PP Susan Eaton joined the meeting fashionably late and was appropriately announced by Howie. PP Paul Cooper received multi-bashing and admonishing from Howie and Secretary Carol Smith for wearing a bright red shirt and for performing his assigned club duties. Mary Jo Pasek, fresh off her stint as Hot Dog Server Extraordinaire, heaped kudos on fellow Rotarian, Lori Malkin, for her ongoing support of charitable activities – specifically Link To Life. Greg Desme doffed his Red Badge and donned the Blue Badge as Howie accepted Greg’s 100 percent initialed roster. Jeanne Maxwell Mary Jo Pasek Kenzi Williamson Jason Williamson Marlene Heise Gina Hayden (New York-AP) On September 21, 2005, after 5 years of heated debate, the Commission of Human Rights approved this new International Symbol of Marriage. Because Karen Wass was graciously pouring coffee for all of her tablemates (as the accompanying photo attests), she was unable to stand while addressing gavel-happy hubby Howie who punished his charitable wife with a 5 dollar assessment. Karen was heard muttering something under her breath about Howie’s new sleeping arrangement – in the kennels with their Jack Russell Terriers. Michael Cooke, DVM, was later observed riding down the elevator with Howie asking if his shots were up to date. Gary “Man-Of-Many-Words” Fachin then told the club about the successful Hot Dog Picnic attended by 130 less-fortunate residents. A few of the happy diners are pictured on the following page. Bruce Keith, visiting Rotarian and Past President of Bakersfield East Rotary issued a plea for a BBRC member to house a traveling member of the incoming Group Study Exchange. A bed and breakfast is basically all that will be needed. Randy Merriman announced the Pismo Beach Rotary Foundation Golf Tournament to be held on October 17th. Ross McClintock looked up from his breakfast burrito just in time to get smacked 25 bucks by Fine Marshal Jerry Saba for an ill-timed bear and deer hunting trip. Karen Wass then was afforded a “pay back” to Howie when she was asked to describe his new motorcycle and then determine the level of his penalty. Seems 1300 cubic centimeters is worth 10 cents per cc as Karen gleefully suggested a fine of $130. Ouch! That earlier wifely fine cost Howie dearly, and he STILL has to sleep with Fido. Jason Williamson cleared up the Wednesday morning mystery for young daughter, Kenzi, as she saw firsthand what many successful Bakersfield business folk do once each week at O-dark-thirty! Some of us remember Kay Boehm-Fannin before leaving town for Texas with her family. from Kay B-F who asked her to say hello to thought we would print Kay’s letter for your who sponsored Kay Pitts into BBRC Kay P. received a nice letter via email the club members. Better yet, we enjoyment: Kay It's great to hear from you. I'm glad to know that you're still active in BBRC. I certainly enjoyed being a part of that organization... good people and worthwhile causes. I hope all is well with you. How are things at Aera? Still a lot going on, I'm sure. After 4-1/2 years in the Houston area, Gary and I and our 3 boys are now living in Lagos. We had a great time in Texas, and so far we're having a great time in Nigeria. Just like our time in Bakersfield, we have found lots of fun things to do and met some terrific people in both Texas and Nigeria. It's different in Nigeria, but still fun. We were able to go on a quick safari in southern Africa for a week last month (Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa) and had an awesome trip. We are planning to travel to see a cocoa plantation in Nigeria this weekend for a quick trip. Work is good... lots of new projects. Well I'll keep this short. I'm at a meeting in Malaysia, so trying to catch up on email this evening. Tell fellow friends in Bako hello for me if you have a chance. We have very good memories from our time there. Take care and stay in touch. Best Regards, Kay Boehm-Fannin Page 2 of 4 Let’s keep Becky Smith and her family in our prayers. According to Becky’s brother-inlaw, Tim Cox, Becky’s father, Jerry Lamb, suffered a severe heart attack. THE PROGRAM JACK BENSUSEN gave BBRC a mouth-watering, verbal history tour of Dewar’s Candy Shop. Jack began his career with Dewar’s in 1990 while still in high school. He has held many duties during his 15 years. The Dewar’s dynasty began in the 20’s by J.H. Dewar. His son, Jim, assumed the reins in 1940. Today, Jim’s son George, and George’s children, Mike and Heather, have the day-to-day operation. Rosie, Jim’s sister, is still at the shop busily dipping chocolate. Ice Cream was added to the Dewar’s lineup in 1920. In 2001, a second store was built in northwest Bakersfield. This expansion meant more production space was needed, so another building was purchased effectively tripling the size of Dewar’s. In June of this year, a monumental event occurred at the local sweetery – Dewar’s began selling about 400 gallons of ice cream monthly to the Disney Corporation. Hopefully, Dewar’s will eventually take its Bakersfield tradition into Disneyland itself. Did anyone happen to notice who was passing around the Dewar’s taffy chews after the meeting with a mischievous glint in his eyes and with an ominous message, “Eat lots of those!” He was none other than our own Doctor Joe Nunez., DDS!! HOT DOG PICNIC LUNCH Shown are some of the 130 less-fortunate Bakersfield residents who enjoyed lunch at CHW. Kudos to Gary Fachin for his leadership on such an outstanding, successful event. Thanks, too, to the team of Karen Fachin, Sister Judy Morasci, DeAnn Straub and Mary Jo Pasek and President Cecil. The editor apologizes in advance if he missed someone.
