screws, provides low drag torque and smooth

steel/nylon lock nuts. The cost effective
plastic nuts are widely used in a variety
of industrial applications requiring such
properties as strength, corrosion resistance,
oil resistance, low weight alternatives and low
thermal conductivity. The working temperature
range is -30 to 100°C.
Magneto’s magnetic field indicators are
designed for the permanent registration
of a magnetic field presence. They can
be used for the identification of tamper
with water meters, watt-hour meters and
gas meters with the use of an external
magnetic field. The one-threshold magnetic
field indicators MFI-3 register a strong
magnetic field coming from neodymium
magnets. The two-threshold indicators
MFI-4 register a magnetic field coming
from ferrite magnets (the first threshold)
and from neodymium magnets (the
second threshold). Both indicators are
manufactured in two versions: to install on
the internal surface of transparent casing
or on the external casing surface of a

AUTOMATION
Software plays a decisive role here too and Awite Bioenergie GmbH relies upon Open Source software,
which is employed on Kontron‘s automation PCs. The decision to use Kontron products was made due to the
supported Embedded Linux for the hardware, the Linux support and the excellent Board Support Packages.
In Germany, there are approximately 4000
biogas plants which - according to data from the
end of 2008 - produced approximately 11 billion
kilowatt hours of electricity, enough for 3 million
households.Besides the delivery and production
of substrate and the routine maintenance jobs
that have to be carried out, the plants are fully
automated and even self-optimizing, provided
that an optional expert system with fuzzy logic
controls the processes during operation. The production of electricity and gas in biogas plants is
a technology in which new insights are constantly being gained and new process optimization is
permanently taking place, in order to increase efficiency - even in existing plants. In that respect
every biogas plant could be compared to a racing

car, which constantly has to be tweaked and
tuned and its motor control continually improved, in order to achieve best results. Awite is also
challenged to deliver the right know-how even
during operation.

basic idea behind Open Source is that a large

Kontron offered a x86 based Panel PC with extensive Linux support. For its first platform, Awite
chose a Kontron Panel PC with Intel Celeron 650
processor, 15“ screen size and Embedded Linux
on a 128 MB compact flash as robust memory
media. In its latest plants, Awite uses the latest
successor Kontron V Panel Express 150 with
1.5 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 1 GByte RAM
and 1 GB CF card, for which Kontron
(along with Board Support Packages)
also offers Runtime Images for eLinux
which are already adapted and compiled. Kontron‘s customers profit from
the reduced amount of time and effort
needed for development and inexpensive Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
Currently, Awite is also evaluating a
slimmer version of the popular OpenSuse Linux distribution and Ubuntu
Linux for the Kontron V Panel Express.

World IPC market hit hard by
economic downturn
The world IPC market, estimated at $1.9
billion in 2008, is forecast to fall by over
$200 million in 2009. A new report from
IMS Research, focused on the world market
for IPCs, projects a revenue decline of over
11% from 2008 to 2009. The largest
regional decrease is expected in EMEA
(Europe, the Middle East and Africa). IMS
Research Senior Analyst, Mark Watson,
commented, “Recovery of the world IPC
market is expected to begin slowly in 2010
as government investment filters through to
industry and confidence amongst users of
IPCs starts to increase. ”
CANopen over Bluetooth
The CAN in Automation (CiA) international
users’ and manufacturers’ group has
established the Special Interest Group
“CANopen via Bluetooth”. In the inaugural
meeting the experts agreed to map the
CANopen communication services such
as service data objects (SDO) and process
data objects (PDO) to the Bluetooth lowerlayers. The group will also specify CANopento-Bluetooth routers, in order to provide
connectivity in heterogeneous network
architectures.
Sensor+Test 2009 final report
According to the show organizers, the
Sensor+Test is staying on its successful
track. This is the conclusion AMA Service
GmbH draws from the results of the visitor
poll. A neutral market research institute
carried out polls during the three days of
the fair regarding the competence and
motivation of the visitors. In a further poll,
the majority of the exhibitors proved to be
clearly satisfied. Although the number of
visitors was slightly lower compared to last
year, the expectations of the exhibitors
at the fair were exceeded. The number of
visitors decreased by 11% compared to
2008.

