The photovoltaic system also requires safety measures: Effective
protection against lightning strikes
and electrical surges is extremely
necessary in order that the facil-
ity doesn’t experience any nasty
surprises even before the amortisation period has ended. Added
to that, regional building regulations as well as property insurers
under the VdS directive for certain
buildings and plants require that
lightning and electrical surge protection is in place.

Buildings without external lightning protection
Surge protection for the current inverter – the heart of the system – is
particularly important on buildings
without external lightning protection.
A protection system should cover
all at-risk lines that are connected to
the current inverter. The DC surge
arrester (protection circuits up to
1,000 V DC available) must be
matched to the maximum no-load
voltage of the solar module. The
maximum no-load voltage is typically
up to 20% above the indicated noload voltage (UOC STC ).
External lightning protection is not necessary or required. A type 2 surge protection is sufficient.

Buildings with external lightning protection
In buildings with external lightning
protection, a direct lightning strike
into the PV module must be prevented by the lightning protection system. The high lightning current cre-
ates a strong magnetic field, which
induces overvoltage in the electrical
components. Lightning and surge
protection for the current inverter –
the heart of the system – is particu-
larly important in this application. A
protection system should cover all
at-risk lines that are connected to the
current inverter.
The distance between the lightning protection and the photovoltaic system (normally 0.5 m–1 m) cannot be maintained
(e.g. metal roof).

The outward signs of a photovoltaic system are the solar modules. With its comprehensive range, OBO

protection products, we offer everything that you need for a clean installation.
Combi arrester for main power
supply
Through the combined lightning current and surge arrester (class 1+2) a
lightning current equipotential bonding according to EN 62305 as well
as surge protection according to IEC
60364-5-53 can be conducted.
Lightning current arresters must
be integrated into the equipotential bonding in a way which makes
them capable of withstanding
lightning current (min.
16 mm2 copper).

Protected photovoltaic
generator
If the photovoltaic module lies within
the protection range of the lightning
interceptor, and if the distance to the
lightning protection system is maintained, then instead of the combination arrester, a type 2 surge protection device may also be used.
Photovoltaic generator laminated on a metal roof
If the distance between the photovoltaic plant and the lightning protection system cannot be maintained
(e.g. with a metal roof), the systems
should be connected with at least
16 mm2 (copper).
At the building entry (LPZ 0-1) possible partial lightning currents should
be dealt with by the appropriate combi arrester (type 1 or types 1+2). OBO
offers suitable combination lightning
arrestors for DC applications.

Fire protection solutions for photovoltaic systems
There is a high level of requirement attached to the fire safety of installations in modern buildings. OBO offers

Installation solutions

Alongside the aspect of protection against lightning and electricity surges, the installation engineer finds themself faced with the task of installing the pipeline facility in accordance with architectural and static conditions.
It is also here that the emphasis falls on the protection of the cables and pipes against damage, as well as the
protection of the entire facility against moisture damage. OBO Bettermann is at your side with its fastening and
fitting systems which have been established in the market for years.
Diversity is the key
Because of the number of different installation conditions,
there are also constantly new
demands made on the installation material.
For use in direct sunlight, the
UV-resistant systems serve extremely well, such as the StarQuick clips in conjunction with
steel armoured pipes or ribbon
clips for wind-proof montage
of lines, e.g. on cable support
systems.
Fastening elements from hotdip galvanised steel, stainless
steel or aluminium are also
available in a great variety of
sizes.

The installation of modern photovoltaic systems constantly presents the
installation engineer with the task of laying the lines safely while conforming to standards. The insertion of the energy lines in connection units
such as the inverter or the counter unit is also a subject for discussion.

The sealing of entries for inverter
and distribution systems, which are
exposed to the effects of weather,
can be secured with the OBO cable
glands of the V-TEC VM series (Protection class IP 68). The black-coloured types are recommended for
outdoor use as these ensure less
UV radiation penetration.
If you have too few entries in the inverter, or the screw connection is
too large, these problems can be
overcome by using the multi-way
seal insert or the reducing seal insert. The multi-way seal inserts are
especially useful with the smalldiameter photovoltaic lines.
