The right rack for your application
Today’s enclosures go well beyond simple cabinets that
solely house servers; essentially they are mini data
centres that reside within the company’s physical data
centre. In an effort to regain control of increased energy
costs to run the company’s data centre, IT managers and
their colleagues need to consider the IT rack as an integral
and necessary component of the airflow plenum design.
Today’s data centre
While legacy data centre design
factors are still relevant, the
ability to use the rack as a
plenum provides IT managers
with a new weapon in their
arsenal. Each rack can be
designed and implemented
as an isolated environment.
Managers now have the
freedom to set the airflow
requirements of individual
racks as they relate to the
larger plenum system.
Eaton´s rack hygiene
can improve PUE and
reduce energy costs.
Rack hygiene
The concept of rack hygiene
is a term that encompasses
the identification, analysis
and repair of hot air leakage
areas and cold air bypass
routes within and around
individual data centre racks.
Rack hygiene is a new term
used to describe the care
in which the rack envelope
is designed, controlled and
maintained. The rack envelope
consists of the entire volume
of space from the floor to top
4
of the rack itself, and perhaps
a measurement of rise above
the floor to include empty
space above the rack that
would rise to the ‘heat deck’.
It is the responsibility of the
data centre professional to
find solutions that provide an
impenetrable barrier around
the front plane of the rack
in a front-to-back dominated
airflow environment. The
tighter the seal provided
around the front of the rack,
the closer one can come to
achieving full rack hygiene.
Scalable design
Eaton’s enclosure systems are
extremely flexible, platforms
available. Featuring a unique
building-block design, that
can easily be reconfigured
– keeping pace with your
changing needs. And,
given that the technology
refresh rate for IT (server
and networking) equipment
can be 12-18 months, this
underscores the importance of
choosing an open and scalable
enclosure platform. Available
in a variety of heights, depths
and widths, Eaton’s fully
welded RP Series Enclosure
also offers a wide array of
accessories to meet the
specific storage requirements
of virtually all IT equipment.

Innovative Airflow
Management Solutions
At Eaton, we understand how air works in the data centre. Unlike
other approaches that simply insert more fans in the enclosure or
utilise spot cooling devices in the row, our RP enclosure system
features a modular design that addresses air volume, air direction
and heat exhaust within the enclosure. As your applications grow
or you consolidate servers, cooling capacity can be increased.
Chimney Heat Containment System (HCS)
Up to 40% of the cool air that is supplied from air conditioning
units in a typical data centre can be wasted. With Eaton’s
enclosures and chimney system, you can achieve closed
coupled heat containment up to 30kW. Our heat containment
solutions ensure that hot air created by your IT equipment
is channelled from the enclosures through the chimney
and returned to the data centre’s air conditioning units.
This eliminates air remixing and stratification and drives
higher efficiencies from your air conditioning units.

Rack-Based
Airflow Containment
Bypass airflow and mixing lead to inefficiencies,
shorter equipment life cycles and increased
operating costs. Managing airflow to
enclosures with varying densities, varying
building infrastructure and sporadic hot spots
is challenging, but can now be achieved
using a simple solution: Eaton’s HCS.
Features and benefits
• Reliable – separates hot exhaust
air and cold supply air, dramatically
increasing data centre reliability
• Reduce – separates capital and operational
expenditure by extending existing cooling
capacity throughout the data centre; freeing up
standard assets and lowering operational costs
• Scalable – it can be adapted to existing
infrastructures to increase rack utilisation
as your capacity demands grow
• Efficient – allows hotter air to return directly
to CRACs, increasing their efficiently
by operating at a higher delta T
• Flexible – it does not require you to alter
existing enclosure locations and is also
field installable on third-party enclosures

