The inaugural Winnipeg Folk Festival was held in
1974 as a one-time celebration to mark Winnipeg’s
centennial. The Festival was free and attracted an
estimated audience of 22,000 over the three-day
weekend. While the Festival has grown considerably
since then, 1974 established important roots with the
community that remain strong today.
The Festival’s cumulative attendance now exceeds
80,000 and includes thousands of visitors from
outside of Manitoba and performers from across
North America and the world. The organization
has more than 2,800 dedicated volunteers who
contribute over 56,000 hours of labour each year to
create the magic that is the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival generates $29.4
million in economic activity and creates 281 jobs
for the province of Manitoba. The impact on Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) in Manitoba is estimated
at $14.7 million. The GDP represents the estimated
net economic activity generated from this signature
Manitoba event.*
Over the years, the Winnipeg Folk Festival has evolved
from a one-weekend event to a year round arts
organization and community asset with folk music at
its heart. Today, the Festival presents concerts and
events throughout the year, supports the community
with education and outreach programs, and operates
a music store and performance space in Winnipeg’s
historic Exchange District.
The Winnipeg Folk Festival is a not-for-profit
charitable organization.

our 12th consecutive operating surplus.
In the pages that follow, you will read about
another great year of music programming
both at our signature summer Festival and
throughout the year at venues around our
city. You will also read about the Festival’s
many other initiatives, education programs,
community outreach, exhibitions, family
programming and our efforts to promote
environmental sustainability through our
work.
Winnipeg is a community where an organization like the Winnipeg Folk
Festival can thrive. We enjoy strong, ongoing support of public funding
agencies, donors, sponsors and patrons and a wonderful team of dedicated
volunteers who, year after year, contribute their time and passion.
You will see that we have begun
implementation of the second phase of our
site redevelopment plan initiative, revitalizing the Festival’s site to improve
audience, artist and volunteer experience as we prepare for our upcoming
40th Winnipeg Folk Festival. And of course you will find the financial

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
As the new Executive Director, I am so excited to now
be working with the Winnipeg Folk Festival. As one of
the longest running and most well-respected festivals in
the country, it’s an honour to make the move from being
an audience member to joining this incredible team of
dedicated staff, board and volunteers.
Big thanks go out to Carolyn Basha, Chris Frayer and
Arwen Helene, who took on extra responsibility and
stepped up to be the management team in the absence
of an executive director. We have to thank them for their
leadership as well as everything they’ve shared with me to
make me feel welcome.
Our board, staff and volunteers also deserve huge kudos
as they’re the ones who make the Festival and all of our
year round operations continue to run so incredibly well.
As we near the end of our Staging the Future Capital
Campaign, our patrons and supporters – donors and
sponsors – will see the results of everything we’ve been
working towards and we’re excited to share these new
changes with our audience.
Looking back at our 39th year, we have much to celebrate.
We are a strong organization that continues to be
financially stable and raises the standards of volunteerism
and environmental sustainability. I’m thrilled to be a part
of it!

A GLANCE
Highlights
Folk Festival in the City
This year, our annual fall fundraiser
shifted gears – we retired our Wassail
in favour of a new theme that brings
the feel of the Winnipeg Folk Festival
to the city. With kettle corn, program
book covers as table markers and
other Festival-themed décor, this
sellout event raised $49,000 for our
education and outreach programs.
Staging the Future
Our generous community continues
to support our efforts and we’ve
raised over $5 million to date for
our site redevelopment project. These
funds will help us to make significant
improvements to the Festival site over
the next two years including a new
Festival village, entrance and egress
infrastructure, two new forest stages,
as well as shade, water and electrical
upgrades.

Province of Manitoba
raises the Banjo-meter
During the 2012 Festival the Province
of Manitoba made a special
announcement at the Festival site with
a gift of $650,000 to our Staging
the Future campaign. The Province’s
support will provide investment in the
festival campground including shade
structures, lighting and electricity
upgrades, increased water access,
tree planting and improvements to
pathways.

through an intimate performance and
the unique opportunity of a Q & A
with a professional musician.
On May 28th an intimate concert with
Blue Rodeo front man Jim Cuddy was
held at the Franco Manitoban Cultural
Centre for our capital campaign
supporters.