TEMPERATURE SENSOR
with setting rings for switch point setting
Temperature sensors are used in different industries and applications. One of the classical applications is the
monitoring of liquid circuits in equipment, machines or their components. The wide selection of temperature
sensors ranges from simple Pt100, NTC units, bimetal switches to parameterisable sensors with display. In
some applications, however, easy-to-use sensors are needed.
The company Uhde High Pressure Technologies GmbH from Hagen manufacturers
high-pressure pumps for water jet cutting systems. For water jet cutting a hydraulic pump
produces a pressure of up to 200 bar. The
compressed oil is directed into the hydraulic
cylinder. Here, the oil acts on a piston which
compresses drawn-in process water in the
high-pressure cylinder. This way, the pump
generates a high-pressure water jet of up to
4,000 bar. With this jet it is possible to cut, for
example, 100 mm thick steel at a feed rate of
5 to 10 mm per minute.
When the process water is compressed, the
flow of oil is reduced via the right-left piston
movement at the change point. Because of this
and the friction of the cylinder heat energy is
input into the hydraulic system. „The goal is to
remain below 60 °C at the top of the hydraulic
cylinder because the heat also has an effect on
the high-pressure unit,“ says the Project Manager Dr. Andrzej Karpinski.
When monitoring the hydraulic temperature for
the new generation of high-pressure pumps for
water jet cutting systems, the long-established
company from Hagen uses easy-to-use sensors.
Before this, the company used a mechanical
thermostat. Due to the short sensor length it
could not be installed into the hydraulic tank
from the top. Uhde did not want to install the
sensor from the side to avoid the possibility of
leaks.

pany decided to use the temperature sensor
TK7480 from ifm electronic. TK7480 is one
of the first switching temperature sensors with
intuitive operation: the two radial setting rings
of the sensor allow the user to set the switch
points quickly and precisely.
Even without previous knowledge a machine
operator can adapt the switch points to different ambient temperatures, if necessary. As
the high-pressure pumps are used worldwide,
much higher outside temperatures could require an adaptation of the switch points.
The alternative to the TK unit would be a
Pt100 temperature sensor. However, the user
would have to reprogram the controller to
change the switch points. So changing the
switch points would be much more complex.
Another advantage: „The probe length of 255
mm corresponds to the level of the suction
connection of the hydraulic pump in the tank.
This means that the sensor detects exactly the
temperature the pump is processing and this is
what counts for us,“ says Dr. Andrzej Karpinski and continues: „The sensor has another
advantage concerning installation: for the TK
unit - in contrast to mechanical switches - the
requested switch points can be set via the setting rings without voltage and system temperature being applied.“
The switch points
The two switch points monitor the temperature
of the hydraulic oil.
If the current temperature is below the system
temperature, e.g. before start-up of the highpressure pump, the operator is requested to
carry out a warm-up program via the controller to reach the necessary oil temperature. „As
a result of this the pump first starts with low
pressure. The cooling circuit is switched off
until the system has heated up. The pressure is

Via the second switch point a prealarm is generated as soon as the oil temperature exceeds
the specified values of 60°C in the hydraulic
tank.
If the temperature is exceeded, the display on
the high-pressure pump requests the operator
to check the system once more. Causes for an
error message could for example be dirty radiator ribs. The operator can carry out this check
while the machine is still in operation so that it
is not switched off during the cutting process
but only after the workpiece has been finished.
Bottom line
Water separates with maximum precision and
flexibility more or less independently of the
properties and type of the material. Exactly this
precision is required by Uhde High Pressure
Technologies for the components used for the
high-pressure pumps. The temperature sensor
TK7480 meets these requirements because in
addition to a good setting accuracy and repeatability it has an optimum probe length of 255
mm. Moreover, the switch points can be adapted to the local operating conditions quickly
and easily without previous knowledge. So the
sensor is the optimum choice for monitoring
tasks in hydraulic applications.

Multipoint Mass Flowmeters

M-Series position sensors approved for
operation in safety-related applications. The
sensors meet the requirements of Safety
Integrity Level 2 (SIL2) to EN 61508

sensor head, signals are checked and changes
are detected immediately. The transducer
transmits the position value to the control
system only after the diagnostic test. In this

a high-demand mode of operation. Due to
the SIL2 classification of the sensor, this
corresponds to an average probability of
failure (PFH) in a range from ≥10-7 to < 10-6
per hour.

