Purchased Filter and Element Packaging Standards And Guidelines Foreword: These packaging standards and guidelines have been generated to establish a recognizable standard for supplying filters and elements to Champion Laboratories, Inc., that will increase productivity and minimize packaging costs through cooperative efforts with our suppliers. It is imperative that products be identified and packaged correctly to insure they reach Champion’s distribution center in a presentable and useable manner. Champion’s goal is to attain workable solutions with all vendors without imposing excessive costs either to the individual item or the means required to ship the products. Introduction: The purpose of this guide is to provide an overview of Champion Laboratories, Inc. packaging requirements for filters or elements that are purchased. Suppliers should familiarize themselves with these guidelines and use them as an aid to interpreting and handling our specifications. Establishing and maintaining two‐way communication is encouraged and will benefit both supplier and Champion Laboratories, inc. in alleviating misunderstandings. Our cases are made in the regular slotted style (RSC). This may also be referred to as the master pack or master carton. Commodity Code: A 4 digit numerical code denoting a specific type of material, component or finished product. Part Number: A 15 digit number that will appear on a purchase order that allows identification of the shipment and its contents to be visually easy to identify during receiving and shipping. Construction Code: A 5 digit number that refers to a specific drawing or filter. Corrugated Board: A packaging material consisting of a central medium paper that has been fluted, and on one or both sides have a flat sheet of linerboard. Flute: The undulation or corrugation pressed into medium paper as used in the construction of corrugated fiber board. Size is designated by letter. Champion commonly uses B and C sizes. RSC: Regular Slotted Container. The style of case we use for master packaging filters. Primary Level Packaging: The first level of packaging for a filter. The level will chronologically step up as another level of packaging is added. The order we use in step ups are: ‐ Bag/Shrink Wrap ‐ Individual Carton ‐ Case ‐ Bulk Pack (Pallet) Master Pack: See Case Section 2 General Instructions Date Coding Date coding aides in quality control allowing us to determine when a particular batch of product was produced. If we need to recall product for any reason, we can identify specifically which items within inventory need to be recalled based on the manufacturing date. Date coding is used to track product changes. Over the life of the product, it is subject to changes ranging from its construction to packaging. Date codes allow us to track within our inventory which products are of which production period. It also allows us to distinguish between the older inventory and new inventory for proper inventory control. Date Code Type For all purchased filters and elements, the following date code will be affixed to the product, as illustrated on the following page, it its proper locations. The date code is comprised of the following: P = Purchased ## = Month of Year (6) # = Year (7) 1 = January 8 = 1998 2 = February 9 = 1999 3 = March 0 = 2000 10 = October 1 = 2001 12 = December 2 = 2002 P612727 ## = Day of Month (12) ## = Vendor Code (27) Assigned by Champion Country of Origin The Country of Origin is a United States Customs requirement. Products which enter the United States are inspected and must be identified stating which country manufactured the item. All products will have clearly defined print on the product and the container in which it was shipped, either of the following: “ Made in “ or “ Product of “ The blank lines represent the country where the item was manufactured. Printing The Country of Origin must be affixed to the product using a permanent marking means. See the flow chart attached in this section to assist in determining the location of country of origin marking. 5 Digit Construction Code Number When receiving the purchase order, the order will reference a 15 digit part number. Of the 15 digits, the first 4 are a filter type reference or commodity code, the next 5 digits are the construction code numbers. These 5 digits are to be placed on the unit in the same manner the country of origin is affixed. A typical example of a 15 digit construction code number is as follows: 000108625476070 Filter Type Number (0001) Construction Code Number (08625) Section 3 Product Identification Standards (Refer to Filter Date Coding and Identification Illustration) Spin‐on Filters All filters will be painted white, and have a minimum coverage of 1 dry mil on each individual unit, measured at any point on the filter. The filter’s paint will cover the entire surface area of the unit, including the seam. Residual or tramp paint will not be acceptable in the gasket retaining area, on the gasket itself or on the backplate of any filter. Material specification sheets for high solids paint and for powder paint are included in the material specification section of this manual. All filters are to be identified with a five digit construction number, date code and country of origin. The identification must be placed on the dome area of the unit. Standard Automotive Air Filters All round air filters are to be identified with the five digit construction code number, date code and