Artistic Achievement Award
We were pleased to honour Sarah
Harmer with the 2012 Artistic
Achievement Award at Folk Festival in
the City in November. Sarah’s talent
and history with the Festival along
with her dedication to environmental
causes align with our core values,
making her the perfect choice to
receive this year’s award.

Travel Manitoba’s
Event of the Year Award
Presented at the 14th Annual Travel
Manitoba Tourism Awards, we
received recognition for excellence in
the promotion and delivery of quality
tourism experiences in Manitoba with
the Event of the Year Award.
Glass Banjo Awards
Each year, the Festival honours one
individual and one organization who
have made a significant contribution
to the Festival. This year’s Glass Banjo
Awards were presented to Sound Art
and site crew member Gord Finch.
Sound Art has been providing audio
equipment for the Winnipeg Folk
Festival since 1993. Whether we
added more stages, expanded the
length of the Festival or grew year
round programming, Sound Art has
always been there to ensure that the
professional sound quality expected
for the event is at the highest level.
Gord Finch, affectionately known to
his Festival friends as “Sparky,” joined
the Festival team in 2001 as the site
electrician. Since then, he has worked
tirelessly to ensure every area of the
Festival is powered up and ready to
operate. His love for and commitment
to the Festival keeps him coming back
every year.

SITE REDEVELOPMENT
2012-13 focused on laying the groundwork for implementing Phase Two of our Site
Redevelopment Project. Through careful planning and consultation with a variety
of stakeholders, including Birds Hill Provincial Park, the front-of-house areas of the
Festival will see a $1.6 million overhaul in time for the 2013 Festival. This will
include:

a Festival Village that will serve as a gathering place and hub for key services;
permanent food kiosks for 18 vendors;
a tower that will soar high in the air and act as a meeting point;
two new forest stages;
additional pathways that will link the Main Gate, the Festival Village and
the new forest stages;
• trees planted for shade;
• additional shade structures;
• the donor forest.

We would like to thank all of the donors who
have made a gift in support of the Staging the
Future Capital Campaign. In the past year,
we have made significant progress in both
the public and private campaigns. Of our $6
million goal, we have just under $1 million left
to raise.
Support for the campaign has come from so many sources - from foundations,
government funders, corporations, Festival fans and musicians. We were
delighted to host Jim Cuddy for a special campaign event in May where he
announced his own gift of $15,000 to our campaign.
During the 2012 Festival, we were thrilled to announce the commitment of
$650,000 from the Province of Manitoba and a new gift of $100,000 from
the Winnipeg Foundation towards the project. Our Festival attendees also
participated in the campaign at the Festival by making their own gifts at our
Staging the Future tent. We also used this opportunity to share information
about our site redevelopment plans and provide tours.

Near the end of the year, we announced
exciting news about the opening of our
donor forest at the upcoming 2013
Winnipeg Folk Festival. Our donor
forest is uniquely designed for donor
recognition (and shade). Thank you to the hundreds of supporters who
responded to our direct mail appeal at the end of 2012, inviting participation
in the donor forest.
While the campaign is getting closer to completion, we still have about 20
per cent left to raise. The campaign team and the board of the Festival is
committed to reaching our fundraising goal and we are looking forward to
seeing the benefits that this project will bring to our community.

ARTISTIC - FESTIVAL
2012 Festival ARTISTS
Under the warm prairie sun the great programming of our 2012 Festival drew one of our largest audiences ever. With
52,197 paid attendees and a cumulative total attendance of 80,232 the Festival was near capacity. This year our
audience enjoyed 75 outstanding musical acts on nine daytime stages and two evening stages in 38 workshops and 87
concerts. Artists came from far and wide including Hungary, Sudan, Wales, Australia, Mali and a great number from the
United States, Canada and, of course, from here at home in Manitoba. Musical highlights included Juno Award-winning
songwriter Feist who kicked off Wednesday night, hip-hop/world musician K’naan playing Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”
on Thursday night, husband-and-wife duo Tedeschi Trucks Band belting out the blues on Friday and a tribute to Woody
Guthrie on his 100th birthday to close the Festival on Sunday night. We also presented one very special workshop called
“Take A Load Off Me,” honouring the passing of past Festival performer and drummer from The Band, Levon Helm.

