FAQ on TxBR - v2.1 April 2015 – Page 1 of 12 Applicable to Beijer Electronics iX TxBR and PPC TxBR Products General Availability: iX T15BR – April 2014 / PPC T15BR – July 2014 iX T7BR – April 2015 / PPC T7BR – April 2015 Note: the TxBR is a general reference to the entire product family. It includes the T7BR and the T15BR. For iX specific references, iX TxBR may be used; for panel PC specific references, PPC TxBR may be used. 1. How would you describe the iX TxBR and PPC TxBR? “R” is for rugged and reliable. The TxBR line has been designed to survive in extreme environments -- extreme temperature, shock, vibration, direct sun, or hazardous locations. The products are approved by major classification agencies for hazardous environments (UL Class I Division 2, ATEX Zone 2, IECEx Zone 2) as well as to maritime societies (ABS, DNV, GL, LR, KR) for use on vessels and off -shore installations. The units are designed to IP66, NEMA-4X and UL 50E Type 4X (outdoor) specifications for dusty and wet elements. The iX models have comprehensive HMI functionality including advanced alarm, trend, tag, audit and event management, state of the art graphics and object library, intuitive design environment, and universal connectivity including a complete line of drivers for communications with all major automation brands. 2. What are the main differences between the T7BR and the T15BR? The T7BR has a 7” display, the T15BR has a 15” display (screen size is measured diagonally). Standard iX TxBR models come with a 1 GHz Atom CPU but only the iX T15BR can be ordered with a higher performing 1.6 GHz CPU. Other than size and performance options, the units are very similar. How are the iX TxBR models different than the PPC TxBR models? The PPC TxBR models (7” and 15”) are rugged panel PCs loaded with Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES7) operating system. The iX TxBR models (7” and 15”) are rugged HMIs based on Windows CE 6.0 operating system. The PPC versions do not include the iX runtime software; the iX versions do. The PPC TxBR has more memory and storage than the iX TxBR (2 GB RAM versus 1 GB and 16 GB Flash versus 4 GB). The PPC units can be used for some SCADA and other Windows applications where the hardware will be installed in harsh, rugged and direct sun environments. The iX units are used in the same environments as the PPC version but do not support Windows PC applications as the PPC versions do. iX is the Beijer programming application used to design the screen layout and controller communications; it comes standard on the iX TxBR. This is what defines it as an HMI (vs a Panel PC). 4. How does the iX T7BR related or compare to the iX T7B? The units share similar housing, dimensions, appearance and connectivity options but many of the internal are different due to the rugged requirements of the T7BR. What other display sizes are available with these rugged characteristics? The TxBR can be order with 7” and 15” display sizes. Beijer will release a 12” (T12BR) model in 2016. The QTERM-A7 (7”) and QTERM-A12 (12”) are available with many of the same rugged design features, but in a slightly different form factor. See these rugged touch panels on Beijer Web sites: www.beijerinc.com or www.beijerelectronics.com. 14. Does Beijer have other electronic products designed for rugged environments? Yes. Many of the Westermo and Korenix networking products – switches, routers, industrial networking computers, I/O, media converters – operate in extreme temperatures. Westermo and Korenix have a number of independently certified Class I Division 2, ATEX, IECEx and maritime products. Both Westermo and Korenix are part of the Beijer Electronics Group. 15. When Beijer refers to rugged design, what testing is done to insure the design criteria are met? Beijer performs extensive testing to ensure the line of rugged terminals meet high environmental standards and to guarantee reliable operation in most environments. We use three main phases of testing to ensure the quality of our products: qualification testing, acceptance testing and sustaining testing. Temperature, Humidity, Thermal Shock - A typical qualification test will be a 24-hour test, with the temperature cycled between the high and low limits every four hours. Humidity testing is typically a five day test with the unit soaking at the rated temperature and humidity for the entire period. Thermal shock subjects the unit to a rapid coldto-hot or hot-to-cold thermal shock. Sealing - There are a numerous sealing specifications, such as NEMA-4X, UL 50E Type 4X (outdoor), IP66, SAE J1455. In some tests, an independent laboratory uses high pressure water jets to certify that no water penetrates the unit or housing. Vibration / Shock / Drop - All rugged terminals undergo some level of vibration testing (sinusoidal sweep, random and PSD). A typical test will be two hours of vibration to specified levels on each of three axes. An independent laboratory uses a “drop tester” – a machine designed to drop the unit to ensure the most rigorous impact. Key / Touch Screen Durability - All touch screen designs are rated to two million actuations. These parameters are logged and provide a clear picture of touch screen durability. Power Line Transients - All terminals must meet a level of resistance to power line transients (e.g., load dumps, reverse polarities, positive and negative spikes) and must have power supplies that can operate properly under “dirty power” conditions. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) - Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is the understanding of interference between electrical equipment including HMIs due to electromagnetic disturbances generated and received by the equipment. HMIs must be immune from a certain level of electromagnetic interference (EMI) in order to operate Americas Headquarters Global Headquarters Beijer Electronics, Inc. 1865 West 2100 South Salt Lake City, Utah 84119-1303 USA BeijerInc.com / 801-466-8770 Beijer Electronics AB P.O. They also must not emit electromagnetic disturbance that will impact the operation of nearby electrical equipment. There are mandatory immunity and emissions standards which HMIs must comply. Products are EMC verified either by the manufacturers where self-declaration is allowed or certified by independent laboratories. Rugged HMIs are often designed to broader EMC specifications than standard HMIs. For example, the T15BR will withstand a higher electrostatic discharge (ESD). This helps minimize problems of ungrounded personnel coming in contact with the HMI, important in hazardous locations. Rugged HMIs will also be designed (or hardened) to tolerate higher radiation emissions from adjacent machinery or sources. Rugged HMIs will have low electromagnetic susceptibility and high immunity. 