Mount Royal’s Vision: Creating exceptional learning experiences for a world of possibilities
Mount Royal prepares students for a world of possibilities, and the Mount Royal College Foundation plays a
pivotal role in support of Mount Royal’s vision. We are proud to advance this vision by cultivating relationships
with the community and raising funds for Mount Royal’s initiatives.
The Foundation works in collaboration with you, our donors, to champion Mount Royal’s goals in support of our
students. Together we have formed a long-term and inspired partnership. Our momentum continues, and we
thank you for your enduring interest in our shared success.
Thank you to
Our Donors
Each year, we are pleased to have an opportunity to express our gratitude to our
donors, whether you are making a gift to Mount Royal for the first time or have been
supporting us for many years. This report highlights some of the remarkable ways
that our donors, whether they are alumni, individuals, corporations or foundations, are
helping to create exceptional learning experiences for Mount Royal students.
The past year has been filled with great accomplishments, and we have the generosity
of our donors to thank for many of these. For example, the students enrolled in
Mount Royal’s first baccalaureate degree – the Bachelor of Nursing – are receiving the
financial support they need through scholarships such as the one created by John and
May Lockhart.
our donors. Please take the time to read the stories that celebrate the impact of several
different types of gifts made to Mount Royal this past year.
On behalf of the Mount Royal community we thank you for your support. We look
forward to sharing more stories about the impact that your donations are having on
the lives of our students and faculty, and the many successes you help us achieve.
Sincerely,
A generous gift from Imperial Oil Foundation has enabled the Iniskim Centre to
develop the Medicine Trail program, which brings an Aboriginal elder to campus
to mentor students and provide cultural training to the Mount Royal community.
Long-term contributions from the Calgary Flames Foundation for Life and the
Cougar Booster Club reward students for academic excellence, enable them to
participate in championship athletics and build pride amongst our student athletes.
We unveiled Ross Glen Hall at the grand opening of the Centre for Continuous
Learning in recognition of the many years of support received from Ross Glen and
RGO Office Products Partnership. We realize just how fortunate we are to have such
loyal friends as Bev and Gord Tallman. Gord retired from the Board of Directors
after six years of dedicated service, yet he continues to be Mount Royal’s greatest
advocate in our community.
We have received too many gifts to mention within these stories, though this does not
diminish what has been made possible through the generous support of each one of

With the March 2007 announcement
of our new Bachelor of Nursing degree program, Mount Royal laid the groundwork
for our exciting evolution as we aspire to become a distinctive baccalaureate
institution. Our first university-level degree affirms our reputation for exceptional
nursing education, as well as helping to meet increasing demand for nursing
professionals in Calgary and beyond.
John and May Lockhart recognize the value in supporting nursing education and
helping students toward a fulfilling career in the community. They recently established
the Lella (Dole) Lockhart Memorial Award in Nursing—matched on a two-to-one
basis by Alberta’s Access to the Future Renaissance Fund grant—which was one of
the first awards created for the new degree program.
“We wanted to set up an award for students who plan to work in community health
because my mother worked with Alberta’s first rural health unit in 1931,” says John.
His mother, Lella (Dole) Lockhart, grew up in southern Alberta and trained at the
Holy Cross Hospital Nurses Training School in 1925 before being expelled for cutting
her hair short. She completed her studies in the United States and returned to Calgary
as a registered nurse soon afterwards.
“Both our mothers had a big influence on us,” says May, whose own mother was a
schoolteacher. “Their strength and their commitment to our education made such a
difference in our lives. And our philosophy is that education opens up your horizons,
that it’s more than just about getting a job.”
The Lockharts, former commercial livestock producers, have also established
memorial funds at the University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge and the Alberta
Children’s Hospital. They say that they are giving back to the community because they
were often helped along the way by many people, sometimes even by strangers.
“…our philosophy is that education opens up your
horizons, that it’s more than just about getting a job.”
“In 1970, I started a master’s program at the University of British Columbia, and
money was tight,” says John, married and a father of two young children at the time.
“Completely unexpectedly, the dean of graduate studies gave me a personal cheque
for $1,000—and he didn’t know me from anybody—it was just a bit of bridge
financing to get me through. He did that for many people, making a practice of
assisting students in need.”
May adds, “While we’re not in the same league as a corporation, we know that our
donations can affect one life at a time. It’s our way of saying to students, ‘We’ve been
there. We know what it’s like, and there’s someone out here who is interested in your
education.’ ”
And there is no doubt that Mount Royal’s Nursing graduates will be in high demand
within the city, the province and across the country.
“According to reports from Alberta Health & Wellness, the health regions and our
professional bodies, if every graduate from our program began working in Alberta,
we’d still be short of nurses in the province,” says Pam Nordstrom, director of the
School of Nursing.
The program, which also features a focus on health promotion, has been identified by
the Campus Alberta Quality Council and the Nursing Education Program Approval
Board as an exceptionally conceived, high-quality degree.
“The program focuses on preparing registered nurses for the future workforce, where
they will need to be capable of working on interdisciplinary teams, making critical
judgments about population health as well as individual health and illness, and also
delivering nursing care in a vast number of settings, from acute care to community
work,” says Nordstrom.
The Bachelor of Nursing degree draws on the legacy of more than 40 years of
nursing training offered at Mount Royal. “It’s the first time we’ve offered a degree
independently of other institutions,” Nordstrom says, adding that the current
collaborative degree with Athabasca University will be phased out by 2011.

