Industrial Gear Types and Oil Functions
Gears transmit power from one shaft to another, often changing speed, direction and torque.
Proper lubrication is critical. The following table identifies lubrication for a variety of gear types.

Spur, helical & bevel gears
• Use rust-and-oxidation (R&O) or antiwear (AW) lubricants for light loads (consider “Multipurpose R&O Oil”)
• Use extreme pressure (EP) lubricants for high or shock loads
Hypoid gears
• Use high EP lubrication for high-offset and heavy loads
Worm gears
• Use compounded lubricants (i.e., oiliness agents) because of high sliding action
• Use non-EP lubrication for yellow metals (i.e., brass or bronze)
Open gears
• Use asphaltic or residual oils (i.e., hot-melt or solvent cutback)
• Use synthetic polymeric-type lubricants
Note: tackiness and water resistance is important in open gear lubrication
