Technology Enhanced Items and
Galileo’s Digital Curriculum Platform
Implementing Next Generation Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
The rise of digital technology and its widespread application call for new approaches to the design and implementation of assessment and
curriculum. In an effort to assist districts and charters to prepare students for the next generation of assessments and curriculum, ATI is
introducing technology enhanced (TE) items through its Digital Curriculum Platform in support of instruction aligned to new and changing
standards and in order to provide opportunities for students to learn response procedures for the new forms of assessment.
Technology Enhanced Items
ATI has developed several distinct types of TE items informed by PARCC* and
SBAC** examples as well as by information from state departments of education.
These items include the: multi-part item, selectable text item, sequencing item,
expanded selected response item, performance-based item, and customized TE item.
The customized TE item can be used to build a broad array of item types and reflect
the wide range of TE items likely to be encountered on state-wide assessments.
In addition, TE items are designed to accommodate different levels of cognitive
complexity and, when presented through the Digital Curriculum Platform, help to
increase a student’s familiarity with new item types.
Digital Curriculum Platform
TE items are available in various subjects for kindergarten through
high school. Customized TE items for kindergarten contain an audio
recording of the item.
The Galileo Digital Curriculum Platform supports rapid dynamic curriculum
development integrating instruction with assessment to promote learning. A Galileo digital curriculum consists of two major components:
a series of online Instructional Units defining the scope and sequence of instruction and offering a variety of resources to guide
instruction and, within each Unit, a series of Instructional Dialogs enabling the online delivery of assessment and instruction. What is
taught as well as what is learned can be tracked through digital curriculums.
Instructional Units
Instructional Units outline what will be taught in a designated period of time. Instructional
Units typically contain the standards to be addressed, instructional content, resources,
and Instructional Dialogs. Instructional resources may include multimedia recordings, links
to online resources, and links to other Dialogs. A series of Units can form the complete
curriculum for a particular subject and grade. Units may be bulk scheduled for rapid, broad
dissemination. Once scheduled, Units are easily accessed from the Class Calendar and
Teaching Dashboard.
Instructional Dialogs
Instructional Dialogs, supporting synchronous and asynchronous online interactions
between teachers and students, integrate assessment into the instructional process to
promote learning. ATI offers a variety of Dialogs which are customizable, sharable, and may
be linked together to achieve complex instructional goals. They are designed to provide
adjustable instruction to target individual students, classes, and even large intervention
groups involving multiple classes or schools. TE items are included in Dialogs providing
valuable experience with new item types and assessing what has been learned. For
multiple-choice items, the student’s response to an item prompts real-time feedback to
guide learning which evidence shows is more effective than delayed feedback. For TE
items and constructed response items, the teacher may use the Writeboard tool to provide

Technology Enhanced Items
TE items are designed to elicit higher order thinking skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. Instructional Dialogs link TE items to
instruction thereby focusing instruction on highly valued cognitive skills. In effect, TE items become teaching tools, not just assessment items.
TE items elicit cognitive processes that can be shaped and refined through differentiated instruction. Thus, the items test and teach at the
same time.
Digital Curriculums
Instructional Units can form the complete curriculum for a particular subject and
grade. Units may be bulk scheduled for rapid, broad dissemination and once
scheduled, may be easily accessed from the Teaching Dashboard. Instructional
Dialogs support online interactions between teachers and students and integrate
assessment into the instructional process to promote learning. Dialogs are
customizable and may be linked together to achieve complex instructional goals.
Performance Based Assessment

of a project requiring an extended time period to complete. The assessment
component may include a wide range of TE items. Instructional Dialogs provide an ideal environment for the implementation of performancebased assessment because they are designed to integrate assessment with instruction.
Flexibility
Curriculum components may be changed and edited as often as needed using Galileo’s Curriculum Builder and Dialog Builder. Galileo
Digital Curriculum Platform supports flexible and dynamic curriculum development. Units and Dialogs can be added, deleted, copied, and
modified in a digital curriculum. Changes made to Units and Instructional Dialogs occur in real-time ensuring that curriculum components
accessed from the Teaching Dashboard contain the most current content available.
Cost-Effective Approach
Galileo K-12 Online is comprehensive, standards-based, and research supported. The system provides an array of curriculum, assessment,
instructional effectiveness, and reporting tools aligned to Common Core and local state standards and facilitates advancements in teaching
strategies, assessments, and implementation of instructional effectiveness initiatives.
Easy-to-Use Dashboards
Galileo Dashboards provide users a single location from which to view and interact with curriculum, assessment, and instructional
effectiveness data. Galileo’s curriculum components are accessed from the Digital Curriculum Explorer widget on the Teaching Dashboard
driving the implementation and dissemination of curriculum in just a few short clicks.
Instruction and Learning Tracking
Educators are able to easily determine what instruction has taken place
by viewing data summarizing Dialog participation and what learning has
occurred by reviewing assessment results.
Assessment and Instruction Integration

content and resources to support learning. They may also contain items
including TE items to assess learning. This leads to a continuous and cohesive process combining instruction and assessment.
Real-Time Feedback for Teachers and Students
Galileo’s Instructional Dialogs provide real-time feedback for both students and teachers. Student responses to multiple-choice items are
immediately scored and feedback is provided to the student to guide learning. Teachers can provide immediate feedback to TE items using
the Writeboard tool. Educators may use the Dialog Monitoring tool to observe student responses in real-time.
Student Access to Technology
Online instruction provides all students the opportunity to interact with technology in a way that expands their ability to use technology
effectively.
