammography. ABUS is the only ultrasound device to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an adjunct technology that can be used in conjunction with mammography for breast cancer screening in asymptomatic women with dense breast tissue. The Institute’s physicians believe that using ABUS can help improve cancer detection by nearly 55 percent in patients with dense breasts. Common among women, dense breasts have more fibroglandular tissue than fatty tissue. Though cancer is more likely to develop in dense breasts, mammography may offer limited visibility. “There is a dramatic paradigm shift in the approach to screening mammography that now recognizes the difference in women’s breast tissue and the clinical implications of those differences,” said Kathy Schilling, MD, Medical Director of the Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. “The addition of ABUS now gives our Women’s Institute every tool possible to customize our screening protocols per a woman’s specific needs and detect breast cancer at its earliest and most curable stage.” To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 561.955.4HER (955.4437). Boca Raton Regional Hospital | 5 Boca Regional Introduces Fern F. Steinfeld Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Center Boca Raton Regional Hospital has established the Fern F. Steinfeld Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement Center. This latest component of the Hospital’s Christine E. Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute provides a highly therapeutic treatment option for patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis and who are considered a high risk for standard valve replacement surgery. Aortic valve stenosis is a type of heart disease in which the valve that regulates blood flow from the heart is narrowed and prevented from opening fully. Regretfully, many of these patients are of advanced age or have coexisting health issues that disqualify them for traditional valve replacement. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR is a minimally invasive surgical 6 | M A K I N G R O U N D S | Winter 2016 technique that greatly reduces the procedural risk for these individuals. TAVR delivers the artificial replacement valve through a catheter. Patients usually experience immediate benefit in terms of improved blood circulation. Because the valve replacement is done via minimally invasive technique, most patients can expect a much faster recovery period than they would from the conventional open-heart procedure. The Center is led by Carlos A. Velez, MD, FACC, FSCAI, who serves as Director of Structural Heart Disease Interventions at the Christine E. Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute. Dr. Velez is a specialist in TAVR and has served on the faculty of some of the nation’s most prestigious heart programs including those at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. “Dr. Velez brings impeccable credentials and experience to our TAVR Center,” said Richard Cartledge, MD, FACS and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “We, along with our patients, are most fortunate to have a clinician of his caliber heading this most important addition to our capabilities at the Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute.” For more information on Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement and other heart procedures, call 561.955.4282. Toledo Rockets Visit Boca Raton Regional Hospital Transcending the Training of Tomorrow's Clinicians T H E R E S I D E N T P H Y S I C I A N C O M M U N I T Y PA R T N E R S H I P When Boca Raton Regional Hospital opened its doors to the first class of Internal Medicine Residents from Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine in July of 2014, the welcoming extended well beyond the halls of the Hospital. Dozens of local civicminded individuals joined together to create The Resident Physician Community Partnership, a unique program providing social support and mentorship to our medical residents and their families. Graduate Medical Education is a demanding experience for residents. Many of these young men and women come to Boca Raton, where they and their families find themselves in unfamiliar surroundings. This factor, coupled with their arduous schedule and the responsibilities of a residency, can be especially burdensome. The Partnership was designed to provide assistance to residents at Boca Regional and help them acclimate to life in South Florida. Amid increasing demand for medical care in our region, especially primary care, The Partnership aims to foster an environment of support that goes beyond the residents’ training and helps to create and nurture a special relationship that can have a positive influence on their decision as to where they will ultimately choose to care for patients. The Partnership connects a diverse group of community leaders and professionals to Boca Regional’s medical residents and maintains an ongoing relationship with them. In the final analysis, The Partnership is truly a win-win for everyone involved. The community has come forward to support these talented physicians and the residents have embraced and benefitted from this extraordinary endeavor. For more information about The Partnership, please contact theresidencyproject@gmail.com. As part of the festivities surrounding this year’s Marmot Boca Raton Bowl, players and Head Coach Jason Candle from the Toledo Rockets visited Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Toppel Family Place. There they met our new moms and dads, saw newborns in the nursery and learned about the maternity unit from our doctors, nurses and staff. On hand to welcome these athletes and exceptional young men was Boca Regional President and CEO, Jerry Fedele. Everyone enjoyed our time with the Rockets…and 2015 Marmot Boca Raton Bowl champs. Boca Raton Regional Hospital | 7 IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER, this is a tumor’s worst enemy Boca Raton Regional Hospital Becomes Only Second Site in U.S. to Offer New Radiation Oncology Technology Offering new hope to patients with tumors that were once considered untreatable with surgery or conventional radiation therapy, the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute (LCI) at Boca Raton Regional Hospital is now utilizing the Accuray CyberKnife® M6™ System with InCise2 technology. Boca Regional now joins the renowned Hillman Cancer Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as the only two oncology programs in the country to offer this specific therapy. Unlike other forms of radiosurgery, this latest generation of the CyberKnife offers an unprecedented ability to precisely target tumors while sparing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. 8 | M A K I N G R O U N D S | Winter 2016 What makes this version of the CyberKnife so unique — and so effective — is its ability to continuously track and attack the tumor as it shifts during therapy due to patient movement or respiration. “The InCise2 technology uses what is called a Multileaf Collimator and 3D robotic navigation which allow us to sculpt and re-sculpt the field of radiation we are delivering throughout the procedure and automatically correct for any tumor movement,” said Tim Williams, MD, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at LCI. “With other systems, when the tumor moves you have to stop the radiation, wait for the mass to return to its original position, and then restart the therapy.” This combination of exquisite accuracy and the ability to adjust to tumor motion allows the radiation therapy team to carry out the procedure with the highest level of precision. The System’s advanced maneuverability also offers complete access and coverage for any tumor size or shape, even in anatomically difficult areas. In turn, these capabilities enable the delivery of higher radiation doses resulting in a reduced number of total treatments and a reduction in the individual treatment time from 60 minutes or more with prior versions of the CyberKnife to less than 30 minutes with the M6 InCise2 technology. Therapy is usually completed in one to five days versus weeks with more conventional radiation systems. “This generation of CyberKnife is truly the state-of-the-art in radiation therapy,” commented Dr. Williams. “In addition to its tremendous efficacy, the procedure requires no anesthesia, no recovery time, no overnight hospital stay and no restrictive positioning devices that are used in other technologies. As you can imagine, these are all tremendous patient and family satisfiers.” Dr. Williams noted that the CyberKnife at LCI is presently being used to treat malignant and non-malignant tumors of the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas, kidney, bone and eye. Even if patients have already undergone radiation, surgery or chemotherapy — or are currently undergoing treatment — they still may be candidates for the CyberKnife system and should consult their physician. It is covered by most insurance plans. “CyberKnife now completes a spectrum of therapies at the Lynn Cancer Institute that is among the most sophisticated in the country,” commented Dr. Williams. “Patients in the region should feel most confident in these capabilities and the benefits we can afford them in their treatment needs.” For more information about Lynn Cancer Institute's CyberKnife® M6™ System with InCise2 technology, call 561.955.4000.