Hand-Made Village The Hand-Made Village has been an integral part of the Festival since our early days.
Fifty-one artists from across Canada were selected to sell their wares at the 2012 Festival. Artists are selected based on
their craftsmanship with a focus on those who create their products using recycled or repurposed materials. Nearly half
of the artists were brand new to the Festival offering everything from hand-made hammocks to custom-built instruments
by two new luthiers.
Prairie Outdoor Exhibition
The Festival site comes alive
each year with a unique outdoor gallery featuring the art of our Prairie
Outdoor Exhibition. For the first time, we introduced interactive classes where
audience members could make art with their Festival friends. Thanks to all of
the artists who brought their talents to this year’s Festival.

Concert Series
Each year the Winnipeg Folk Festival produces a very successful year round concert series that brings back Festival alumni and
new local, national and international artists to multiple venues around Winnipeg. This year we presented 26 concerts, seven of which sold out and had a total
audience of over 12,000. Our concert series keeps us in touch and engaged with our Festival patrons, volunteers and music lovers all year long. Through our
concerts we support many music venues in the city and contribute to the diversity and financial sustainability of Winnipeg’s music community.

The Folk Exchange
The Folk Exchange is the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s intimate,
gallery-style venue, located in the heart of the Exchange District. The Live @ The Folk Exchange
series highlights emerging and established performers in an intimate acoustic setting. The venue
saw another year of successful concerts and events in 2012, with 17 concerts, six of which
sold out, and Open Mic nights co-presented with Manitoba Music. Over 900 people attended
Folk Exchange programming this year.

Winnipeg Folk Festival Music Store The Winnipeg Folk Festival Music
Store continues to be a destination for independent and hard-to-find music of all kinds. To adapt
to the changing industry the store has also begun to carry a wider array of musical instruments,
and sells more tickets for events throughout the city including Winnipeg Folk Festival events, and
all concerts presented by the West End Cultural Centre. The music store has also increased the
number of in-store performances over last year, playing host to ten events including a jam-packed
Record Store Day with over 75 people, featuring a performance by Frank Turner. Other in-store
performances included special appearances by Kim Churchill, Mise en Scene and Ron Sexsmith.
The music store continues to serve as a fixture in Winnipeg’s music scene and has one of the
city’s largest selections of local and independent CDs and LPs.

Concerts in the Exchange In partnership
with the Exchange District Biz, the Festival once again
presented lunch hour concerts in Old Market Square every
Tuesday in August. The outdoor concerts showcased some
of the finest performers across Canada. Featuring a different
band each week, the free concerts are a great way to reach
out to a new audience and give back to our community.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH
Our Education and Outreach programs aim to create experiences of learning and discovery for our community as a whole. Our education
programs help to train the next generation of performers, and our outreach programs bring the magic of people and music to those who may
otherwise be unable to experience it.
Young Artists Program The Young Artists Program offers a unique opportunity for young
artists to collaborate with artist mentors on a large-scale installation on the Festival site. In 2012,
our artists gleaned inspiration from the natural setting of Birds Hill Provincial Park where they
explored the texture, scale, space and shapes of the flora and fauna of the park. A special
thanks to Jill Peters, Denise Miller, and Megan Krause for guiding and inspiring our young artists.
Young Performers Program Now in its thirteenth year, the Young Performers Program
has continued to grow in popularity with three times more applicants than the program can
accommodate. The Young Performers Program gives young musicians, ages 14 to 24, the
opportunity to work on their craft with renowned Festival artists and perform on stage at the
Festival. In 2012, 40 participants were lucky enough to work with mentors Kendall Carson
(Belle Starr), Dustin Bentall, JD Edwards (Dry Bones), Justin Rutledge, Royal Wood and Natalia
Zuckerman. Thanks to a sponsorship with Galaxie, all program costs for Canadian participants
have been covered by bursary support. Many past Young Performers Program participants also
had the opportunity to take part in a spring showcase held in The Folk Exchange, supported by
the Ron Oswald Fund for Young Performers.

