Bridging the Gaps - Virtual Interface Centre between Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science. What is a proposal? The process for submitting a proposal for consideration as an activity to be supported by the Bridging the Gaps initiative is a relatively informal business. Who? A proposal can be sent to or discussed with one of the four members of the academic team: Prof. Alan Champneys, Dr Christian Allen, Dr Raphael Clifford or Dr Yves Tourigny, or with the project manager Lindsey Gaunt. How? Please do discuss your idea with a member of the team, but it will also be helpful if you put your concept down in an e-mail to bridging-the-gaps@bristol.ac.uk. What? To enable your proposal to be assessed, please supply some or all of the following information, as appropriate. This needs only be brief, i.e half to one page. 1. Describe the type of event you would like to organise (interdisciplinary workshop, speed dating event, discovery away-day, research retreat etc). New mechanisms for stimulating cross-disciplinary research are being sought, so be inventive. 2. A title and a description of the focus of the event, and the disciplines that it crosses. Events should cross at least two of the disciplines (Mathematics, Engineering, Information and Computer Science) and (ideally) fit within one of the four loosely defined research themes; A) Uncertain Systems, B) Pure Mathematics and Algorithms, C) Media and Materials and D) Computational Science. 3. List the individuals or groups that you want to target or invite. Involvement can be from UK academia and industry, and overseas academics. 4. An estimated cost, and whether you are requesting your time to be bought out of any researching or administration duties. 5. Any other information that you consider to be relevant, such as a proposed venue, date, expected outcomes or the size and duration of the event. When? Proposals will be received at any time, and should receive consideration within a month. If you need a more immediate response, then discuss your requirements directly with one of the academic leads. What happens next? Should your proposal get the green light to proceed, the Project Manager (Lindsey Gaunt) will contact you to discuss scheduling and organising the activity. In this case there may be some more detail that is required before the activity can be supported. In this case one of the team will discuss this with you.
