I am delighted to welcome the many guests who will be attending our Ball this evening and make it
possible to continue to build the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the USA. I would also like to thank
all my colleagues from Boston, Atlanta, Connecticut, Minnesota, Washington, DC, New York and New
Jersey who have worked diligently in building ICCUSA.
The links across the Atlantic have always been strong and the cooperation in business, education, politics and culture make a great difference in the lives of people of Ireland, both north and south. I would
like to congratulate tonight’s very exceptional recipients who have dedicated themselves and set an
example for future leaders within both communities. Hard work pays dividends.ICCUSA is proud to
announce the 20th Annual American Celtic Ball. Specifically, we are honored to have Peter Sutherland
as our Lifetime Achievement Awardee and Keynote Speaker. We are also equally proud to have three
other outstanding honorees: M.Laurent Beaudoin, Chairman, Bombardier Inc, Robert E. Grady, Managing Director, The Carlyle Group and Liam O’Mahony, Chief Executive, CRH plc.
It’s very much worth noting that Mr. Beaudoin of Bombardier represents the first ever Canadian
company to be the International Recipient of the Sir Michael Smurfit Business Achievement Award.
I would also like to welcome IDA, Enterprise Ireland, Tourism Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland and
friends from Trinity College and Smurfit Business School. I would like to commend the magnificent
job they have done over the years in creating tremendous success and I look forward to the years ahead.
It has been a great pleasure to work with the dinner chairmen, Mark Pigott, Ned Cloonan, John Paul
Macdonald, Sir George Quigley, Pat Moore, Patrick Durkin and of course Denis O’Brien. Without the
support of the recipients, dinner chairmen, co-chairmen, and our growing membership, tonight’s event
wouldn’t be possible.
We are delighted to announce this evening our newly formed ICCUSA Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3)
not-for-profit corporation, which has launched Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership For Life, a youth training program. This compelling, dynamic program is dedicated to creating the world of tomorrow by
providing benchmark leadership training to those who will lead it. ASLFL is committed to developing
and presenting the most comprehensive leadership and mentoring programs for high school age youth
around the globe. Within this program ASFL has partnered with Foroige – Ireland’s Leading National
Youth Development Organization, making them ASLFL’s Joint Venture Partner for the Island of Ireland.
We would like to thank our members, particularly AIG for their generous support of our Governor’s
Breakfast, annual American Celtic Ball and for our various annual supporters of our Annual Summer
Outing at the K-Club. A special thanks to all our other sponsors and supporters throughout the year.
As always ICCUSA is proud to support Boys Hope Girls Hope; tonight’s net proceeds of the silent auction will benefit them. In addition, we are proud to support CONCERN Worldwide, Irish Arts Center, CINI-USA and others. All in all tonight promises to be a very special evening, one that acknowledges the amazing leadership and business acumen of our Honorees and further highlights the positive
trajectory that Ireland and Northern Ireland continue to travel.
Thank you for your continued support in 2008 and we look forward to a tremendously positive 2009.

the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the United States, Inc.
Since colonial times, a unique bond between Massachusetts
and Ireland has fostered and flourished. Many Irish came to our
shores, started a new life and made profound contributions in
education, business and public service. The ICCUSA continues to
strengthen this bond by promoting business relationships between
our countries.
Tonight we honor outstanding Irish Americans who have made
great contributions to their communities. I congratulate those
honored, M. Laurent Beaudoin, Robert E. Grady, Liam O’Mahony,
and Peter Sutherland.
Please accept my best wishes for an enjoyable evening.
Best regards,
Belfast, Northern Ireland

He worked in design and project management in Ireland and the UK
before joining CRH in 1971 as a Development Manager. Having

CRH’s Irish and US companies, Liam became Chief Operating Officer
of Oldcastle, Inc. in 1989, the holding company for CRH’s North
American operations. Appointed Managing Director Republic of
Ireland and UK Group companies in 1991, he joined the CRH Board

Since its foundation in 1970, following the merger of two major Irish companies –
Irish Cement and Roadstone, CRH has delivered consistently high levels of performance and
growth. The company is now a leading international building materials group operating
in 34 countries, employing approximately 92,000 people at over 3,500 locations. This
achievement comes from the implementation of a clear strategy: concentration on three
closely related core businesses – primary materials, value-added building products and
building materials distribution; and a balanced geographical and product base. The
continuing success of CRH is reflected in the long term growth in total shareholder
value – averaging around 18% per annum since 1970.

