July 28, 2012 Dear Professor Jelier: Let me strongly encourage you to apply for the Award #3138 American Studies at University of Salzburg . Since I am closely familiar with your work and career, I think you would be a special asset for the American Studies Program at our university because you can offer perspectives that are different from those of previous Fulbright visiting faculty and could thus substantially ad to the quality of the program. Your background in Political Science and Urban Development along with Public Admin/Planning as well as in state and local government would allow Austrian students appreciate aspects of American (political) life and culture that are generally ignored here. The entire issue of state politics as well as the question of industrial decline and renaissance, which you could superbly present, would add a new dimension to American Studies that all too often pursues well-worn paths (popular and classical US culture) and locations confined to a few the well-known cities and states. We, in the department of political science, would certainly draw upon your expertise in politics and would be able to organize a number of joint activities, ranging from research to lecturing and teaching. Your long and distinguished career as an educator and your experience with overseas teaching makes you especially qualified to work with a non-American student audience. I give your application the strongest and most unqualified endorsement and hope we will be able to welcome you at the University of Salzburg.
