WelcometotheLinguisticsLanguageProgram,aunitoftheDepartmentofLinguisticsatUCSD.Weoffer
basicinstructioninAmericanSignLanguage,Arabic,French,German,Italian,Portuguese,andSpanish,in
sixheritagelanguages(Arabic,Filipino,Korean,Persian,andVietnamese),andinover60other

Arichlanguage-learningenvironment:Learningalanguagerequireslotsofmeaningfulinput
andinteraction.Ourcoursesaredesignedtogiveyouexactlythat,duringbothin-classandoutof-classactivities.
Anenjoyableandsupportiveclassroomatmosphere:Learningalanguageshouldbefun,and
youwillfindourclassestobeapleasuretoattend.
Acommittedanddedicatedstaff:Wehaveonemaingoal:givingyouthemosteffective

AcademicIntegrity
Allstudentsareexpectedtodotheirownwork.Thefollowingactsconstituteacademicdishonestyand

Academicdishonestyincludesbutisnotlimitedto:
1. Duringawrittenorcomputerizedexam/quiz,usingbooks,notesoron-lineresources,copying
fromanotherstudentorreceivingunauthorizedhelp.
2. Turninginawrittencompositionthathasbeencopiedfromabookorsomeotherprinted
source,fromtheInternetorthathasbeenwritteninwholeorinpartbysomeoneotherthan
thestudent.
Moreover,studentsareexpectedtoshowproperrespectforinstructorsandfellowstudentsinclass
discussionsandcompositions.Improperandindecentlanguageusewillnotbetolerated.Seealsothe

Coursegoals
TheConversationandGrammarsectionsaretwohalvesofonecourseandneedtobetakentogether.
Botharedesignedtoimmerseyouinthelanguageandgiveyouapracticalabilityasquicklyaspossible.
Thetwohalvesaretogetherworth5units,soyoushouldexpectaheavierworkloadthanatypical4-unit
class.

Conversation(MWF)isasmallerclass,withspecialattentiontovocabularydevelopmentand
culturalknowledge.TheteacherisknownasaConversationInstructor.
§
Analysis(TuTh)isalargerclass,withspecialattentiontolistening,reading,andlearninghowto
analyzethelanguageandtheculture.TheteacherisknownasAnalysisInstructor.
Attendance
AmaximumofthreeabsencesintheConversationsectionandtwoabsencesintheAnalysissectionwill
betolerated.Eachfurtherabsenceinasectionwilllowerbyonelevelyourgradeinthatsection.For
example,oneadditionalabsencewillloweraB+toaBoraCtoaC-.Threelatearrivalsinclasswill
countasoneabsence.Ifyoumiss2weeksormoreofclassforanyreason,youareencouragedtodrop
thecourse;otherwise,youareatriskoffailing.
Ifyouareabsentandmissaquiz,anin-classexam,orotherassignment,seeyourConversationor
AnalysisInstructorimmediatelytodetermineiftheworkcanbemadeup.Anapprovedmake-upmust
becompletedwithinoneweek.Workmaybemadeupatthediscretionoftheinstructor,butthe
absencecannotbemadeup.

grouptakehome.YourConversationInstructorwillprovidespecificinstructionsforeach
compositionaswellasagradingrubric.Ingradingyourcomposition,yourConversation
Instructorwilltakeintoconsiderationuseofvocabularyandgrammarcoveredinclass,
organizationandcreativity.
Conversationfinal:AnIndividual15minuteconversationwithyourConversationInstructor
(whichmaybetaped).Signupinclassinweek10foranappointmentduringfinalsweek.The