Folk Retreat For four wonderful days in July just before the Festival,
musicians of all skill levels from our community have the amazing
opportunity to work with four Festival performers to hone their musical
skills. In 2012, we were lucky to have Abigail Washburn, Kai Welch,
Martyn Joseph and Willy Porter share their time and talents with
our participants.

Guest For a Day Now in it’s fifth year, the Guest for a Day
program is a great way for us to share the Festival experience with
the wider community. This program offers social service community
groups the opportunity to give their members a guided day at the
Festival free of charge. Over 700 community members participated
in the program in 2012.

Free Concerts at the Millennium Library Over 1,500 people attended our Folk For Families and
In The City series this year – our biggest year yet. We also collaborated with the Winnipeg Public Library
on the Folk For Families Travlin’ Tour that took our free children’s concerts to other libraries throughout
the city over the school system’s winter break. This was highly successful and we intend to build upon this
program in the coming year.
Folk School 144 people attended our year-round Folk School this year. With everything from our
very popular ukulele classes with Kate Ferris, to harmonica with Gerald Laroche, songwriting with Greg
MacPherson and Sound 101, these classes help keep folk music alive in our community throughout the year.

Recycling
Despite having fewer people at the Festival this year, our total recycling
increased from 17,354 kg in 2011 to 17,416 kg in 2012. Recycling per
person increased by 10 per cent from 0.20 kg/person in 2011 to 0.22 kg/
person in 2012.
Our food vendors were encouraged to donate their used vegetable oil to Frank
Motors where they use the oil to fuel four converted diesel vehicles and as a
supplemental heating oil for their building.
Cycling
Our Bike Ride to Site initiative increased by 50 per cent with 300 riders
in 2012. Due to popular demand we also added an intermediate ride (to
add to the existing beginner and advanced rides). This program continues
to grow in popularity and provides a fun, environmentally friendly, and safe
alternative to driving a car out to the Festival site. To support the avid cyclists
in our audience, we also added more bike racks at the Main Gate and in the
Festival Campground.
Solar Power
After a successful first year in 2011 of powering the MTS cell phone charging
station with solar power, we increased our solar power usage in 2012 to
power our Music Store Stage as well.

Composting
We expanded our front-of-house post-consumer waste composting
opportunities and improved our composting education and signage. As a
result we composted 12,760 kg of material in 2012.
Fair Trade
In 2012, Fair Trade Manitoba certified the Winnipeg Folk Festival as a Fair
Trade Certified Event. Our office staff also participated in the One Month
Fair Trade Challenge and joined the Social Purchasing Portal as part of our
commitment to supporting local economic development.
Festival Express & Campground Shuttle
The Festival Express is the extremely popular free transit service that the Festival
provides between Winnipeg and the Festival. In 2012, we discontinued our
park-and-ride service due to cost, however ridership from downtown increased
from 3,955 in 2011 to 5,092 in 2012.
Our internal campground shuttle helped to reduce traffic within the park
by providing transit service to 3,812 people between the park’s three
campgrounds and the Festival site.

Each year the Winnipeg Folk Festival comes to life thanks
to the tireless hard work, commitment and spirit of our
volunteer community. We are truly grateful for the immense
passion of our volunteers and the thousands of hours they
contribute to making the Winnipeg Folk Festival the truly
amazing Festival it is. Seventy-six people have been