flowmeters are ISO 14164:1999 (E) Annex

and monitoring in large ducts with irregular

in a rugged enclosure
which, even if an
explosive atmosphere
forms inside the
enclosure and ignites,
the enclosure will
withstand the explosion
and will also prevent the passage of flames
out to the explosive surroundings. These
intrinsically safe positioners from Samson
also benefit from low power consumption and
can be conveniently configured on-site, or by
using HART communication. A single rotary
pushbutton is all that is required for start-up;
turn to select parameters and push to activate
them. This convenient method of operation
is still possible in hazardous areas because
the shaft design of the rotary pushbutton
through the housing is explosion-proof. Also,
the design of the enclosure with its separate
terminal compartment, allows direct cable
entry or connection without spark barriers
for cable conduit systems. An easy-to-read
LCD ensures that relevant data is visible at a
glance.

with Radiometrix’ matching TX3B-869-64
transmitters it can facilitate the simple
implementation of wireless infrastructure
that is capable of supporting speeds of
64kbits/s and transmission ranges up to 75m
in-building or 300m over open ground. The
device has a receive sensitivity of -102dBm
at 1ppm BER for 64kbits/s operation and
-108dBm sensitivity at 1ppm BER for
15kbits/s operation. It incorporates a wide
range RSSI (Received Signal Strength
Indicator) which measures the strength of an
incoming signal over a range of approximately
50dB. This allows assessment of the link
quality and available margin with which the
network can operate, so that a judgment on
what distances can be supported is easy for
the engineer to make. It requires a regulated
5V supply with ripple content of less than
100mV peak-to-peak.
The Sitrans
VP300
positioner is
especially
designed by
Siemens for
use in the
paper, mining
and petroleum industries and was developed
according to SIL guidelines. Air exhausting in
the single-acting device is SIL2 rated. Both
the single-acting and double-acting versions
of the positioner feature aluminum housing
with high protection IP66/NEMA 4x and are
especially resistant to vibrations. A rugged
mechanical Opos interface connection can be
used for fast and simple installation of the
Sitrans VP300. Only two screws are required
on the front of the positioner to attach it to
the drive. The blocking function enabled
by the drive and installation set facilitates
replacement of the positioner during
operation. Another feature is the contact-free
position detection which works according to
the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) principle
and makes the measurements particularly
resistant to magnetic field and temperature
fluctuations.

For indicating
the switching status or for providing visibility
during night-time use, point and ring
illuminated versions in red, green and blue are
available. Different types of contacts offer a
range of permissible switching voltages up to
125VDC/250VAC. All options for the MSM LA
are available in single-pole and double-pole
versions. The latching action switch MSM LA
is available in 19 and 22 mounting diameters
and suitable for use in temperatures ranging
from -40 to 85°C. With an actuating travel
greater than 5mm, the MSM LA is ideal
for use in applications where increased
feedback of switching status is required. The
standard type as well as the versions with ring
illumination and now also point illumination
may be provided with lettering using standard
or customer-specific characters.

DIN-rail or panel mounting, and ease-of-use
with comprehensive menus via software and
push button set-up. The range of drives offers
variable speeds from 0.20 to 55.0kW, single
phase input of 110/230VAC and up to three
phase 230/480VAC. The overall dimensions of
the series allow straightforward space saving
side-by-side fitting in general purpose motor
control applications from 0.20 to 2.2kW
(0.25 up to 3.0Hp).

which may include flame treatment, etching
or roughening, is required before being able
to bond polyolefin substrates. Specially
formulated to eliminate this time consuming
stage, the MB514 polyolefin based hot melt
is particularly suited for use on untreated
surfaces of polyethylene, polypropylene and
combinations of these substrates. The only
required processing steps are melting these
compositions and then applying the molten
hot melt to the surfaces to be bonded.
Excellent bond performance is retained over
a temperature range of -29 to 88°C. The
adhesive is VOC free as it is comprised of
100% solids and contains no solvents. Bond
strengths develop rapidly with no need for
clamps or post cure during assembly.

