What Is Primer and When Should I Use It?
A primer is designed to prepare bare metal, wood, canvas or other materials to create a smooth surface
for which your Krylon® spray paint will be applied. A primer should be used on projects in order to seal
the surface, which will help:

Why Should I Use A Primer?
Generally, using a primer improves the amount of coverage you get from a can of Krylon® spray paint and

• Metal – Increases corrosion resistance on bare metal surfaces
• Wood – Helps avoid an uneven paint finish by allowing for even penetration of bare wood surfaces

How to Apply Spray Paint Evenly
Follow these simple tips to help ensure that your Krylon® spray paint is
evenly applied to your project every time:
• Shake your Krylon spray can vigorously for two minutes after the ball within the can begins to rattle
• Test your spray paint and painting technique on a piece of scrap material until you have achieved a
satisfied result
• Hold your Krylon spray can 6 to 8 inches away from project surface
• Spray project using several thin coats of spray paint instead of one thick coat
• Begin and finish your spray pattern off the object, releasing the tip at the end of each pass
• Use an even side-to-side motion
• Overlap your spray pattern by about one-third with each pass
• For smoothest results, it is suggested that you always apply a coat of primer before applying spray paint
Spray Paint Safety Tips
Krylon® makes using spray paint safe and easy. Prior to starting your spray paint project, read the safety
tips provided on the label of every Krylon can, and take into consideration these five additional safety tips:
1.Stay out of heat and away from fire. Make sure to keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Don’t
smoke. Extinguish all flames, pilot lights and heaters. Turn off stoves, electric tools and appliances,
and any other sources of ignition.
2.Keep aerosol away from heat sources, too. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or heat from
radiators, stoves, hot water and other hot items that may cause bursting. Additionally, for best finish,
avoid using Krylon spray paint directly in hot, humid weather.
3.Leave the spray paint can whole. Do not puncture, incinerate or burn aerosol cans. Do not discard
cans in a trash compactor. But do recycle them when empty.
4.Ventilate. Vapors are harmful; avoid continuous breathing of spray mist by spraying outside whenever
possible. When spraying inside, open windows and doors to ensure fresh air entry during application
and drying. Wearing respiratory protection is also helpful – most hardware stores sell a variety of
painting masks.
5.Keep spray paint on your project, not on you. Avoid contact with your eyes and skin. Wear gloves or
wash your hands after using.
Take the following precautions when painting lighting and electrical fixtures:
• Read and follow all lighting/fixture manufacturer stated safety precautions.
• Ensure corded lamps are unplugged from electricity.
• Inspect electrical cords for any damage that could come into contact with unwanted paint or
overspray.
• Do NOT paint wiring.
• Do NOT paint light bulbs.
• Do NOT paint damaged cords which may have exposed wiring.
• Do NOT paint parts of fixtures that get excessively hot, unless using a High Heat paint specified for
that purpose.

Application:
Cut nozzle at 45° angle to the desired orifice /
bead size. Load cartridge into a caulk gun and
squeeze trigger to start flow of material. Keep
nozzle pressed against the surface and slowly
draw along seam. Apply a uniform, continuous
bead. Apply caulk bead with a raised crown to
allow for shrinkage. Cured beads should be
between 1/8” – 1/2” wide and 1/8” – 1/4” deep.
Masking:
Mask areas that are not to be caulked/sealed.
Remove masking immediately after tooling
before a skin has formed on the caulk/sealant.