Integral Rack
Airflow Management
Airflow management within the rack can be as important as
managing flow within the room. Hot exhaust air circulating within
the rack can raise temperatures quickly, damaging IT equipment,
and making cooling equipment ineffective and wasting energy.
Eaton has heavily focused on sealing all leakage point, yet
fully allowing for cable pass-through. In our latest rack,
grommets can be placed to seal air from recirculating,
and yet allow easy cable pass-though management.
In today’s dynamic data centre environment, IT equipment is
frequently refreshed. These changes often leave open U-space
in the enclosure which can allow recirculation of hot exhaust
air back to the equipment inlet. This can cause overheating of
the equipment and subsequent shutdown of servers when the
maximum temperature threshold is reached. Blanking panels
provide a quick, easy and cost-effective solution for optimising air
circulation within an enclosure while maintaining high aesthetics.
Tool-less banking panels available in 1U, 2U and 8U.
Brush strip models allow routing of cables through the panel.
Banking Panels
• Significantly reduces recirculation of hot
exhaust air to the equipment inlet
• Plastic tool-less 1U, 2U and 8U
• Brush strip models allow routing of cables
through the panel; 1U, 2U.
• Expandable metal version offered in two sizes; 7-12U, 12-22U.
• EIA-310-D compliant for 19” equipment
Side dividers can be provided with grommets to guide air from
front to back, and prevent air passage between racks.
Vertical blanking panels with cable pass-through grommets prevent air from flowing
around IT equipment in 800mm-wide models. Cool air flows though IT equipment.

Side-to-Side
Airflow Management
Properly cooling network devices that require side-to-side airflow
in an enclosure can present many challenges. The air recirculation
that occurs in an enclosure can cause temperatures to rise
significantly, resulting in overheating of devices. Eaton’s Cisco
Conversion Kit and Airflow Manager draws air into the enclosure,
directs the air to the side intake of the device, and allows the
removal of the hot air from the enclosure. These solutions
extend equipment life by providing proper inlet temperatures
and eliminating harmful recirculation within the rack.

Cable Management – made simple
Eaton RP Series takes
a unique approach by
addressing cable and access
management concurrently.
From a structural standpoint,
the RP Series’ frame design
efficiently accommodates
large quantities of cables and
provides unmatched enclosureto-enclosure, raised floor and
overhead cable access. This
approach is not only crucial
to safeguarding cabling, but
it is required to maximise
airflow and provide clear,
easy access to equipment.
Overhead cable management system
Allows users to route cables on top of the enclosure
and offers separate trays for power and data.
Integrated trough

EATON RP Series IT Racks
Room Airflow
Management
Industry studies indicate that
an estimated 60% of the cool
air supplied to traditional data
centers is wasted because
it bypasses the intended IT
equipment and returns directly
to the hot air intake of the
CRAC. Adopting a cold or hot
aisle containment strategy
increases air efficiencies,
allowing a significant reduction
of cold air supply, translating
to longer hardware life and
valuable energy savings.
Eaton’s solutions can be equally
effective for both hot and cold
aisles in the data center.
• Containment structures can
be rack- or ceiling-supported,
allowing for easy rack
changes within the row.
Horizontal Ceiling Aisle Containment
Eaton’s robust ceiling system is modular and scalable , and can be supplied
to accommodate differences in rack heights and row spacing.
• Horizontal or vertical panels
mount easily to the top
of RP Series racks and
third-party enclosures.
• Containment panels are
comprised of clear materials
with multiple ratings
including UL94 V-0, ASTM E
84, FM4910 or antistatic.
Vertical Wall Aisle Containment
This system allows greater isolation for either cold or hot aisle containment. Vertical
containment panels connect from the top of the enclosures to the data center ceiling.
Chimney HCS – Heat Containment System
The rack-integrated chimney HCS returns hot air directly to the ceiling
plenum for individual racks or rows of racks. The chimney HCS can also
work with other containment options for maximum cooling control.

Intelligent
Rack PDUs
Maximise and manage your rack power
with Intelligent Power Distribution
Two key trends have emerged in the data centre: the demand
from today’s IT equipment for more power, and the increasing
cost of that power. Couple these with the worldwide growth
in demand for data centres and IT servers, and it is clear
that data centre managers are facing growing pressure to
manage and optimise their available power for growth, at the
same time as managing the increasing associated costs.
To help you achieve this, you need an accurate view
of the power and energy being consumed in the data
centre – from row to rack, and right down to the individual
server level. Only then can you truly understand the
power usage and optimise the available power.
