TECHNICAL DATA SHEET BOSTIK SUPER GASKET Description BOSTIK SUPER GASKET is a neutral curing black polymeric sealant which cures on exposure to atmospheric moisture to a tough, flexible elastomeric silicone rubber capable of withstanding temperature extremes (-60°C to +300°C) and resisting water, mineral oil, transmission fluid, and anti-freeze. It is also excellent for use as an adhesive where an elastic gap filling bond is required Features & Benefits • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Heat resistance up to +300°C (short term exposure) Heat resistance up to +260C (continuous exposure) Non corrosive to metals Suitable for alkaline substrates such as concrete and plaster Will not desilver or discolour mirrors – ideal for mounting of mirrors Low odour – ideal for use in areas with poor ventilation Non-sag – can apply on vertical surfaces Mould resistant – suitable for use in damp areas e.g. showers, bathrooms Flexible at temperatures as low as -60°C Versatile – adheres to a wide variety of substrates Waterproof – suitable for external applications Excellent UV-resistance and abrasion resistance – long lasting durable bond Non-sag – can apply on vertical surfaces Low shrinking on curing Outstanding primerless adhesion to a variety of substrates Unaffected by alcohols, dilute acids and alkalis, soap and household detergents Excellent colour fastness – clear grades are non yellowing Moisture curing system; cure rate is unaffected by low ambient temperatures Resistant to mineral oil, transmission fluid, anti-freeze, petrol and alcohol Applications • • • • • • Formulated to replace cork, felt, rubber and asbestos gaskets Can be applied to numerous areas, such as axle covers, bearing cap seals, fuel pumps to blocks, intake manifolds, keyway slots, oil filter housing to blocks, window gaskets and seals, bearing plate gasket, engine base gasket, tappet covers, valve covers, water pumps and associative housings It is also suitable to be used in place of lamp cover gaskets, lamp housing gaskets, to seal ignition units and cable entry points FIPG (Formed In Place Gasketing) and CIPG (Cure In Place Gasketing) applications Repairs in ovens Can be used as an adhesive where an elastic gap filling bind is required Adhesion BOSTIK SUPER GASKET adheres to all types of alloys and metal used in engine and motor construction BOSTIK SUPER GASKET exhibits excellent primerless adhesion to many non-porous materials e.g. ceramics, glass, enamel, porcelain, coated wood, painted surfaces, epoxide, canvas, rubber, most metals (mild steel, aluminium, lead, copper, tin, galvanized iron, brass or zinc) and some plastics (acrylics, polyester, polyacrylate, polycarbonates, polystyrene, fiberglass, formica, and rigid PVC) BOSTIK SUPER GASKET can be used on alkaline surfaces such as concrete, fibrous cement, mortar, asbestos and plaster For more information on adhesion, refer to our “Silicone Adhesion Chart” leaflet PJ/D181/Issue 04/Sept 2010/Super Gasket Page 1 of 4 Next Revision: Sept 2014 TECHNICAL DATA SHEET Limitations BOSTIK SUPER GASKET should not be immersed in petrol BOSTIK SUPER GASKET should not be used in an attempt to replace composite cylinder head gaskets, especially where tolerances are predetermined and are critical to engine performance BOSTIK SUPER GASKET CANNOT be over-painted Safety Instructions When working with uncured BOSTIK SUPER GASKET, it is advisable to wear gloves in order to avoid direct contact with the skin. During curing, methanol is released. Work in a ventilated area. If BOSTIK SUPER GASKET comes in contact with skin or eyes, flush thoroughly and immediately with water. If irritation continues, seek medical attention Cured silicone rubber can be handled without any health risk Keep out of reach of children! Refer to our Material Safety Data Sheets for further toxicological information and comprehensive handling instructions Surface preparation The surface coming into direct contact with the BOSTIK SUPER GASKET must be clean, dry, free from all loose materials, dust, dirt, oil, rust and any other contaminants Non-porous substrates such as metals, glass and plastics should be degreased with a solvent. Plastics can be lightly abraded with emery paper Soaps or detergents used to clean the surface must be rinsed away thoroughly with clean water to ensure that all traces of the soaps are removed before sealing. Use back-up material where needed (see Application Notes) Poor surface preparation may result in the delamination of the silicone Directions for Use • • • • • • Ensure that surfaces are prepared as above Remove the cap from the tube and pierce film with reverse side of cap to break the seal. Cut the tip off the nozzle to achieve the desired bead size and screw nozzle on to the tube Squeeze the tube and apply the silicone at a slight angle in the direction of use. After use, remove the nozzle, wipe clear and replace the cap firmly to avoid any air from entering the tube Sealant skins in 25 minutes, dries to touch in 1 hour and reaches full cure after approximately 24 hours Use masking tape to get a clean, even sealant line and to eliminate cleaning difficulties on porous surfaces. Be sure to remove the tape before sealant begins to skin Smooth down after application (within 3-5 minutes) before skin formation occurs, by using a flat or rounded tool, or even a finger, dipped in soapy water Cleaning • • • • Uncured silicone can easily be removed from the hands or tools using a clean solvent soaked cloth, e.g. turpentine or paraffin. If removing uncured silicone from clothing, check fabric colourfastness before applying the above mentioned solvents Sealant dries to touch in 1 hour and reaches full cure after approximately 24 hours. Fully cured sealant can be removed by mechanical means, i.e. with a sharp knife or chemically, with BOSTIK SILICONE STRIPPER If the area being sealed needs to be painted, ensure that the paint has dried COMPLETELY before sealing with BOSTIK SUPER GASKET PJ/D181/Issue 04/Sept 2010/Super Gasket Page 2 of 4 Next Revision: Sept 2014 TECHNICAL DATA SHEET Storage Stability BOSTIK SUPER GASKET has a shelf life of at least 12 months if stored in a cool (below 25°C), dry place in it’s original moisture-tight container If the material is kept beyond the recommended shelf life, it is not necessarily unusable, but a check should be performed to observe whether the product is still workable, apply-able and uncured To maximize the shelf life of the opened cartridge, store in a cool environment after creating an airtight environment by wiping down the tube opening and placing a piece of plastic over it and screwing on the nozzle Product packaging 90ml tube Product Data i.
