Environmental simulation testing by TÜV SÜD –
quality assurance with many benefits
In everyday use, technical equipment
and products are often exposed to
massive climatic and mechanical stresses.
They often have to function perfectly
in heat, cold, damp, wind and weather.
Transportation of a device or a product
– whether built-in or as freight – also
involves risks which may cause damage
or failure.
Environmental and transport simulation
testing by TÜV SÜD Product Service verifies
the fitness for use of components, technical
equipment and products and simulates even
the most extreme conditions.
Life cycle and qualification tests prove
the reliability of your products, help to
identify weaknesses, and initiate product
improvements at an early stage. They give
you, the manufacturer, the chance to launch
a robust and reliable product in the market
despite massive time pressure. The benefits,
in addition to enormous time savings, include
reduced warranty costs and the opportunity

of offering longer warranty periods while
reducing production costs and improving
production safety.
TÜV SÜD Product Service supports you by
providing cutting-edge test facilities, short
testing times, and in-depth consulting to
ensure the success of your products on
national and international markets – quickly
and reliably.
Your benefits:
• identification and prevention of faults
and errors right from the design and
development stage
• confidence in the product owing to
third-party certification
• reduced exposure to product liability
• reduced production costs
• opportunity of offering long warranty
periods
• improved product safety and reliability
at low cost
• cross-sector expertise of
experienced experts

Transport simulation testing
Especially highly sensitive equipment,
such as expensive medical devices, should
survive any transport without damages.
TÜV SÜD’s testing laboratories therefore
simulate methods of transport from trucks
to rockets. Even loading is simulated.
These simulations are also crucial for built-in
equipment, such as measuring instruments
for installation in many different means of
transport including cars, motorbikes, trains,
ships and helicopters.
Packaging tests
Packaging protects products and must
therefore often withstand the most stressful
conditions. To test the sturdiness of packages,
the TÜV SÜD experts apply special simulation
and test methods, determining, for example,
your product’s fragility to provide you with
a basis for deciding on the appropriate
level of packaging protection. This does not
only reduce the risk of damage to goods in
0028_Umweltsimulation_6-Seiter_eu.indd 5
transit, but may also include considerable
cost savings. Even large-size packaging
on europallets can easily be tested on our
shakers with a 1,500 x 1,500 mm slip table.
Ingress Protection (IP) testing
The degree of protection provided by an
enclosure may be crucial for equipment
functioning. TÜV SÜD Product Service offers
IP testing and certification according to
the IP Code, e.g. IP 65 (EN 60529, ISO 20653,
DIN 40050) focusing on ingress protection
against water and dust.
Combined testing – in a single cycle
In real-life operations, climatic and
mechanical stresses act simultaneously
on a product. Hence, combined simulation
makes perfect sense for many products:
Cars, for example, must be able to withstand
a cold start on a freezing winter morning,
but also driving at scorching midsummer
temperatures.

Testing in accordance with standards and
test tailoring to ensure global compliance
Different standards and regulations in
different countries and markets must be
complied with. TÜV SÜD Product Service
is thoroughly familiar with these rules
and ensures that your products comply
with national and international standards,
including DIN, ISO, ICE, EN, various factory
standards, or the American Military Standard
MIL-STD if required. In case your product
is not subject to any of these standards,
TÜV SÜD Product Service will develop a
special test customized to your needs
(test tailoring), giving you the certainty of
complying with all relevant legal
requirements and the chance to reap the
sales promotion benefit of certification.
HALT /HASS tests – accelerated life testing
HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Test) and
HASS (Highly Accelerated Stress Screening)
tests offer manufacturers an ultra-fast
method of identifying any weaknesses in
their products.
HALT testing
HALT testing takes only two to five days.
Accelerated artificial ageing reveals any
weaknesses in your product.
0028_Umweltsimulation_6-Seiter_eu.indd 6
Integration of HALT testing into
product design and development
offers numerous benefits:
• early identification of design and
production flaws
• evaluation and optimization of
design margins
• shorter development time
• elimination of design problems
before the start of production
• certainty of a product’s market
maturity at market launch
HASS testing
HASS testing ensures that the defects
identified in HALT testing have been
effectively eliminated. Non-conforming
products are filtered out in a special test
cycle.
Integration of both tests is sensible and
enables you to assess the impacts of
product modifications – not least with
respect to costs.
Our experience speaks for itself: TÜV SÜD
Product Service has been operating the first
independent HALT/HASS test lab and one
of the largest HALT chambers in Europe
since 1988.

Simulation of all environmental conditions
Temperature and climate –
from Siberia right to the Amazon
Temperature simulations and climatic testing
are particularly important for equipment,
products, and components that will be used
in extreme environments. Especially in some
applications such as aircrafts and other
vehicles, this is crucial as full functionality
of individual components may prevent
disasters and must therefore be guaranteed
in all possible climatic conditions.
Simulation of mechanical stresses –
from car transport to earthquake
“Shakers” (electrodynamic vibration test
equipment) simulate mechanical stresses
to which products may be exposed, for
example when used in a helicopter or
subjected to earthquake-like shocks.
Their wide frequency range and ability
to simulate a wide variety of different
mechanical stresses, including high-impact
shock, guarantee the required versatility.
Freezing temperatures of –70 °C, tropical
conditions at temperatures of +55 °C and
a relative humidity of 95 %, extreme heat
of up to +220 °C – TÜV SÜD’s temperature
chambers simulate even the most extreme
climatic conditions.
Shock and vibration testing
The importance of simulating mechanical
stresses during product design and
development can be demonstrated by
various examples. Equipment in a nuclear
power plant, for example, must withstand
the shocks of a strong earthquake. Radar
systems of airport towers must function
flawlessly even in heavy gusts of wind.
Last but not least, consumers also expect
most everyday products to continue
functioning properly even after being
dropped.
Thermal shock test chambers simulate
product ageing within seconds by rapid
thermal cycling from cold to heat, at a
temperature range between -70 °C and
+220 °C.
Corrosive conditions (road traffic in winter,
overseas transport) are simulated in two
1,000-liter salt-spray chambers.