Creating a scholarship or bursary at Mount Royal
Student awards are an excellent way to support student
success in a very practical and meaningful way. At Mount
Royal, scholarships are given to students on the basis of
academic achievement, and bursaries are distributed based on
financial need. Many families have also chosen to celebrate
the memory of a loved one through the creation of a
memorial scholarship or bursary.
Annual awards can be created for a one-time or yearly gift
pledged over a period of three to five years. Endowment
awards can be created for a minimum donation of $20,000,
the earnings of which provide for an award each year. The
specific eligibility criteria for each scholarship or bursary will
be created with our donor’s intentions in mind.
Please call the Mount Royal College Foundation office at
(403) 440-7700 to find out how you can establish a unique
scholarship or bursary, and help to create a world of
possibilities for our students.

The Iniskim Centre offers
programs and services to
students, staff and faculty
at Mount Royal. These
services include academic
programming, personal and
spiritual advising, cultural
teaching, on-campus housing,
program development,
funding assistance, advocacy
and relationship-building
among communities. The
Centre serves as a base to
attract Aboriginal students to
Mount Royal, and provides
academic services to enhance
retention for successful
completion of their programs.
There are approximately
500 self-declared Aboriginal
students currently attending
Mount Royal.
Sharing Successes
Canada’s Aboriginal people represent
the fastest growing and most youthful demographic in Canada. However, Aboriginals
are severely underrepresented in post-secondary education—and first-year students of
Aboriginal descent are at the greatest risk of dropping out of school.
Monica Samper, president of the Imperial Oil Foundation, sees unlimited potential
in the Centre. “We have a long-standing connection with Aboriginal communities in
Alberta and Ontario, and we are committed to encouraging Aboriginal youth to stay
in school while giving them support that fits with their traditional values.
To reverse the statistics, Mount Royal opened the doors of the new Iniskim Centre in
March 2007. Together with support from local Aboriginal communities, the Centre
provides services and resources to help students as they pursue their academic studies.
“We’re very excited to work with Mount Royal. The ultimate goal is to help support
Canada’s economy. If we want to continue being a leader in a global economy, we
have to seriously look at the education of our Aboriginal youth. They are the fastest
growing young population in Canada, and they are a pool of talent that will need to
be tapped.”
“It’s a difficult transition, especially for those students from small Aboriginal
communities who have a very different world view,” says Jolain Foster, director of the
Iniskim Centre. “You go from being part of a close-knit community to being all alone.
There are identity challenges and, of course, financial challenges. Plus, there are a lot
of social issues—such as suicide, illness and alcoholism—things that you have to deal
with back home. It’s a real challenge to complete that first year.”
Beyond a founding donation to establish the Medicine Trail program, the Imperial Oil
Foundation has also had an impact on the leadership of the Iniskim Centre. Imperial
Oil’s Aboriginal relations manager volunteers on the Centre’s advisory committee,
helping to shape its priorities and goals.
To further support students, the Iniskim Centre has launched the Medicine Trail
program, funded through a three-year commitment by the Imperial Oil Foundation.
The program connects students with an elder who can provide cultural training as
well as one-on-one mentoring. The Medicine Trail coordinator then connects students
with counsellors in the EnCana Wellness Centre on campus.
“Our students are dealing with difficult crises every day, and it is essential that we
give them access to the right kind of guidance,” says Foster. “With funding from
the Imperial Oil Foundation, we have been able to secure Marvin Fox, a highly
respected Blackfoot elder, who also has a Bachelor of Education, to be a mentor
to the students.”
The Imperial Oil Foundation also recently gave Foster the opportunity to participate
in a Global Women in Management course, bringing together women in leadership
roles from around the world for intensive training in Washington D.C. this past
summer, as well as providing ongoing one-on-one coaching for the upcoming year.
“They really care,” Jolain Foster says of the Imperial Oil Foundation. “For them, it’s
about building relationships, building capacity and giving back.”

