TRAVEL GRANTS FROM THE COMPREHENSIVE BIOMEDICAL PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE Funds will be provided to help a limited number of minority scientists to attend the AACR and ASCO Annual Meetings. The NCI is funding this program in order to encourage participation in the annual meetings by predoctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and physicians in training from minority groups which have traditionally been underrepresented in cancer research. Eligible scientists are those who are either engaged in cancer research or who have training that could lead to contributions in this field. By action of the AACR Board of Directors, only citizens of the U.S. and Canada or scientists who are permanent residents in those countries may receive one of these awards. Awardees will be selected by an advisory committee consisting of members of AACR and ASCO based on a completed application and letters of reference. The maximum award available will be $350 plus economy air or land transportation to and from the meeting. Applicants will be chosen from both minority institutions and the larger bodies of universities and research institutions. Although pref erence will be shown to those who are authors of abstracts accepted for presentation at the annual meetings, this is not a requirement. Appli cations will be accepted until March 1, 1989. Awardees are expected to attend at least three full days of scientific sessions. They are also expected to submit a brief report after the meeting commenting on the sessions they attended. Contain ing the twenty-two articles published as "Perspectives in Cancer Re search" in the last two volumes of the journal Cancer Research, the compilation presents the insights and interpretations of recognized authorities in the study of cancer. Each article explores contemporary and sometimes controversial areas of investigation, analyzing recent progress in cancer research and offering ideas on where such research should be heading. This collection of incisive and stimulating view points will serve as a valuable resource and teaching tool for the cancer research community.
