learance sales are over, and the mannequins are all dressed
up in their spring finery. The new collections include many
“crossover collaborations.” Jil Sander has teamed up with
Uniqlo for a limited spring/summer collection, including a gentlemen’s fine-gauge V-neck sweater (RMB 199) and a perfectly finished
black or dark grey suit (RMB 999). Spanish fashion chain Mango
has commissioned Moises de la Renta to design a line of T-shirts
accessorized with tulle, jewelry and stones (RMB 250-350). Sportswear giant Adidas has partnered with Disney for infant and kids’
“performance products.” Streetwear store Source brought in a crew
of Imperial Stormtroopers to celebrate being the exclusive retailer of
Adidas Original’s Star Wars limited edition apparel and footwear.
If these retailing maneuvers fail to impress you, let’s look at what
some individual boutiques have in store. At the UCCA store, “Warm
Your Heart, Warm Your Soul” is the theme of the store’s “China
Design” products, centering on plush handwarmers with a built-in
electric heating element. For every two warmers sold, one will be
donated to underprivileged children in western China. Other heartwarming items include a blue flower hot-water bottle and a rabbit
sculpture series. Sanlitun’s Original Design Circle has launched
many new products as well; local interior designer Jia Li has created
twelve sleek crystal-studded bookmarks (RMB 148 each) featuring
the ears of the zodiac animals, and Guo Changxi has produced lighting
fixtures repurposed from flower-printed paper shopping bags
(RMB 90 each). If you like something, don’t hesitate to buy – all the
stalls are pop-up (i.e. here today, gone tomorrow).
Devotees of Marc Jacobs know that his “Special Items” (a line
of charming, low-priced accessories) can be found at the brand’s two
Beijing stores, Shin Kong Place and China World Shopping Mall. In
appreciation of Jacob’s Chinese fans, they’ve produced postcard tees
printed with its Shin Kong Place store address (RMB 390). If these
tees are not to your taste, there’s plenty of other options: shopping
bags (RMB 210), rings (RMB 100), and other jewelry.
Sad news: All stores in the CBD’s Maison Mode shopping mall,
including Bally, BCBG Max Azria, Coppelia, Paul & Shark and
Stone Island, mysteriously shut down their doors one night in late
December. When we asked the staff in the mall about whether these
stores will re-open, we got this ambiguous answer: “There’s Shin Kong

Photographer Gao Yuan turns to jewelry design

“T
he old belief is that jewelry made
of copper is cheap, while wearing
gold is a sort of status symbol,”
says Gao Yuan. “For me, materials are just
tools to realize ideas. Original design and visual
aesthetics are the only standards when I make
jewelry.”
Most people only know Gao Yuan for her role in
the love triangle with singers Faye Wong and Dou Wei
ten years ago. Some might know of her reputation as
a talented photographer of local rock musicians. But
before last September, when she held her “Jacaranda
2009” exhibition at the Fei Space, very few people knew
that Gao Yuan had been designing jewelry for more than
20 years.
Gao Yuan’s passion for crafting was ignited when she was a
teenager, thanks to a handy father who could make anything from
campstools to bookshelves. In crafting her first pieces, she used
everything from copper wire, glass beads, electrical wire and even
pencils. “Jewelry-making has been my way to express my feelings
and write out memories, just like other people use their diaries as
an emotional outlet.”
Her brand is named Yuan. The pieces are made of copper, silver
and leather; their design varies between contemporary and classical,
but each is engraved with numbers or Chinese characters. “A story
lies behind every piece,” says Gao. Take, for example, the Pi (π)
Ring that she always wears. The interlinked rings are made from
copper – one smooth, the other rough – both are engraved with the
number 3.14159265. “The polished ring and the wrinkled ring stand
for me and my mother, respectively. Like many other mothers and
daughters, we have a weird relationship; whenever we talk we’ll run
into conflict quickly, and I always feel guilty afterwards. Pi (π) is
like the immutable mother-daughter relationship, and I made it to
express my love for her.”
Though she doesn’t have her own store yet, Gao Yuan’s collection can be found in Fei Space and Blue Lotus as well as at
Lost and Found. In addition, she’s planning
to open a shop on Taobao.com. Pieces range
in price from RMB 500-1,000 (silver), RMB
300-600 (copper).
