and for easy maintenance.
When you buy a PC
chassis with a backplane,
you need a PICMG, PISA,
or ISA CPU card (see pp.
92~101).
We can often upgrade
you to a backplane that
matches your expansion
slot requirements, though
not all similar backplanes
fit in the same size
chassis.
Footnotes:
Any unused CPU slot may be used
as an ISA-bus expansion slot.
Several backplanes incorporate
PCI-to-PCI bridge chip(s) to overcome
the PCI 4-slot limit. Use a CPU card
that supports PCI bridging to ensure
compatibility (call for details).
Segmented backplanes accept a
fixed number of independent CPU
cards, with a fixed number of slots for
each CPU.
These segmented (10, 14, & 20slot) models are built for 2 CPUs.
Slots are set up as 6-4, 6-8, or 10-10,
respectively (e.g., in the 10-10, there
are 10 slots for each PC).
Has 1 PICMG CPU/ISA slot and
1 PICMG /ISA /PCI slot. See photo of
PBPW 14P12A on facing page.
13-slot segmented PCI/ISA is built
for 2 CPUs. Slots are set up as
4PCI/2CPU/2ISA + 3PCI/2CPU/2ISA.
16-slot segmented PCI/ISA is built
for 4 CPUs (four 4-slot PCs). It is set
up as 4 independent systems, each of
which can provide 3PCI + 1CPU or
2 PCI + 1CPU + 1 ISA. See photo of
PBPN 16D on the facing page, and
notes & above.
18-slot segmented PCI/ISA is built
for 2 CPUs (two 9-slot PCs). Set up as
2 x 4 PCI/2 CPU/ 3 ISA slots.
Has two adjacent PISA slots; left
slot can be used for a PISA CPU card
or as an ISA slot; right slot (PISA /PCI)
can be used as an ISA slot, a PISA
CPU slot, or as a PCI slot. See PBZQ

What is PICMG 1.3?
PICMG 1.3 adds support for high-speed PCI Express (PCIe)
slots in place of older ISA slots (see PCIe Tech Note on pg. 15).
Now you can use PCIe cards in passive backplane systems and
your industrial PC systems can include the latest high-speed
video and data acquisition cards alongside standard PCI cards!
The PICMG 1.3 bus carries all the signals for up to 16
traditional PCI cards and five or more PCIe cards — far beyond
what motherboard-based systems can provide. Design powerful
systems with up to 19 expansion card slots.
PICMG 1.3 handles more power. Traditional PICMG 1.0 fulllength cards could safely pull up to 227W from the backplane.
PICMG 1.3 cards can draw up to 500W without damage. This not
only makes them more robust, but also provides support for
modern dual- and quad-core processors with high-speed CPUs.