Chris Hansford
Managing Director at Hansford Sensors
assess the health of any rotating equipment it
can be used across all industry sectors. Traditionally our core strength has been in the Paper
and Power Industries, but with the increasing
requirement for factories to operate 24/7 and
reduce costs, our products are now widely used
in all industrial sectors including Wind Power,
Process, Water and Waste, Mining and Petrochemical, Marine, Automotive, Building Services and Pharmaceutical.
IEN: How do you distribute your products on an
international level?
Hansford: We deal with a wide variety of organizations ranging from internationally-renowned
Systems Integrators, Distributors, Agents, individual Vibration Consulting Companies and
OEMs. We have also recently set up Hansford
Sensors in Krakow, Poland so we can provide a
better service to countries in Eastern Europe.
Our core philosophy is to work closely with all
of our customers to provide cost-effective reliable products, which fully meet their needs.
What we have found works particularly well
for us in the UK market in promoting the sale
of sensors is the cooperation we have built up
with the System Integrators and Vibration Consultants. Now we are successfully repeating
this pattern on other continents and this has
lead to a significant increase in business.
Our flexible approach to manufacture enabling
us to supply urgent products very speedily, our
ability to badge product with individual company logos and part numbers and to provide
specific packaging requirements has helped us
very much with our success in this area.
IEN: How many of the sensors you sell are custom products, how many come actually out of
your existing portfolio?
Hansford: The large proportion of the sensors
that we produce comes out of our existing portfolio. However, through working closely with
our customers there are many occasions where
we make minor modifications to our standard
products e.g. filter settings, mounting thread to
fulfill their exact requirements. A large volume
of our sensors are badged for O.E.M customers. We also have the experience and capacity to design be-spoke vibration sensors, which
accounts for approximately 12% of the sensors
we produce.
IEN: Due to the increasing demands in operational availability, condition monitoring has
become more and more important. Which industries do you serve primarily?
Hansford: Because vibration/condition monitoring is a technique that can be applied to

IEN: Your company is rather young. Could
you please tell us something about its short
history?
Hansford: Hansford Sensors started in November 2006, its aim to be recognized as an International Centre of excellence in Vibration Monitoring. Although a relatively new company,
my staff and I have between us, over 100 years
experience and knowledge of the design and
manufacture of industrial vibration sensors.
IEN: Getting the data from the machines using
Hansford Sensors’ sensors is one thing, interpreting them in order to take action if required
is another. Which hardware do you offer to you
customers in that field?
Hansford: There are two main categories of
vibration sensors that can be used to provide
data for analysis; 4-20mA output sensors that
are interfaced with PLC, SCADA, BMS or similar process monitoring systems, and AC output
sensors for use with data collectors or more
sophisticated on-line systems. Hansford Sensors is in an enviable position in as much as
the entire product range of sensors is compatible with the types of equipment mentioned
above. We manufacture a wide choice of Connection and Switch boxes capable of accepting
anything from 2 to 150 vibration sensor inputs,
and in a variety of finishes and configurations.
The AC outputs can be read by connecting
a Data Collector directly to the Switch Box,
whereas the 4-20mA outputs can be re-transmitted to the PLC or similar system. We have
recently launched our very own portable vibration meter, the HS-620 to enable vibration
readings to be taken.

IEN: Do you offer predictive maintenance services as well?
Hansford: Hansford Sensors offer 24/7 technical support and advice to enable customers to
implement cost-effective, predictive maintenance systems. This includes visits to site to
assess customer requirements and the supply
of complimentary products for trials. However
we have made a conscious decision not to get
involved with installation or data analysis as we
prefer to concentrate on our own area of expertise, this being the design and manufacture of
reliable, cost-effective vibration sensors. The
other predictive maintenance services we prefer to leave to similar experts in these fields.
With our considerable global experience in
this industry we are often in the situation that
we can recommend excellent companies for a
whole range of related services.
IEN: Regarding products for predictive maintenance: Where do you still see potential for
optimization?
Hansford: Technically vibration sensors have
hardly changed for some time. There is howN° 9 - September 2009
ever some development in the field of wireless sensors, although this is still largely in
the infancy stages with research ongoing. The
most significant changes have been in the marketplace. With the cost of sensors reducing,
largely due to economic pressures, and the increasing necessity for industry to operate more
effectively and to constantly reduce production
costs, vibration monitoring is being increasingly used on not only expensive critical plant,
but on far smaller, less costly machinery e.g Air
Handling Units in Building Services and escalators at airports and railway stations. It seems
that vibration sensors will have an increasing
active role in ensuring industry has machinery
that works at its optimum level for the longest
possible time and will provide advanced warning to plant engineers of potential problems to
prevent machinery failure and damage. New
applications will continue to be explored over
the coming years.

Trendsetting hydraulics application for U2 stage
The Belgian company Stageco has constructed
three gigantic, identical stages for the current
U2 360° Tour. High-pressure hydraulics are being used to assemble and dismantle the 230 ton

High pressure thermocouples in LDPE production

of low-density polyethylene
(LDPE) is critical. Consistent,

and controlled. In LDPE synthesis, the thermocouple must withstand extreme operating conditions, including very high process
