AIDS screen in g a t a few high schools

m eetin g on AIDS in London and g av e

by health m in isters from 114 co u n tries
and sen io r public h ealth officials from
34 o th ers, adopted a d e c la ra tio n b a c k ­
ing th e World H ealth O rg an izatio n ’s

W hen th e sto ry of M ark S tev en son’s la te st
tro u b les broke e a rly th is w eek, one co m m en t about
his a r r e s t for u n d e ra g e d rin k in g w as, “ how m any
o th e r stu d e n ts w e re cited for th e s a m e offense th a t
w e e k e n d .”
T he point is w ell-taken. L ike it or not, u n d e ra g e
d rin k in g is as m uch a p a r t of college life as, w ell,
college b a sk e tb a ll. It h ap p en s. Look a t the n u m b er
of m in o rs cited a t L e e ’s R ibs la s t y e a r. T h ere is,
how ever, a d ifferen ce betw een S tev en so n ’s ca se
an d th e L e e ’s c a se , asid e fro m th e fa c t th a t S teven­
son h a d been a rre s te d once b efore th is season.
T hose stu d e n ts a r e n ’t in th e lim elig h t th a t a b a s ­
k e tb a ll p la y e r a t a m a jo r u n iv e rsity is.

illu stra te s the point th a t a th le te s, th e idols of
ch ild ren , have to live up to th a t. A gain, th a t’s a
tough m an tle to th ru s t upon a 19-20 year-old college
stu d e n t, b u t co nsider this:

ask in g R iv ers to sign th e ir g a m e p ro g ra m s w hich
b ore a p ic tu re of him on the cover.
While R iv ers signed th e younger bo y ’s p ro g ra m ,
the boy looked up w ith an aw ed look on his face. It
w a sn ’t th e first tim e in alm o st tw o y e a rs of covering
th e Irish th a t the re p o rte r had w itnessed a s im ila r
scene. He knew it w ouldn’t be the last.
On a less lofty note in college b a sk etb a ll, the
g ra d e s a r e in on w hich school h a d the b est e a rly
re c ru itin g period. T he Irish , who got co m m itm e n ts
fro m 6-9 L aP honso E llis, 6-11 Jo h n Tow er and 6-1
E lm e r B ennett, h av e com e out v e ry well. M any of
