40 hours in night mode.
Focus on
internationalization
With such a vast variety of
products, the company’s next
focus is on increasing growth
on the back of demand from
international markets. Bhargava averred, “In the previous
year, L&T’s Electrical & Automation business grossed revenues of `4,586 crore, of which
28 per cent came from international businesses.”

its market share with a customer-focused approach and
promote internationalization
through global bases.

Changing the
Thinking Pattern!
I
“This is the most innovative
conference that I have ever
attended. The young students
have good ideas and they have
potential. The government
should help and support the
youth implement and realize
their ideas by creating a change
in the education sector, wherein
students are provided with the
infrastructure to implement
their ideas. Education boards
such CBSE, State Boards and
Engineering Boards should
make innovation part of the
curriculum.”

▶ Innovation Day
at a glance
nnovation is defined as the process of
converting an idea into a product or
service that creates value for which
people are ready to pay. So a real innovation,
or for an innovation to become a reality in
a country like India, it must be aimed at
people at the grass root level and it must
also embrace the future, said Raj Eswaran,
President IEEMA in his opening remarks
at the ‘Innovation Day’ organized by IEEMA
as a part of the Elecrama-2014. Hundreds
of engineering students from colleges across
the country attended the event. The event
aimed to create an environment that
enlightened, inspired and elevated all the
participants. The other distinguished
people at the summit were CEO, Meher
Energy Ventures Pvt Ltd, Mustafa Wajid;
Chief Technical Officer, Crompton Greaves
Ltd, D Patil; Chief Technical Officer, ABB
Ltd, G Testi, and Chairman & Managing
Director, Technical Associates Ltd and Vice
President, IEEMA, Vishnu Agarwal.

“Industry and research should
go hand in hand. Unlike other
parts of the world where
research is initiated as an
industrial effort, in India there
is some disconnect. In order to
increase innovation, this young
talent should be caught young
as they have very good ideas
and if they are encouraged,
those ideas could be turned into
fruitful actions and can be
translated into business
transactions.”

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
9
Introducing New Technologies
Going green
With the growing focus on
renewable energy, India,
although having a very low
carbon foot print, is
developing technologies for
renewable power generation.
Focusing on the need of the
hour, the company is now
concentrating on R&D in
this field. “Renewable
energy based solar and wind
is being widely supported by
the Government of India
with financing options and
capital expense depreciation
benefits. The focus is also on
bio-mass based power
generation for rural areas to
supplement local power
consumption, doing away
the need for large investment
in transmission networks,”
revealed Kakkar.
Governmental support
According to him, “With
the current global warming
situation, the stress will be
on developing countries like
India to consider various
existing technologies and to
adopt cleaner technologies.
The first criterion would be
to decrease dependency on
traditional and fast depleting
fuels like coal and gas.”
Since India is a net importer,
and government regulations
keep fuel prices subsidized,
the financial burden of these
imported energy sources is
extremely high.
He added, “The second
criterion is to focus on the
smart grid, with optimization
and demand side management
as the key elements of the
smart grid implementation
pilots in India. The challenge
of integrating renewable
energy with the large
transmission grids, and
transparently making this
energy
available
to
distribution companies at
competitive pricing, is
important. GE enables local
solutions through its research
and
offers
integrating
transmission and distribution
software for wind turbine
management systems.”
Focus on India
Reliability and availability
of power is another concern
for an ever expanding
economy like India. “GE
continues to invest in R&D
focused on energy storage
based on innovative battery
technologies,”
Kakkar
mentioned.
India plays a very
important role in GE’s
overall business strategy too.
“With investments across
three technology centers,
factories, and a longstanding commitment to the
Indian market, the company
believes that India will play
one of the most significant
roles in GE’s growth
strategy. With India specific
research and customization
in product development,
building
solutions,
integration
capabilities,
partnerships for product
delivery / integration, and a
unified ONE GE, we are
engaging in delivering
world-class products and
services across a spectrum of
customers and facilities,”
explained Kakkar.
GE has invested in an
upcoming world class Multi
Modal Facility in Pune,
wherein products for multiple
GE businesses are to be
manufactured.
Through
extensive research conducted
by our technology centers,
this facility will cater to the
growing need to manufacture
locally competitive products
developed specifically for
India.
India’s generating capacity
is expected to grow from the
current capacity of about 228
GW to 310 GW in 2015. With
urbanization, the demand supply gap and complexity of
the grid is increasing,
necessitating an increased
investment in R&D to meet
current challenges and
prepare for the future. Some
of the challenges in
modernization infrastructure,
integrating IT and power
control applications, building
infrastructure for integrating
renewable
technologies,
efficient Demand Side
Management would need
substantial R&D investments

