Silicone Sealants – Bostik Technical Data Sheet BOSTIK MIRROR Characteristics BOSTIK® MIRROR is a neutral-curing, low modulus 100% silicone sealant with outstanding adhesion that gives a permanent flexible bond for mirrors to painted surfaces, plaster, metal and wood. Features • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Acid free – will not desilver or discolour mirrors Non-sag Low odour Outstanding primerless adhesion to a variety of substrates Suitable for alkaline substrates such as concrete, plaster, fibrous concrete Excellent UV-resistance and durability Excellent mould resistance Flexible at low temperatures down to -40°C Heat resistance up to +120°C Low shrinking on curing Abrasion resistant Excellent water-resistance Unaffected by alcohols, dilute acids and alkalis, soap and household detergents Excellent colour fastness Moisture curing system; cure rate is unaffected by low ambient temperatures Non corrosive to metals Applications • • Ideal for mirror installations, bonding mirrors to painted surfaces, plaster, metal and wood In addition, BOSTIK® MIRROR is also suitable for sealing, bonding, and mending tasks in car, boat, caravan, and house, such as: o Sealing around bathroom and kitchen fittings o Sealing around oven doors, boards, signs, insulating appliances o Sealing of connecting and expansion joints in walls and floors o Sealing of gutters, gutter outlets and around building flashes o Perimeter sealing of doors, windows and cladding panels o Insulating electrical appliances Adhesion BOSTIK® MIRROR exhibits excellent primerless adhesion to many non-porous materials e.g. ceramics, glass, enamel, porcelain, coated wood, painted surfaces, canvas, rubber, many metals (stainless steel, aluminium, lead, copper, tin, galvanized iron, brass or zinc) and some plastics (epoxide, polyester, polyacrylate, formica, fiberglass, acrylics, polycarbonates and rigid PVC). BOSTIK® MIRROR can be used on alkaline surfaces such as concrete, fibrous cement, mortar, asbestos, plaster and substrates such as marble and stone. PJ/D181/Issue 02/August MC/Revision 00/June 2005 Page 1 of 4 Uncontrolled Copy Restrictions on use BOSTIK® MIRROR used in contact with marble, granite, quartzite and similar natural stone, may cause staining. May become discoloured in contact with some organic elastomers, which tend to bleed oil or solvents into the silicone, e.g. EPDM, APTK, Neoprene and Bituminous surfaces. Will not adhere to some plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene and Teflon. CANNOT be over-painted. NOT SUITABLE FOR FISH TANKS (contains a fungicide). Do not apply sealant when relative humidity is below 10% - cure rate will be affected. Safety instructions When working with uncured BOSTIK® MIRROR, it is advisable to wear gloves in order to avoid direct contact with the skin. During curing, methanol is released. These vapours should not be inhaled for long periods or in high concentrations. Consequently, work in a ventilated area. If BOSTIK® MIRROR comes in contact with skin or eyes, flush thoroughly and immediately with water. If irritation continues, seek medical attention. Cured silicone rubber can be handled without any health risk. Refer to our Material Safety Data Sheets for further toxicological information and comprehensive handling instructions. Surface preparation The surface coming into direct contact with BOSTIK® MIRROR must be clean, dry, free from all loose materials, dust, dirt, oil, rust and any other contaminants. Non-porous substrates such as metals, glass and plastics should be degreased with a solvent. Plastics can be lightly abraded with emery paper. On no account must any type of alcohol be used for surface cleaning – alcohols inhibit the cure of silicones. Ensure also, that if soaps or detergents are used to clean the surface that it is rinsed down thoroughly with clean water to ensure that all traces of the soaps are removed before sealing. As a caution, it should be remembered that poor surface preparation may result in the delamination of the silicone. Directions for use • • • • • • • • Ensure that surfaces are prepared as above. Remove cap from tube and pierce film with reverse side of cap to break seal. Cut tip off nozzle at an angle to achieve the desired bead size and screw nozzle onto tube. Apply silicone in narrow vertical beads. After applying the adhesive, press the mirror onto the surface. Support blocks or adhesive tape must be used to provide initial support until the silicone is fully cured (approximately 48 hours). Uncured silicone can easily be removed from the hands or tools using a clean solvent soaked cloth, e.g. turpentine or paraffin. If removing uncured silicone from clothing, check fabric colourfastness before applying the above-mentioned solvents. When fully cured, sealant can be removed by mechanical means, i.e. with a sharp knife or chemically, with a Silicone Stripper. PJ/D181/Issue 02/August MC/Revision 00/June 2005 Page 2 of 4 Uncontrolled Copy Storage stability BOSTIK® MIRROR has a shelf life of at least 15 months if stored in a cool (below 25°C), dry place in it’s original moisture-tight container. If the material is kept beyond the recommended shelf life, it is not necessarily unusable, but a check should be performed to observe whether the product is still workable, applyable and uncured. To maximize the shelf life of the opened cartridge, it would be advisable to create an airtight environment. This can be achieved by removing the nozzle and wiping down the opening, placing a piece of plastic over it, and finally screwing the nozzle back on. Store in a cool environment. Product Data i.
