Beware of shadow! 5 Protect the heart of the photovoltaic system Our system solutions for the protection of the inverter Buildings without external lightning protection Surge protection for the current inverter – the heart of the system – is particularly important on buildings without external lightning protection. A protection system should cover all at-risk lines that are connected to the current inverter. The DC surge arrester (protection circuits up to 1,000 V DC available) must be matched to the maximum no-load voltage of the solar module. The maximum no-load voltage is typically up to 20% above the indicated noload voltage (UOC STC ). External lightning protection is not necessary or required. A type 2 surge protection is sufficient. The high lightning current cre- ates a strong magnetic field, which induces overvoltage in the electrical components. Lightning and surge protection for the current inverter – the heart of the system – is particu- larly important in this application. A protection system should cover all at-risk lines that are connected to the current inverter. The distance between the lightning protection and the photovoltaic system (normally 0.5 m–1 m) cannot be maintained (e.g. metal roof). Combi arrester for main power supply Through the combined lightning current and surge arrester (class 1+2) a lightning current equipotential bonding according to EN 62305 as well as surge protection according to IEC 60364-5-53 can be conducted. Lightning current arresters must be integrated into the equipotential bonding in a way which makes them capable of withstanding lightning current (min. 16 mm2 copper). 8 Suitable solutions Modular and installation-ready solutions for DC and AC systems: Lightning and surge protection safeguards property and increases availability. Protected photovoltaic generator If the photovoltaic module lies within the protection range of the lightning interceptor, and if the distance to the lightning protection system is maintained, then instead of the combination arrester, a type 2 surge protection device may also be used. Photovoltaic generator laminated on a metal roof If the distance between the photovoltaic plant and the lightning protection system cannot be maintained (e.g. with a metal roof), the systems should be connected with at least 16 mm2 (copper). At the building entry (LPZ 0-1) possible partial lightning currents should be dealt with by the appropriate combi arrester (type 1 or types 1+2). It is also here that the emphasis falls on the protection of the cables and pipes against damage, as well as the protection of the entire facility against moisture damage.