In 2012, over 2,800 volunteers worked on 71 crews, doing
everything from driving artists to chopping vegetables. We
were pleased to welcome three new crews, The Red Tent
and The Fort, which offered safe and welcoming spaces in
the Festival Campground, and the ASL crew, who provided
American Sign Language interpretation in the Chickadee
Big Top.
We focused on the recruitment, orientation and evaluation
of our volunteers in 2012. We offered our first-ever
Volunteer Job Fair where new applicants could meet crew
coordinators who were looking for volunteers. It was
extremely successful and nearly all of the applicants who
attended were placed on crews. We also gave first-time
volunteers a great introduction to their volunteer experience
with the Festival by hosting a First-Timers Orientation
session that 317 new volunteers attended. We increased
our efforts to gain and track feedback from volunteers so
that we can best recognize the great contributions they
make and ensure that any issues are brought to light.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT
The Winnipeg Folk Festival is a non-profit organization driven by its mission to create experiences of discovery and learning through
the celebration of people and music. Our supporters are key to the delivery of our mission through the summer Festival and our year
round programming.
Individual Annual Giving
Sponsorship
In a year that focused heavily on the Capital Campaign, it was
expected that there may be some affect on annual giving. For this
reason, it is not surprising that donations to the annual campaign
declined in the 2012 year.While there was a decline in annual giving
overall, gifts directed specifically towards Education and Outreach
more than tripled. It is encouraging to see an increase in donor
support for these meaningful programs.
Our corporate partnerships provide important revenue and in-kind
support for the Festival and we provide them with carefully designed
marketing opportunities. At the 2012 Festival, site activations
included a solar-powered stage sponsored by Solar Solutions, a
charging station sponsored by MTS, a Volkswagen car display, a
Manitoba Canola Growers photo booth and a CBC listening lounge.
Sponsored program support also included Galaxie’s support of the
Young Performers Program, Manitoba Union’s sponsorship of the
Family Area and Manitoba Public Insurance’s sponsorship of the
shuttle bus service.
Many of our sponsors return year after year and we are so grateful for

A gift to the Winnipeg Folk Festival nurtures creative expression for our youngest folk
Endowment
Our endowment fund held at the Winnipeg Foundation saw modest
growth in the 2012 season with our donor focus being primarily
directed to the capital campaign. With individual gifts and matching
support from Canadian Heritage funding at year-end the Winnipeg
Folk Festival’s Endowment Fund contained $821,911.00.
The annual fundraiser took place on November 8, 2012, branded
with a new theme: Folk Festival in the City. The gala event took the
spirit of the summer festival to the historic Fort Garry Hotel. Filled with
Festival music and ambiance and hosted by Ace Burpee, the event
raised $49,000 for the Festival’s education and outreach programs.
With a sold-out dinner and a new format of late night music, the
fundraiser was well received by 376 Festival friends.

Grants
Operating support from each level of government remained
unchanged in 2012. Thanks to Canadian Heritage for their support
through the Canadian Arts Presentation Canada Fund, the Province of
Manitoba through the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport, the
Manitoba Arts Council and the Winnipeg Arts Council.
In addition, both the Province, through the Department of
Conservation, as well as the Federal Government, through its Cutural
Spaces program, have made special funding available to support the
Festival’s capital campaign.
Winnipeg Folk Festival 2012-2013 Annual Report
Folk Festival in the City featured performances by Red Moon Road,
The Crooked Brothers, Imaginary Cities, Greg MacPherson and
Artistic Achievement Award recipient, Sarah Harmer. While in
Winnipeg, Sarah visited R.B. Russell Vocational High School to see
the Festival’s Musical Mentors program in action. Special thanks to the
many folks who made this event a success: the volunteer committee,
auction donors, all the performers, host Ace Burpee, sponsors and
event guests.
Planned Giving and In Memoriam Gifts
The Winnipeg Folk Festival was honoured to be remembered by longtime volunteer John Madden through a gift left to the Festival by his
estate. John volunteered for many years in the Festival Music Store
and wanted to make sure he could still help the Festival even after his
passing. Other friends who passed during the year also remembered
the Festival with in memoriam gifts. We thank the family and friends
of Richelle Desrosiers, Ragnar Dworschak and Marni Kalef for
their generosity.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
The management of The Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc. is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the financial statements and accompanying
notes. The financial statements have been prepared in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in Canada and reviewed and approved by the
Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
The statements have been examined by Magnus Chartered Accountants, independent external auditors, whose opinion is included herein. The preparation of
the financial information contained in the annual report necessarily involved the use of certain estimates and judgments that have been reached based on careful
assessment of data available through the organization’s information systems.
Preparation of financial information is an integral part of management’s broader responsibilities for the ongoing operations of the organization. Management
maintains an appropriate system of internal accounting controls to ensure that transactions are accurately recorded on a timely basis, are properly approved
and result in reliable financial statements.
The Audit Committee of the Board of Directors meets periodically with the financial officers of the organization and the auditors. A portion of each meeting with
the auditors takes place in the absence of the Treasurer and staff of the organization. The auditors have free access to this committee to discuss the results of their
audit work and their opinion on the adequacy of internal financial controls and the quality of financial reporting.