16. Can you explain the differences between IP Code and NEMA? The IP Code and the NEMA are two similar though independent rating systems against particles and water intrusion into mechanical casings and electrical enclosures, such as an HMI. The IP Code originates from IEC 60529: the first digit (IP x _) represents the degree of protection against solid particles the second number (IP_ y) is for liquid protection. FAQ on TxBR - v2.1 April 2015 – Page 10 of 12 National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has a similar rating system for enclosures involving both hazardous and non-hazardous locations: NEMA Type Definition 1 General-purpose. Protects against dust, light, and indirect splashing but is not dust-tight; primarily prevents contact with live parts; used indoors and under normal atmospheric conditions. 2 Drip-tight. Similar to Type 1 but with addition of drip shields; used where condensation may be severe (as in cooling and laundry rooms). 3, 3S, 3X Weather-resistant. Protects against weather hazards such as rain and sleet; used outdoors on ship docks, in construction work, and in tunnels and subways. 3X includes corrosions. 3R Intended for outdoor use. Provides a degree of protection against falling rain and ice formation. Meets rod entry, rain, external icing, and rust-resistance design tests. 4 and 4X Watertight (weatherproof). Must exclude at least 65 GPM of water from 1-in. nozzle delivered from a distance not less than 10 feet for 5 minutes. Used outdoors on ship docks, in dairies, and in breweries. The 4X model has corrosion resistance. 5 Dust-tight. Provided with gaskets or equivalent to exclude dust; used in steel mills and cement plants. 6 and 6P Submersible. Design depends on specified conditions of pressure and time; submersible in water or oil; used in quarries, mines, and manholes. 7 Hazardous. For indoor use in Class I, Groups A, B, C, and D environments as defined in the NEC. 8 Hazardous. For indoor and outdoor use in locations classified as Class I, Groups A, B, C, and D as defined in the NEC. 9 Hazardous. For indoor and outdoor use in locations classified as Class II, Groups E, F, or G as defined in the NEC. 10 MSHA. Meets the requirements of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, 30 CFR Part 18 (1978). 11 General-purpose. Protects against the corrosive effects of liquids and gases. Meets drip and corrosion-resistance tests. 12 and 12K General-purpose. Intended for indoor use, provides some protection against dust, falling dirt, and dripping noncorrosive liquids. Meets drip, dust, and rust resistance tests. 13 General-purpose. Primarily used to provide protection against dust, spraying of water and noncorrosive coolants. Meets oil exclusion and rust resistance design tests. UL has a NEMA-like similar set of standards. UL 50E standard applies to enclosures for electrical equipment intended to be installed and used in non-hazardous locations in North America. The UL 50E Types parallel the non-hazardous NEMA Types as follows: Enclosures for indoor locations, Types 1, 2, 5, 12, 12K, and 13 Enclosures for indoor or outdoor locations, Types 3, 3R, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, and 6P IP and NEMA testing and claims can be done by each manufacturer or outsourced to a third party. Self-declaration is permitted; third-party verification is preferred. The T15BR is IP66 and NEMA-4X verified by a third party; UL 50E Type 4X verified by UL. Can you explain what hazardous certifications the TxBR products meet? The TxBR products are certified for use in hazardous locations by various certifying bodies. These certifications allow terminals to operate in areas where hazardous gases and vapors are occasionally present (Division 2 or Zone 2). These include: NEC/CEC - A North American intrinsically safe directive organizing hazardous areas into Classes and Divisions. Hazardous classifications are defined by USA National Electrical Code (NEC) and Canadian Electrical Code (CEC). The T15BR meets Class I Division 2 requirements (gas/vapors/liquids not normally present but may exist). ATEX - A European directive that protects employees for explosion risk in zones where there is a potential risk. The T15BR meets ATEX Zone 2 requirements (an explosive mixture is not likely to occur in normal operation and if it does exist, it does so only for a short time). IECEx - A hazardous area certification for products and services recognized and accepted worldwide. It is defined by IECEx 60079-15. The T15BR meets IECEx Zone 2 requirements (an explosive mixture is not likely to occur in normal operation and if it does exist, it does so only for a short time). 18. Can you explain what marine certifications the TxBR products meet? Initially, none, but those certifications are in process. The actual testing is complete. The paperwork often takes months to complete after the actual testing has been completed. Maritime certifications are established to ensure that ships and off shore structures are constructed safely. There are dozens of certifying agencies around the world. Beijer primarily focuses on agencies and certifications that are recognized in our geographic and target markets. These include: ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) is a North American certification that promotes security of life, property and the natural environment. DNV (Det Norske Veritas) is a Norwegian certification that helps manage risk in all phases of the ships life. GL (Germanischer Lloyd) is a German certifying agency setting standards in technology, safety and quality in the maritime industry. GL is now part of DNV. LR (Lloyd’s Register) is a UK-based organization that governs materials used, structures, machinery and control systems used in marine applications. KR (Korean Register of Shipping) is a South Korean-based non-profit classification society certifying maritime structure design, construction and maintenance. The TxBR can be installed in many locations on a ship like engine room (where conditions can be extreme), not just on the bridge. The TxBR meets certain locations classes for the DNV, GL, ABS, LR and KR certifications are: Temperature Class D Humidity Class B Vibration Class B EMC Class B Enclosure Class C (per IEC 60529) Americas Headquarters Global Headquarters Beijer Electronics, Inc. 1865 West 2100 South Salt Lake City, Utah 84119-1303 USA BeijerInc.com / 801-466-8770 Beijer Electronics AB P.O.