Cougar athletes are receiving financial relief
thanks to recent donations from the Cougar Booster Club and the Calgary Flames
Foundation.
The Cougar Booster Club, whose mission over the past 25 years has been to raise
funds for Cougar Athletics, gave approximately $150,000 toward scholarships for
student athletes this past summer.
“As a result of this generous donation, we have been able to establish six new
scholarships for teams that previously had none,” says Karla Karch, manager of
Cougar Athletics. “We’ve created new endowed scholarships in badminton, women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s volleyball. In addition,
we were able to top up some existing endowment scholarships.”
Karch adds that, by the end of 2008, each Cougar team will have at least $30,000
in endowed scholarships—due, in large part, to the support of the Booster Club.
Established in 1982 by the late Al Bohonus (former athletics director) and alumnus
Tim Dupuis, the Cougar Booster Club holds numerous fundraisers, including
casinos and golf tournaments, bringing together Cougar supporters, student
athletes and the public.
“Just looking at the commitment student athletes make to pursue their sport, plus
the costs of going to school, you realize that they need help to offset expenses,” says
Wayne Andrews, president of the Booster Club. “And I think that supporting these
athletes ultimately raises Mount Royal’s profile in the community. Student athletes are
great ambassadors.”
Karch says without the support of the Cougar Booster Club, Mount Royal’s Athletics
program would not be as successful. “In addition to academic opportunities, worldclass facilities and dedicated coaches, we attract top student athletes because of the
scholarships we offer,” she says.
Beyond scholarships, Cougar Athletics also provides funding for necessary team
expenses, non-conference travel and extra equipment for both the men’s and women’s
hockey teams, thanks to ongoing donations from the Calgary Flames Foundation
for Life.
“From the outset, the mandate of the Calgary Flames has always been to be as
supportive of the community as it could possibly be—we were designed to be a
community team,” says Ken King, president and CEO of the Calgary Flames.
According to King, the Flames Foundation for Life deals with thousands of requests
for support each year, but the Cougar hockey teams stand out in their quality. “We
think that the Cougar hockey program is excellent, and we feel that both professional
and amateur sports have a galvanizing role for people of disparate backgrounds,” he
adds. “When strangers high-five each other at a hockey game, it’s special. Hockey can
provide many levels of inspiration for all sorts of people, whether they’re young, old,
healthy or sick.” With continual support totaling nearly $100,000 from the Flames
Foundation, Cougar hockey players can focus on their training and academics, rather
than worrying about raising extra funds for travel.
“I strongly believe that what we offer our student athletes in terms of academics,
facilities, coaching and financial support is on par with some of the best institutions
in Canada,” Karch says. “And as we move forward, the ongoing support of
organizations such as the Booster Club and the Calgary Flames will help us continue
our tradition of excellence.”

Mount Royal is proud of its 10 Cougar teams, comprised of
men’s and women’s teams in basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball,
badminton and golf. With these teams, Cougar Athletics is
achieving its primary goals of pursuing academic success and
winning championships: 96 per cent of student-athletes are
academically successful and Cougar teams regularly win 50 per
cent of their respective provincial titles.
Cougar Athletics is helping student-athletes develop personal and
career skills, including leadership, teamwork, planning, flexibility
and problem solving, skills that will bring our students success
now, and in all of their future endeavours.

