Certificate in English Language
Teaching to Adults
The Cambridge CELTA course will provide you with
pre-service training in English Language Teaching to
Adults. The course is practical, rather than academic,
in nature and is designed as an introductory course for
candidates who have little or no classroom experience
in adult English language teaching. The certificate is
an internationally recognised TESOL qualification and
success in the course has enabled many people to obtain
their first teaching position. The course is highly regarded
by employers for providing sound, initial training.
UTS:INSEARCH conducts both full-time and part-time
CELTA courses. The full-time courses are intensive and
extend over four weeks. Participants are expected
to devote several hours each evening to study and
preparation in addition to day-time sessions.
It is therefore important that you arrange to do
the course at a time when you do not have other
commitments. The part-time courses are less intensive
and extend over ten weeks.
Course Description
The course aims to develop your skills in the
following areas:
• Practical awareness of learners of language
and of materials
• Practical ability in classroom management and lesson
planning
• Effective delivery of a range of lesson types.
“Doing CELTA was a
practical, hands on
experience that taught
me the skills necessary
to be successful in the
education industry; as
well as making some
new friends.”

Course content
The course consists of three linked areas:
• Methodology
• Teaching Practice
• Written Assignments.
In the methodology sessions, CELTA tutors introduce
trainees to practical techniques for adult English language
teaching. Areas covered include how to help learners
develop their listening and speaking skills and how to
help them with grammar and pronunciation.
Each trainee does assessed teaching practice for a
minimum of six hours throughout the course. This takes
place during two-hour sessions in which teaching is
shared. Trainees teach classes of adult English language
learners under the supervision of CELTA tutors.
Four written assignments are submitted by trainees
during the course. These are practical assignments and
are linked to methodology and teaching practice. They
focus on areas such as language and skills development,
adult learners and their learning contexts and trainee
reflection on progress in teaching practice.
Assessment
There are two assessed components of trainees’
performance on the course:
• Teaching Practice
• Written Assignments.
Assessment is continuous and integrated, that is,
assessment takes place throughout the course and each
assessed component contributes to the overall grade. In
addition, candidates are required to submit a portfolio of
course work consisting of the four written assignments,
lesson plans and materials related to practice teaching
and other related documentation as specified by
Cambridge English.
Employment opportunities
UTS:INSEARCH has experienced substantial growth in
employment opportunities for new teachers, both in
Sydney and our offshore centres in China, Indonesia,
Myanmar and Vietnam. A preference is always given to
UTS:INSEARCH CELTA graduates for teaching positions
in these centres.