Toshiba corporation keeps adding to its assets in order to increase and strengthen its global position. chairman and
Managing Director, Dr Katsutoshi Toda, of the newly formed company – Toshiba Transmission & Distribution systems
(India) Pvt ltd – lets us in on the plans of the organization in India and at the global level.
A
major portion of Vijai
Electricals Ltd, one of
India’s leading manufacturers of power and distribution transformers, has been
recently acquired by Toshiba
Corporation. Since the acquisition, a new company that
now features the combined
portfolio of both companies
has been formed under the
name of Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems
(India) Pvt Ltd (TTDI).
Chairman and Managing
Director, TTDI, Dr Toda aver-
red, “The business of
Vijai Electricals Ltd has grown
on the strength of the
company’s high quality production capabilities, which
have allowed it to win the top
share in distribution transformers in the Indian market and
create major footholds in both
Europe and Africa. The product and market strength of
Vijai Electricals Ltd combined
with the state-of-the-art technology of Toshiba will be
complementary to Toshiba's
T&D business portfolio.”

and
development (R&D)
is at the heart of the
company’s progress as it
heads toward innovative
advancement of products /
technologies. Following this
mantra, R&D has been the
focus area for GE since over
a century. This has allowed
the company to maintain its
position at the forefront in the
power sector. Talking about
it, Regional Manager –
Digital Energy, South Asia,
GE – Energy Management,
Gagan Kakkar stated, “GE,
through its five research
centers located across the
globe delivers products and
solutions to the power sector
in a consolidated and
optimized way.”
GE strives to foster
innovation and global
collaboration by introducing
cutting edge technologies
that will improve efficiency,
reliability and security of the
world's electrical grids. “The
Global Innovation Center

GE is a leader in the power sector since many years. The secret behind its success lies in the core strategy of the
company – a focus on Research & Development. Here is more on GE’s strategy.
Production base
The new company will serve
as a core production base for
expanding the corporation’s
T&D business. The product
range will see the addition of
high-voltage power transformers and also a new range of
switchgears from 132 kV to
800 kV. The medium voltage
switchgears will include solid
insulated switchgears and vacuum interrupters up to 84 kV.
Additionally, ring main units
of up to 36 kV and compact
substations will also be included in the product range.
“Through the new premise,
manufacturing capacity, especially for high-voltage switchgears, will be increased. We
are also going to position TTDI as a global supply center
for products, sub-assemblies
and components to various
Toshiba manufacturing facilities around the world,” affirmed Dr Toda.
Promising India
Speaking on Toshiba’s plans
for India, Dr Toda remarked,
“Recently, owing to the economic slowdown, investment in
▶ chairman and Managing Director, Toshiba Transmission &
Distribution systems (India) Pvt ltd, Dr Katsutoshi Toda

T&D sector has not been very
positive. The power demand is
growing rapidly in India. We
believe this sector is promising
for long-term investment.
Electric power supply per person in India is very small; as
compared to China, it is only
1/3rd, and it will continue to
increase. For this, TTDI will
cover a full range of voltages
suitable for the Indian market.”
Future forward
TTDI will increase its market share by manufacturing
and supplying customer-focused, world-class products
and services with Japanese
quality from the local factory.
Also, delivery time will considerably come down.
“Our participation in ELECRAMA-2014 will provide us
with the opportunity to inform the customers in India
and abroad that Toshiba has
launched its global manufacturing hub in Hyderabad,”
concluded Dr Toda.

