----------------------------------------------------------------IR/PS Asian Foreign and Security Lunch Series
----------------------------------------------------------------Tuesday, October 18th, Public Lunch and Lecture 12:30 p.m. IR/PS Dean's Conference Room
David Finkelstein, Director, "Project Asia" & China Studies Center, The CNA Corporation
Working Title: "Chinese Military Modernization: An Institutional Overview"
This talk provides an overarching framework for understanding China's military modernization
program. Unlike many discourses on this topic, Dr. Finkelstein does not focus on weapons
systems and technologies, but rather drivers, aspirations, systemic processes and adjustments,
and the elements of institutional change that define today's modernizing People's Liberation
Army. Dr. Finkelstein's historical study, From Abandonment to Salvation: Washington's Taiwan
Dilemma, 1949-50 (GMU Press, 1993), was hailed in Presidential Studies Quarterly as "blazing a
new trail" and "will take an important place in the literature of U.S.-China relations in the mid-20th
Century." A retired U.S. Army officer, Finkelstein is a graduate of the United States Military
Academy at West Point, the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, the Army War
College, the U.S. Army Airborne School, and the U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer Course at the
JFK Center for Military Assistance and Unconventional Warfare.
Sponsored by UCSD Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.

Senior youth activists Palestinian Christine Soudah and Israeli Eran Schafferman
What the Israeli & Palestinian People Actually Want? Forget What You've Been Told...
Time and again campuses are filled with literature and speakers on the Middle East conflict. ProIsraeli and pro-Palestinian professors going head to head on whose history is truthful, parents of
children killed through terror or occupation denouncing the 'other side'. We've heard from the
people with the agendas, but what do average Israelis and average Palestinians think? Do they
want peace? Are they able to compromise? The vast majority of Israelis and Palestinians want
peace and are prepared to compromise for it and now they are asking for your help.
Americans for Informed Democracy (www.aidemocracy.org <http://www.aidemocracy.org/> ) is a
non-partisan organization working to raise global awareness on more than 250 U.S. university

----------------------------------------------------------------"Media (Mis)Representations of Peace and Conflict in Palestine/Israel"
----------------------------------------------------------------Wednesday, October 19, Lecture, check-in from 6:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. World Trade Center
Seminar Room, 1250 Sixth Avenue San Diego, CA
Professor Gary Fields, Ph.D. UCSD, Dept of Communications
"Media (Mis)Representations of Peace and Conflict in Palestine/Israel"
Professor Fields presentation focuses on misrepresentations and omissions of information by the
major media in covering the recent Gaza "Disengagement" and the conflict in Israel/Palestine. It
uses the Gaza events to raise questions about Israeli settlers and settlements, and the
characteristics of Israeli military occupation in Gaza and the West Bank that are typically missing
from media stories about the region. Finally, in raising these questions about settlement and
occupation, this presentation discusses future prospects for peace.
Gary Fields is a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California,
San Diego and is the author of TERRITORIES OF PROFIT (Stanford University Press, 2004). His
field of expertise focuses on communications and territorial development. He has a Ph.D. from
the University of California, Berkeley, and has contributed numerous opinion pieces on the
conflict in Israel/Palestine to both the local and national media. He is currently working on a new
book on the Wall in Israel/Palestine and has just returned from six weeks in Gaza and the West
Bank.

----------------------------------------------------------------Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies presents Cine latinoamericano
----------------------------------------------------------------Wednesday, October 19, Free Film Series 7 p.m. Copley International Conference Center
Institute of the Americas Complex
Todo el poder
A brave film that dares to portray urban police in Mexico as ruthless, dangerous thugs, Todo el
Poder is also a political thriller with sophisticated on-screen action. This film studies one of
Mexico 's most disheartening realities: that much of the crime its citizens face is perpetrated
either by the police themselves or by gangs with official protection. The movie, about a filmmaker
who takes on a band of criminals with high-level protection, is based loosely on actual events.
(102 min, Spanish with English subtitles)
Sponsored by UCSD Center for Iberian and Latin American Studies.