country of origin on the seal ring surface. All panel filters are to be identified with the five digit construction code number, date code and country of origin on the end pleat of the paper pack. All molded plastic panel filters are to be identified with the five digit construction code number, date code and country of origin. The identification may be molded into the body of the unit, but preference is to have the identification on the end of the unit. Heavy‐Duty Air Filters All filters should be identified with the five digit construction number, date code and country of origin on the top end cap. Elements or Cartridges All elements or cartridges should be identified with the five digit construction number, date code and country of origin on the top end cap. All elements or cartridges shall be individually shrink wrapped or bagged, using a Cryovac D940, 60 gauge shrink wrap material or equivalent. Section 4 Master Package (Bulk Container Guidelines) Standard Spin‐on Filters, Standard Automotive Air Filters (Round and Panel) and Heavy‐Duty Spin‐on Filters All filters will be packaged in a corrugated shipping container that does not exceed 40” wide x 48” long x 50” high. Filters may be bulk packed without individual containers, as long as the bulk pack container is constructed of durable materials to protect the product during shipment. Depending upon the weight and orientation of certain filters, it is recommended that b‐flute corrugation be used in assembling shipping containers and their contents. Pads that will separate layers of product in the bulk container may be constructed of c‐
flute corrugation. Although it will be the determination of the supplier, it is recommended that no more than a ½” (1.27 cm) space void be encountered on any of the sides or of the top of the bulk containter(s). Heavy‐Duty Air Filters Due to the wide variety of filter sizes in the heavy‐duty product line, the master pack quantity will vary from 1 to 6 units per pack. a.) If the filter overall diameter is greater than 10 inches (25.4 cm), each filter must be individually packaged into a corrugated case. b.) If the overall filter diameter is less than 10 inches (25.4 cm) but greater than 7.5 inches (19.05 cm), the filters will be placed in a master pack quantity of 4 filters per case. c.) If the overall diameter is less than 7.5 inches (19.05 cm), the filters will be placed in a master pack quantity of 6 filters per case. All master packs greater than a quantity of one, will be separated by a c‐flute corrugated pad to protect the filters during handling and shipping. Master Package Identification Standards The master package is to be identified with the following information: a) The 15 digit part number b) Catalog number c) Quantity per container(s) d) Country of origin e) Bar code label f) Pallet and contents label The identification may be printed or stenciled onto no less than two adjacent sides of the container. If printing or stenciling capabilities do not exist, a shipping case label may be substituted. If labels are used as a substitute for printing or stenciling, there are two acceptable options to identify the contents: Option #1: Two identical labels must be centered on adjacent sides of the shipping container. Option #2: A single corner label can be centered vertically on the shipping container. This style of label will be applied to one panel and wrap around to the adjacent panel. Part Number When receiving the purchase order, the order will reference a 15 digit part number. Of the 15 digits, the first 4 are a filter type reference or commodity code, the next 5 digits are the construction code numbers, the next 4 digits are brand code reference numbers and the last 2 are location numbers. A typical example of a 15 digit part number is as follows: Construction Code (08625) Location Number (70) 000108625476070 Filter Type (0001) Brand Code Reference Number (4760) Catalog Number When receiving the purchase order, the order will reference a catalog number. Examples of typical catalogs numbers are: LAF‐3351, PH2235 or LP2232. UPC Shipping Container Code All shipping containers will have a 4” L x 2” H (10.16 cm x 5.08 cm) bar code label attached. The bar code format will follow approved Interleaved 2 of 5 Shipping Case Label standards. The bar code will be applied to the printed side of the case, in the lower right hand corner. (Refer to shipping case standard illustration for proper location). All bar code assignments for the shipping container(s) will be performed by Champion Laboratories, Inc. Packaging Engineering Department. For detailed code and symbol specification information or to obtain a copy of the UPC Shipping Container Code and Symbol Specification Manual, contact: Uniform Code Council, Inc. 8163 Old Yankee Road Suite J Dayton, OH 45458 A typical sample of the bar code label is as follows: Section 5 Material Specifications Section 6 Bulk Palletizing Specification Palletizing Requirements Loads which are secured to the pallet using shrink or stretch wrap, must use materials of sufficient thickness to retain the load. Shrink or stretch wrap used to secure the load will be clear or tinted to allow bar code label readability via bar code scanners or verifiers. Total pallet height of the load will not exceed 50 inches (127 cm). The maximum weight of each full pallet will not exceed 2000 lbs. (746 kg), regardless of size and type of product or overall pallet dimensions. Champion Laboratories, Inc.