Software Solution for Improved Production and
Data Consistency
Intelligent warehousing solutions have proven to be a boon to reduce complexities faced by logistics service
providers as well as improve supply chain efficiency. Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) that enables
easy handling of heavy loads is a case in point. However, such solutions need to be state-of-the-art and designed
with best-in-class technologies. And this is what EPLAN precisely did to meet the requirements of Godrej Efacec
Automation & Robotics Ltd, which needed a more advanced software solution to design its systems.
A
utomated systems
do not necessarily
simplify work always. At times, these may
add to one’s troubles. It applies to every industry and
it is no different when it comes to warehousing. Hence,
as designers and manufacturers of automated storage
and retrieval systems,
Godrej Efacec Automation
& Robotics Ltd needed a
more advanced software solution to design its systems.
In particular, the company
was looking for standardization of electrical design and
enhanced report generation
– bill of materials (BOM).
An improved process for establishing electrical engineering was essential, requiring several issues to be
addressed.
The software needed to
include automatic generation of test plan for control
panels and project process
documents consisting of
pre-requisites for the commissioning engineer to take
over from the installation
engineer. Moreover, project
process documents that
consisted of the activity plan
(site time sheet and schedules) were required for the
commissioning engineer.
Automatic creation of
standard guidelines for
mounting specific sensors
and devices on the equipment was another requirement. These would be used
by the mechanical department to carry out the mounting designs and electromechanical assembly-wise
BOM needed by the installation department.
The need for standardization of the IO-addressing of
PLC for specific equipment
type and the graphical representation of sensor/devices
on the drawings resulted in
Godrej Efacec opting for
EPLAN software solution.
EPLAN implementation
Before
implementing
EPLAN, Godrej Efacec first
identified and listed immediate requirements. These
included electrical drawings, reports for the various departments and the
functional and operational
document list with reference
to various field electrical
components. During the implementation stage, appropriate training in the various
EPLAN tools ensured that
the engineers working on
the drafting and standardization activities could make
effective use of the EPLAN
software. The tool was also
useful as a ready reference
on equipment operation
modes and troubleshooting
guide through incorporation of ‘project-documents’
drawings.
Impact on engineering
productivity
A number of objectives
that initially motivated
Godrej Efacec to opt for
EPLAN have been realized,
the principal benefit being a
70 per cent time reduction
in electrical engineering
along with data consistency.
It helped in improving engineering
productivity
through standardization of
electrical design (equipment-wise), accuracy in
electrical BOM and ensuring better control over projects. The continued success
of the solution has motivated the company to increase
productivity and augment
cost savings by implementing engineering solutions
for other allied industries
including panel engineering
and panel building.
EPLAN has proven to be
a good tool for generating
electrical drawings with
component reports, and the
macros, placeholder object,
reports filter and export to
PDF option that came with
the solution made it possible to increase production
even further. Having achieved 90 per cent of data consistency in the overall
EPLAN documentation,
Godrej Efacec is now planning to use more of EPLAN’s
resources. The plan includes
launching of connectivity
interface with ERP and the
purchase of additional
add-on module EPLAN Engineering Center One, management/execution, and
reduction in overall engineering cost.

Time Switch
Finder has developed an
innovative,
easily
programmable time switch,
which employs a unique
digital program to calculate
sunrise and sunset times by
simply entering the location’s
postcode with a single
joystick. With ever increasing
pressures to reduce energy
consumption, this time switch
controls lighting, heating/
cooling
and
humidity
equipment in commercial,
residential and industrial
applications wherever sunrise
and sunset times are critical in
determining
operational
times.
Switch’s
microcontroller allows a precise
calculation of seasonal sunrise
and sunset times through date
and location coordinates. It is
also programmable using
geographical coordinates.
For added flexibility, the
output switching can be
advanced or retarded about
the calculated sunrise (or
sunset) time in 10-minute
increments—up
to
a
maximum of 90 minutes. A
manual override of the output
status allows for maintenance
or one-off events.

F
ields like manufacturing and engineering are always connected to
words like ‘technical’, ‘incomprehensible’, ‘boring’, etc., because of
which, one does not usually see off-the-shelf magazines or TV
programs addressing the latest happenings in the sectors.
There is a misconception amongst people that industrial sectors such as
oil & gas, pharmaceutical, waste management, manufacturing, etc., are
unspectacular and unpopular. Hence, working in a job that deals with any
of these sectors usually implies that one has to be extremely academically
inclined to be able to work in them. And in a male-dominated world
wherein women are expected to follow stereotypical roles, we meet a bunch
that does not conform to the norm.
These women are working behind the scenes to help promote ‘unglamorous’
sectors in order to make available the latest happenings to the right audience.
Managing Director, NürnbergMesse India Pvt Ltd, Sonia Prashar heads a
team that organizes tradeshows world over. They work meticulously to set
up a platform with an ideal environment for industry experts and end-users
to network, discuss challenges and solutions and also witness the best in
technology available. Similarly, the right print media makes available, on
a frequent basis, the most relevant information about the technological
world.
The team at Vogel Business Media India presents, on a regular basis,
valuable magazines that offer the latest updates on technology, manufacturing
practices, and process related information for various sectors. Working as
a catalyst to get the attention to the right people, the team works devotedly
with a common goal — creating opportunity through awareness.
Kudos and Thank You!