T
wenty years ago, few individuals realized that there was no
Chamber of Commerce representing Ireland in the United
States and vice-a-versa to open the doors for US companies
in Ireland. The decision took place to form the Ireland Chamber of Commerce at a time when Ireland’s unemployment was at
over 20% and basically it was an agricultural and tourist driven
economy.
Over the last decade that has changed dramatically and the American investment in Ireland has been one of the driving forces. However, we all realize that by capitalizing on the most educated young
people in Europe, opportunities would lie ahead. It is interesting
to know now that Ireland is the 9th largest customer for American
products and services.
Added to this there are equally the same number of Americans employed in Irish companies based in America as there are American
companies based in Ireland. We would like to feel that we played some
small part in this success story. Our objectives are:

ICCUSA Foundation, Inc.
Launches Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership For Life
Maurice A. Buckley, President and CEO of
ICCUSA announced that ICCUSA Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit
corporation, has launched Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership
For Life youth training
program. This compelling, dynamic program
is dedicated to creating
the world of tomorrow
by providing benchmark leadership training to the next generation of aspiring leaders.
ASLFL is committed to
developing and presenting the most comprehensive
leadership and mentoring programs for high school age youths around
the globe.
Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership For Life will
focus on stressing the achievement of the organization’s five measurable program goals:
To cultivate within the participants
• a passion for community service
• an understanding and appreciation of multiculturalism
• an understanding that we must be good
stewards of the environment without unduly compromising the needs, wants and
expectations of those who inhabit the globe
To teach the participants
• strategic thinking and problem solving
methodologies and
• group and interpersonal communication
skills.
Through a series of professionally prepared and presented regional seminars, on
line learning opportunities, instructional
DVD’s, virtual in school conferences and
national and international seminars, Albert
Schweitzer’s Leadership For Life will motivate kids of all ethnicities, races, religions
and socio-economic backgrounds to become
engaged in this great odyssey of on-going
leadership training; very unique leadership
training that will prepare them to lead their
generation into a more civilized, more responsible world free of bigotry and bias. Plans
48 American Celtic Ball
call for a several thousand US high school
students to be enrolled in the 2009 United
States program that will be presented
at sites around the country this
coming spring. This inaugural program will culminate
in a national conference
that will be held next
summer.
Named after the great
physician, humanitarian and Nobel prize
winner, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, with the personal
blessing of his daughter,
Rhena Schweitzer Miller, Albert Schweitzer’s Leadership For
Life is unique and compelling among present day youth leadership training programs
as it is committed to providing a continuum
of mentoring based instruction to participating students after they have matriculated
through the structured, in-person training.
ASLFL will do this by maintaining an active
alumni society to which it will provide an on
line library, quarterly newsletter, web based
virtual conferences, and an ever expanding
DVD lecture series hosted by mentors renowned nationally and internationally for
their expertise and achievements in the arts,
sciences, business, engineering, education
and every other pertinent discipline.
In announcing the launch, Buckley said that
“this new initiative will help to fulfill the
ICCUSA Foundation’s primary goal of promoting cross-cultural exchanges between
the people of Ireland, Northern Ireland and
other people of Celtic origins and the people
of the United States through youth leadership training programs in these various locales.” Mr. Buckley pointed out that during
a recent Dublin meeting with Sean Campbell, the CEO of Ireland’s National Youth
Development Organization, (Foroige), it
was agreed that Foroige would become
ASLFL’s Joint Venture Partner for the Island of Ireland and will co-host the international Albert Schweitzer Leadership For
Life seven day conference at Trinity College in July 2009. Foroige is Ireland’s largest
youth development organization, providing
services to over 50,000 youth per year. This
conference to be attended by participating
students from Ireland, Northern Ireland,
England and the United States will provide
the youngsters with a unique cross-cultural
experience that will forever expand their understanding and appreciation of contemporaries from other cultural backgrounds.
It should be noted that ICCUSA’s formal
expansion into the youth leadership training
arena is a natural extension of the Chamber’s
long time commitment to the young people
of our world. For more than 15 years, Mr.
Buckley and ICCUSA have been very supportive of and involved in youth leadership
programs.
Key Staff: Martin D. Pallante, Ph.D. the
retired CEO of Roehlen Industries, university instructor, management consultant and
Founding Member of ICCUSA will serve
as the Chairman and CEO of ASLFL.
Christopher McCarty, a 15 year HOBY
volunteer and former president, is now the
Chief Operating Officer of ASLFL. Matt
McCoy, 2007 ICCUSA Celtic Ball Honoree
and well-known Hollywood film and TV actor and director, will serve as ASLFL’s high
profile spokesman, mentor and Ambassador-at-Large. Mr. McCoy, best known for
his starring roles in The Hand That Rocks
the Cradle and L.A. Confidential, as well as
starring roles in the Police Academy films,
and on Seinfeld, where he created the role
of Lloyd Braun, has a long established, passionate commitment to youth and public
service.