Sharing Successes
Gord and Bev Tallman contribute to
Mount Royal’s success in many ways
When Gord and Bev Tallman first
began attending monthly chairman’s dinners at Mount Royal College in the 1980s,
they never expected they would eventually play such an important role in the success
of the institution—or such a significant role in the lives of single parents pursuing a
post-secondary education.
From 2001–2003, Gord Tallman helped to lead Mount Royal’s Bright Minds, Bright
Futures fundraising campaign as co-chair, a campaign that generated more than $25
million in new funding for programs and students.
“The thing that was most important to me was building bridges with the donors,”
says the former senior vice-president, prairies region of the Royal Bank of Canada.
“One of the most gratifying things for me during the campaign was the time we
called on one donor who hadn’t planned to donate.
“But during our visit, the CEO of the organization asked if they had ever hired any
students from Mount Royal. Well, they had recently hired someone from the Applied
Communications program, and the CEO noted that he hadn’t had to rewrite one
press release since the Mount Royal graduate had started!”
After the campaign, Tallman joined the Mount Royal College Foundation Board
of Directors, serving on various committees and then chairing the Board until his
retirement in June 2007. “I got a lot of personal satisfaction out of my involvement
with Mount Royal,” he adds. “It was one of the ways I found we could give back
to the city.”
parent in any program. “Our son passed away from cancer, leaving behind a widow
who was still in school. And long before that, my own father had passed away
when I was just eight years old,” Gord Tallman says. “We realized the importance of
helping single parents.”
Valerie Pierce is just one of many students who have benefited from the Tallmans’
generosity. Shortly before receiving the David G. Tallman Memorial Scholarship in
2006, Pierce had been struggling financially.
“The week before I found out about the award, I had been busy at school 16 hours
a day,” says the 25-year-old, who graduated with a Theatre Arts diploma this past
June. “I had taken my young son out in the morning for a special hot-chocolate-andmuffin date.
“But I realized I only had enough to buy him hot chocolate. I felt heartbroken, having
to tell my son that mommy couldn’t afford a muffin.”
For Pierce, widowed at age 21, the memorial scholarship reaffirmed that she could
achieve her educational goals, despite personal hardships.
“It made me feel like there had been others who had gone through similar problems.
It really changed my life.”
The Tallmans’ contributions to Mount Royal have extended beyond Gord
Tallman’s leadership role.
Pierce says that having the chance to meet and thank Gord personally also made an
impact on her. “It was amazing. We talked about our stories first, then we talked about
how society deals with people who have lost a loved one. So many people don’t know
what to do—they kind of just back off. But memorial scholarships allow people to
deal with their grief and show society that it’s okay to talk about it, to honour the
loved one’s life.”
After the death of their son in 2001, Gord and Bev established the David G. Tallman
Memorial Scholarship to honour both David and his wife, who was attending Mount
Royal at the time. Each year, the scholarship assists a third- or fourth-year single
“Our son would be proud that we’ve been able to help people,” Tallman adds.
“It’s very, very gratifying to be able to make a difference in a person’s life with a
scholarship. People need a little hope and a little help sometimes.”

Mount Royal’s Fundraising Priorities:
2006-2007
Over the course of almost 100 years of education, Mount Royal has clearly identified
its niche as a renowned learning institution. Today, students, industry, community
members and donors see the value that Mount Royal provides with its unique studentcentred and teaching-focused approach to education.
In 2006-2007, we focused our fundraising efforts on four key priorities in support
of our vision to provide exceptional learning experiences for our students. We
seek out partners in our community who share an interest in these specific giving
opportunities, and together, create a world of possibilities for Mount Royal’s students.
Scholarships and Bursaries: A Legacy of Achievement
Mount Royal seeks to ensure that no one accepted into a program is prevented from
completing their degree due to lack of financial resources. Further, Mount Royal’s
dream is to have every student who needs financial aid, receive it, so that when
they graduate, they can join the working world free from debt and armed with the
confidence and abilities gained from a totally focused learning experience.
Gifts to scholarships and bursaries, such as the donation from John and May Lockhart
featured on page two, provide tangible rewards for a job well done.
Institutes: Innovation through Collaboration
Mount Royal’s Institutes support and promote initiatives requiring interdisciplinary
work, enabling strategic alliances between Mount Royal and industry. To achieve
their goals, Institutes rely on internal experts – faculty, staff, students and contractors
representing various disciplines – as well as a diverse range of external partners, all
with unique skills and the desire to pursue answers.
Endowed Chairs and Executives in Residence:
Inspiring Academic Excellence
Mount Royal recognizes immense value in bringing renowned academics and
accomplished professionals into our classrooms. Endowed Chairs and Executives in
Residence furnish direct and powerful opportunities for collaboration with faculty and
students.
The Bissett School of Business is experiencing first-hand the benefits of this external
expertise with their newest Executive-in-Residence Stephen Kenny, a position made
possible through a generous gift from David Bissett.
Cougar Athletics: Scoring High for Almost a Century
Cougar Athletics is achieving its primary goals of pursuing academic success and
winning championships: 96 per cent of Mount Royal student-athletes are academically
successful and Cougar teams regularly win 50 per cent of their respective provincial
titles. As Mount Royal aspires to become a distinctive baccalaureate institution, our
Mount Royal Cougars will be eligible to advance and compete within the Canada West
University Athletic Association (CWUAA), the highest level of collegiate athletic
competition in Canada.
Long-term contributors such as the Flames Foundation for Life and the Cougar
Booster Club, both featured on page six, recognize the exceptional importance of
financial support for our student athletes.
The Integrative Health Institute has blossomed through continued support from
corporations such as EnCana and individuals such as N. Murray Edwards.
