The city’s landmark is situated 119m above the city and can be seen from literally every corner. To reach the fortress, there’s either a steep walking-way or a funicular. Guided tours on the fortress show the princes’ rooms, the torture chamber, an old mechanic organ (“Salzburger Stier”), a look-out and much more. A visit of the trick fountains is definitely worth it. To entertain his guests, prince-archbishop Markus Sittikus built these special gardens. Funny trick fountains and a mechanic theater which is moved by water enchant the visitors. Be careful: you might get wet during the visit! At the entrance of the palace gardens sits the stone dog, favorite of all kids. The “Monatsschlösschen“ on the Hellbrunn mountain hosts a folklore museum which displays old customs from the Salzburg region. On the Hellbrunn mountain you can also find the “Steintheater” (stone theater), a stage in a huge cave, where some plays are still performed.