The Bradley Touch
Terry Bradley
Artist, entrepreneur and proud
son of Ireland
Terry Bradley & Brendan McGinn (BJM Global) with
Kathleen Kennedy Townsend
Born in Belfast in 1965 Bradley’s early work
was inspired by the ten years he lived and
worked in Dublin in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s. His
distinctive line drawings and atmospheric
paintings capture the mood of many of Dublin and Belfast ‘s most memorable nightclubs
and bars. Many of his paintings from this
time show strong, confident women from
the modelling and fashion world that he
mixed in. They reflect the two sides of Terry’s
life - hard images of an after-dark nightlife
in the city’s clubs and bars and a more gentle
view of women after a dance performance.
The two sides reflect the conflict in Bradley’s
personality and art, with his self-confessed
manic, dark side at odds with calmer more
gentle periods. Bradley’s creative eye then
turned to the Burlesque dancers of Europe’s
Belle Epoque before he travelled to NY and
studied and painted the Burlesque Dancers
he mingled with there.
BJM Chartered Accountants
Belfast* Dublin
Burlesque, New York.
Bradley has now turned his attention on
his own country once more and for the first
time has concentrated his paintings on men,
depicting characters based on Ireland’s hardworking docker industry and the Sailortown
area around Belfast which saw it’s heyday
over 100 years ago and culminated with the
building of the White Star’s magnificent Titanic. With a working title of Heroes and
Villains these new pieces show a proud and
rugged face of the men who built and worked
in the famous sea ports of both Dublin and
Belfast.
Terry’s artistic style is dominated by bold,
individual images of people and faces that
have an innate sense of purpose and that
exude charisma. Vibrant colours, purposeful brushwork and exuberant scenarios are
the hallmarks of his work. Collectors often
choose two and three paintings at a time,
unable to decide between such strong pieces
and his work now features in collections in
London, America, Spain and New Zealand.

nightclubs and restaurants.”

property developers in designing a new residence complex Belfast. Terry was approached
to act as consultant artist for the development and has designed the huge glass doors
that stand at the entrance to the development
as well as providing one off pieces of art for
the interiors and acting as a consultant on
the mood colours and lighting of the internal spaces. Terry’s work is now taking him to
America and on the 9th October this year he
will be showing paintings at the prestigious
American Celtic Ball at the Waldorf Astoria
in NYC. Terry said, “This is a big year for
me, I’m very excited about the whole move
into America. Because of my commitments
here I’m only going to be able to show about
three or four large pieces but I want to make
sure it’s something special so I’m putting a lot
of work into it”. Despite being an established
artist for many years now Terry himself feels
he is just starting out and his work is going
from strength to strength. There are exciting
plans for the rest of 2008 and 2009.
“The Eakin Gallery, long associated with traditional Irish art also like to showcase upcoming contemporary artists, one of which has to be
Terry Bradley. His work is instantly recognisable, the style and subject matter unmistakable
in its individuality.
Terry Bradley is unarguably one of the main
movers and shakers in the world of contemporary Irish art.”
Social & Personal, Ireland August 07
“As the birthplace of Van Morrison, C S Lewis,
poet Louis MacNeice, James Galway and Derek
Bell, Belfast offers plenty for the cultural tourist
to admire … The city that gave the world two
of the greatest Irish painters, a place for artists
such as Terry Bradley to be inspired by its spirit
and history.”

The Ireland Chamber United States (ICCUSA)
held its annual summer golf outing at the K-Club
on June 26th. The event consisted of a round of
golf on the Palmer-designed course for nearly
50 guests, subsequently leading to the highlight
of the evening – a private dinner for over 100
guests.
The evening began with ICCUSA’s president
Maurice Buckley offering a gracious welcome to
the guest speaker, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend.
Kennedy Townsend is the former lieutenant
governor of Maryland, former deputy assistant
attorney general of the US, and chairman of
the Robert F Kennedy Memorial. She greatly
impressed the audience with an impassioned and
insightful speech regarding the upcoming United
States presidential election, including some
thoughtful comments about her father, Robert F
Kennedy.
We greatly appreciate and would like to thank
all the supporters of this event who make it a
great success every year. A special thank you to
University College Dublin (UCD), Merrion
Capital, Titanic Quarters, BJM Global, Arthur
